Batman Arkham City
DC Comics have been making a lot of controversial moves lately. First they re-boot their entire DC Universe, which I find somewhat offensive as it was fine the way it was, but yet some hearts can be won back with the video game Arkham City; a sequel to the excellent video game Arkham Asylum. DC Universe can now get back to what it's really about, hordes of poverty stricken young people who get their arms and legs broken by an extremely rich business man.
Yet I can't help but think the DC franchise are doing a bit of a domino affect with the sequels, whats next? If DC decided to do Arkham Universe you can't really rely on the suspension of disbelief that The Joker can pay for a whole space programme. The concept of Arkham Asylum (the first game in the sequel) had more of a sandbox set up, but like whipped cream on an angry dog, sandbox mode doesn't necessarily make a game better.
Throughout Arkham City you encounter a number of Batman's villains. Unfortunately during game play and boss fights the villains will usually just pin you up against their entire entourage, because they themselves don't have much going for them apart from a sharp suit and a personality disorder.
I do need to critise Batman himself, he constantly acts like he's just walked into a room and forgot what he's went in there for. It just goes to show that Batman is the least interesting character in everything he's in. What can you do with a character that responds to everything by either punching it or deploying bat-anti-norm spray.. then punching it.
As much as I've slated it, Arkham City isn't going through a review with me without getting a recommendation, it is in fact an amazing game.
