Name: The Big Bang Theory
Date/Time: Friday 20th September at 8:00pm-8:30pm
Genre: Comedy
Purpose of the text: The purpose of the text is to entertain the audience mainly. However this isn't your stereotypical sitcom and is also about scientists so this text also teaches it's audience a lot as well.
Institution producing the text: Chuck Lorre Productions
Target Audience: The target audience is mainly for a younger audience perhaps marketed towards the 18-30 demographic.
Before I started watching The Big Bang Theory, my first thoughts were that I wouldn't enjoy it at all as I'm not a big fan of science or anything of the scientific sort in general and from just seeing the title of the program I automatically assumed that this text would not be something I would consider watching. However, after a family constantly trying to get me to watch this program after telling me countlessly many times, I finally decided to watch it to see what all the fuss was all about and I was extremely glad that I did. Thankfully, The Big Bang Theory breaks out of all those stereotypical conventions of the nerdy, geek boys who sit inside all day doing nothing but working on their science experiments but take these stereotypical characters and add and exaggerate those characteristics in order to make this one of the funniest sitcoms that I have ever watched.
My reaction to this text: When I first saw that The Werewolf Transformation episode was on television my initial reaction was to just laugh before the episode had even come on because seeing this episode numerous times it become one of my favourite episodes ever and even though I've seen it a million times before it doesn't make the episode any less funnier. In fact, it makes it even better. The storyline to this plot is so ridiculous and stupid you can't help but just laugh. When of the main characters Sheldon Cooper, who is without a doubt my favourite character on the show, forgets to get a haircut,in his world all hell has broken lose. Most people who haven't watched the show before wouldn't even think this was the slightest bit funny but if you know Sheldon Cooper: somebody who had a strict adherence to routine, a total lack of social skills, a tenuous understanding of irony, sarcasm, humour and a general lack of humility or empathy, then you know that this episode isn't just something you can sit back and watch without a smile on your face. Within the first five minutes of even watching this program, I was crippled over with laughter despite having watched this so many times before.#
I also think my favourite thing about this particular episode is that I can now even talk along with characters; having watched it so many times, the words have some how imprinted into my head so that I can recite the whole things and I can even say the words before the characters in the program have even said them.
Why would people consume the text?: Unlike myself, who began to watch this show through persuasion from a family member, I think many other people would watch this show mainly because of the fun, loving and extremely hilarious characters, Sheldon Cooper being the one. The characters in The Big Bang Theory seem to be a lot more tangible than characters in most others shows and people can relate to these characters a lot more throughout society. For example you have the geeks, the beautiful girl, the socially awkward characters and even characters from different ethnics. So I think people will mainly consume this text for the characters but also possibly if you already have an interest in science.
Could some people react in different ways to the text? How?: The Big Bang Theory has been critised before and some of the audience has reacted negatively to this text as they feel that the characters are reflecting a false view of these characters. For example, the 'nerds' in this show have been critised as some people aren't happy because of the fact that these nerds are portrayed as being popular when in real life it was the poplars who made their lives hell.
