Classifying Audiences | Homework 2

1a. The mainstream, which is the largest group in society, are set on feeling 'secure' in life. Rather than finding their own likes and interests, they prefer to follow the crowd by going with bug well known brands and popular media texts. Because of this, I think film franchises such as Disney would appeal to mainstreamers, because of its reputation and reliability to produce a good film. It will provide a sense of security as they know Disney will always make good content.

The suceeders in society are usually confident and have high hopes and ambitions. Their core need in life in for control and tend to go for quality rather than quantity. I think products like the Apple Watch would be aimed at the succeeders due to their need of control, organisation and expensive good quality brands.

For the explorers, I think music/artists such as The 1975 would've appealed to them due to their lack of popularity and good music. Their core need in life is discovery, therefore lesser known artists like The 1975 would appeal to them because they're very rarely played on the radio unlike Justin Bieber, Rihanna etc.

The aspires are materialistic, driven ny others opinions on them, and they're core need in life their status. Due to caring about their looks and reputation, hugh fashion names such as Chanel and Gucci would appeal to them. Media texts like Vogue would therefore appeal to an aspirer, however maybe to make themselves look better than they are as if they can afford the high end products which Vogue promotes.

1b. Some of the categories are fairly accurate, for example the mainstreamers because I think the majority of people will find themselves following what society sees as normal, however a bad thing about the model is that I think many people will see part of themselves in each category, and  some of them could overlap especially the succeeder and the aspirer.

1c. A programme that is currently on TV is 'The Great British Bakeoff.' I think the show could mainly be aimed at older people as they do not go to work therefore have time in the day to bake. It could also be aimed at unemployed people , as they do not work and have time to bake. The plot of the show is basic and easy to follow, so education isn't really important when watching it, which is another reason why it could possible be aimed towards the unemployed or lower to middle class people.

1d. I think Disney films would appeal to a traditionalist as they want thing to stay the same so they could rely on Disney to never make bad content.

I think the Apple Watch would appeal to trendies as they want their peers to admire them, so having the best technology will probably make them feel superior and admireable.

I think underrated artists such as The 1975 would possibly appeal to 'Innovaters' as they want to leave  their mark on the world, therefore being unique and different to others will make them stand out from the rest of society, making them more memorable.

I think Vogue would probably appeal to 'trendies' or 'groupies' as they're driven by other people's opinions, and want to be looked up to and accepted.

I think 'The Great British Bakeoff' would appeal to 'drop-outs' because each episode is only one hour long and it consists of a basic plot so it is easy to follow.
