The 1975- self titled album

The 1975 is the self titled album by Manchester originated indie rock band The 1975. It was released on 2^nd September 2013. Singer/ guitar Matty Healy, guitarist Adam Hann, bassist Ross McDonald and drummer George Daniel all met in high school where they started playing music for fun, until singer matty started writing his own songs to where they became a proper band and went under many names like ‘drive like I do’ and ‘the big sleep’, until they became the 1975, “ I’ve got it tattooed on me now so we are going to have to stick with it,” and released their first album which hit number one on the UK album charts in its first week, after realising 4 EP’s during the recording of the album. The genre bending 16 track record conveys the coming of age dramas of a typical 18 year old, “the album is basically me,” matty. Sex, drugs, and love appear in most of the albums singles, ‘sex’ one of the most popular and well know songs, the whole songs idea being, I like this girl but she’s got a boyfriend, its juvenile lyrics and catchy guitar riffs are what makes it one of their most anticipated songs at the the 1975’s gigs. ‘Chocolate’ was the boys first single, which was released just before the album, the song about smoking, “Hey now call it a split 'cause you know that you will” and being aware of the ‘feds,’ “Now we run run away from the boys in the blue.” Chocolate being the replacement word for weed, “ you never gonna quit it, no your never gonna quit it, if you don’t start smoking it, that’s what she said.” However apart from their ‘jack the lad’ boisterous, fast songs, the album also invests in some slow, heartfelt romantic ballads, for example Robbers one of the most emotionally invested songs of the fans, his is a love song about a toxic relationship. They are too focused on each other to notice the destruction they cause each other. The title “Robbers” refers to how the lovers are robbing each other of happiness and chances in this world apart from one another. They can’t move on and grow in love because they are so caught up in their toxic relationship. The 1975 frontman, Matty Healy said the following about the song: “ ‘Robbers’ was originally inspired by my love of the Quentin Tarantino film True Romance, the story of an Elvis-obsessed loner who falls in love and marries a prostitute. In the movie the couple run away to California after killing her pimp and stealing his drugs to start a new life financed by a once in a lifetime drug deal. It’s the sentiment behind the film that appeals to me, the hopelessly romantic notion that two people can meet and instantly fall in love, an escape story where love is the highest law and conquers all against the odds.” The album explores simple topics, but their detailed lyrics give us the idea of matty’s experiences, for example ‘So far its alright,’ reflects upon the perks and turmoil’s of life. Although things may go wrong, we’re alright in the end. This song is an expression of living life to the fullest instead of wasting it away over troubles we may face, “Yeah it's the way we are, we were smoking by 11 and knocking round town.” Overall the album appeals to teens of every background, mostly who like to think they can relate to the songs and culture the band, “these kids, there living their lives sound tracked to the 1975.” The album is an indie fuelled record that explores all genres of music, the album is mostly labelled as rock because of the band, but the wide variety of genres in the album has led to it being described as electropop, emo, funk rock, indie pop , indie rock, pop, pop punk, pop rock, and rock. The different songs and their meanings, bring out the different genres making the album so exciting and loved.
