Pretty Little liars is an American teen drama, mystery and thriller television series which is based off a series of books from Sara Shepard.
Starring:
Ashley Benson as Hanna Marin
Troian Bellisario as Spencer Hastings
Lucy Hale as Aria Montgomery
Shay Mitchell as Emily Fields
Sasha Pieterse as Alison Dilaurentis
The show consists of five girls who are facing challenges from their blackmailer 'A'. The girls receive anonymous texts threatening them to expose their secrets.
Who is 'A'?
The biggest question of the show. The one everyone wants to know. The gripping and thrilling excitement of the show makes the audience like ourselves to carry on supporting and loving what the writers, producers, directors and of course the cast are creating.
In PLL (pretty little liars) a range of camera angles are used to create suspense for example, when something dramatic has happened the camera often points and zooms into a characters face or into a significant object. Also, the lighting always changes in shows like this, as there are so many shocks.
In the show the lighting changes quite a lot for example, in flash backs I think the lighting helps the audience feel a little nostalgic as the picture, shapes and lines on the screen go softer while the lighting goes brighter which sort of indicates that it is a memory.
However, when the liars find themselves in a uncomfortable or worrying position the lights always tend to go darker. We see that when the girls go to a place called Ravenswood which is known to be a creepy town the lighting will change to eerie, supernatural and odd. This creates effect as it makes us feel similar to what the are feeling.
The songs used in the episodes constantly have a meaning to the current storyline for example, when people die in the show they always find a significant song to use, such as: 'Suggestions' by Orelia.
This song has a huge meaning in the episode as the words relate to what is going on. The line "It just takes a second for my world to come crumbling down", which has a huge meaning in what the characters might be feeling. Apart from this, the theme song to the show is called "Secret" which is basically what the whole show is based around, telling lies and sharing secrets. When it says 'Cause two can keep a secret, if one of them is dead' shows us as an audience that a person can only keep a secret if one of them is dead, which the show betrays really well.
The show has many themes for example, I would say the main theme of the show is secrecy as these five girls have many secrets and most of them are pretty serious. I would say this is the theme that the show itself betrays the most. In addition to this, I think that another theme is love as we see all the characters experience love of some sort from relationships with family, friends and partners. We also see the theme of trust which shows us that the girls are a tight group as they do keep each others secrets which sometimes is not the best idea.
Through the show pll have worked with artists like Adam Lambert who has an egy look and voice which corresponds to the episode he was featured on, it was Halloween and the lighting and setting was eerie which in my opinion worked really well. Marlene King the writer of pll has recently been involved in a new show called Famous In Love starring Bella throne which premieres in April 2017. It is said to be romantic show hence the name Famous in love.
If you love PLL I think you would be a big fan of Once Upon A Time this is a show about fairy tale characters trapped in the modern day. It does not have any similar story lines to PLL as they are based on different things but there are many themes in the two shows that link them together. For example, in PLL the girls are trapped in a way by not having much freedom as they are getting watched by there every move and in Once Upon A Time they are literally trapped. In PLL there are many twists and plots that unfold which is very similar to Once Upon A Time.
Overall, PLL is one of my favourite shows and I think if you are over 12 and love thriller and mystery shows you should watch it.
