Representation of The Mining Community

Pride represents the mining community in different ways based on gender. The males in the mining community are all workers whereas the women stay at home in the town etc.  These were traditional roles in 1980's Britain. The scene in which Sian goes to get the miners out of prison fortifies this as all of the miners are males and most of the women are either with LGSM or in the town.

The miners find it very hard to understand why LGSM are here to help them because they don't truly understand LGSM as people. This is more the males than females as most of the males hold more traditional views of what a man should be. Therefore the deviation from this can be hard to understand for some. The adverts and tv spots for the threat of HIV & AIDS didn't help with this very much either as it just reinforced their views. The women on the other hand take to LGSM more which follows traditional real life social norms. This made more clear during Jonathan's dance scene as he is dancing with all the women and there isn't another man on the dance floor. Another representation is followed by this as Sian quotes that 'Welsh men don't dance'. This is in relation to men who work in the industry that they do as a whole as they're all classed as real men.

The miners are also represented as deprived and  some of them mentally weak in parts throughout the film. Particularly in the scenes in which LGSM go back to Wales this is more clear as the miners are struggling and having to cope without power and water in some cases. This is a direct result of the miners strike as they're having tope with a lack of money and attention from the government. Characters like Maureen fit into the mentally weak category as she refuses to open her mind and take in LGSM. She therefore maintains her prejudice opinion and is the reason the union vote to stop collaborating with LGSM. The union members who vote this also show an element of naivety as they judge LGSM on what they're and not what they have done.

The Miners themselves are very rarely featured in a scene alone apart from when they're fighting with the police which is another point in itself as most audiences already know that the miners lose the strike so some audiences feel sympathetic towards them. The struggles they had to go through are made more clear with this. The Miners not being in scenes by themselves represents them as not very independent and that they need the women to guide them through life. This challenges social norms at the time as women had some level of independence however they were not doing jobs that were classed as predominantly male like going in the mines.

The Miners themselves are represented as quite formal as all of the men tend to have the working mans uniform to show that they represent the mining community. This is challenged when LGSM turn up and characters like Steph challenge this with her hair that is shaven on one side and punk style outfits.

Representation of the Mining Community in Pride.

Representation of the Mining Community in the film: Pride.

- Mining Community is not focused on as much as the LGBT Community. When their is a focus on the miners, and their struggles, there is little depth of explanation to the scenes, except the ones that feature the miners with their wives.

- The men are portrayed in a variety of different ways. Some miners children, like Maureen's are reluctant to accept the Gay's and portray a stereotypical masculine person, struggling to accept something that they are not, until the very end scene, when one of them finally accepts them and shakes their hand. Sian's husband is similar, he isn't happy with them at first due to the negative connotations of the Gay's, however soon comes round due to his wife, who eventually makes him realise that they are equal. - This gives the representation that the mining community are willing to accept change, and challenges the stereotype that 1980's men were completely against Gay people.

- The men in the mining community very rarely feature on their own, they are always accompanied by either their wives, or members of LGBT. This gives the representation that the mining men aren't independent, and need their wives to take care of them, so to speak, challenging the stereotype that men are the dominant ones who take control of their wives.

- Sian has a huge role, her story is centred around her struggle to make the miners accept the LGBT. She is the one who pushes the hardest out of the mining community, putting 10's of staples into the poster, only for it to be taken down again and again.

- The scene which shows the miners together, and away from their wives and LGSM is the scene where they are protesting against the police. Since some of the audience are already aware they lose the strike, the audience start to feel empathetic to the miners, as they are fighting a lost cause. it emulates the scene at the start when Mark is watching the news, with the miners who are fighting and rioting, the miners are similar to those miners that Mark was watching. The audience then realise that the scene is a daily, weekly occurrence for the miners, they have to do this all the time in order to fight for what they stand for, a sad realisation.

- When the LGBT community actually meet the Miners, the scene is awkward as they struggle to find things to say, and Cliff even struggles to say the words Lesbians and Gay's, which obviously is an act as he reveals he is gay. This works well as Mark says "1 in 5 miners must be happy to see us", and Cliff is the 1 in 5 gay, proving that despite being masculine and a miner, one can still be gay.

- In this scene, the miners are all dressed up in suits, and in formal clothing, where as the gays are in bright clothing, giving the interpretation that the miners are older, and more formal people.

- Gwen, who is in it for comedy purposes, challenges the stereotype of the 'Little Old Lady', usually this old lady is seen to be grumpy, moody, and ends all type of fun at parties, however Gwen challenges this stereotype as she is the opposite, she has fun and even goes to a drag bar, something more commonly associated with younger people!

- Maureen, despite being the villain in the film, actually represents the views common ideology in 1980's Britain, homophobia. People, and Thatcher's Government did not want to implement change for the LGBT Community, shown in Clause 28. This gives the film a more realistic edge, not everyone was willing to accept the gays, someone was needed to to act as a person from that time. If the encoders didn't create Maureen, the story may seem to unbelievable, people may not think its a true story as it wouldn't represent the common views in society, so it was a clever decision to create the character, Maureen.

- The entire community seem to challenge the stereotype of the older community being more Conservative, and more reluctant to accept different types of sexuality. Older people are stereotypically more right-wing, meaning tat their views often are against the gays, however a lot of the older people in the film are more willing to accept the gays, seemingly more than the younger people, like Maureen's children.

Marget Thatcher

The Iron Lady certainly divided the nation. She entered Parliament in 1979, defeating James Callaghan comfortably. Almost immediately after she became Prime Minister, she had to deal with the recession that hit the UK in the early 1980's. The economic policies that she, and her cabinet created as a result of the recession and high inflation, helped damage the trade unions. It saw manufacturing shrink by over 50% while unemployment levels rose to over 3.2m, the highest level of unemployment since World War 2. The trade unions membership completely fell from a peak of 11 million, and this resulted in the 1980's strikers across the UK, in Toxteth, Leeds, Birmingham and Manchester. Her approval rate dropped to 22%, the lowest approval rate of any Prime Minister in the UK in the 20th Century. This fall occurred due to her reaction to the recession, as she increased taxes and limited the money that primary/secondary schoolchildren had, coining the name "Thatcher, the Milk Snatcher". The media hounded Thatcher, and she publicly came out in the Commons, and quoted from poet Ronald Miller, saying "You turn if you want too, the lady's not for turning"!

As she had to deal with the recession, she appointed Lord Norman Tebbit to Employment Secretary, who Alan Davies described as "The second most hated person in the UK, behind Thatcher". Tebbit and Thatcher decided to strip the unions of their legal protection, and banned flying pickets from blockading ports, public bodies and factories. When meeting with others who lost their jobs, he told them to "Get on yer bikes"! which further incited anger amongst the miners.

When Thatcher decided to close uneconomical mines, it was a hugely unpopular decision, with many miners going on strike and trying to get their jobs back. Some mines were uneconomical, however Thatcher only sparked outrage due to her lack of negotiation with miners, and particularly, Arthur Scargill, the leader of the NUM, National Union for Miners. The lack of communication led to Thatcher closing down 20 coal pits, which prompted immediate action by the NUM, and they decided to go militant, and form a years long strike. They were however, unsuccessful, and this was a huge victory for Thatcher. It allowed her to end the "closed shop" in the British coal industry. In 1966, coal was the main source of energy, producing 230 million tonnes. When Thatcher closed the pits, the industry was producing 128m tonnes. And because of her, Major and Heath, the industry was producing 15m tonnes in 2009. In 2015, it is now 0, which isn't too bad, as renewable energy has become something that is wanted by many, however the way Thatcher implemented the changes so quickly, and so brutally, was why she was hated by so many.

Thatcher also had to concentrate on international affairs. The Falklands War is something that defined Thatcher's career. In 1982, the people on the Falklands Island all considered themselves to be British, however Argentina, believing that they should own the Falklands due to how close it is to them, decided to force themselves into the islands illegally. With Argentina currently being led by the military, the people on the Falklands were firmly against becoming part of Argentina, which is why Thatcher decided to step in, with her good friend, Ronald Reagan, President of the United States. In total, 650 Argentinians died, while 255 British soldiers die with only 3 civilians killed. The recapture of the islands were huge for her, and the media started to realise how good of a leader she was.

Domestically, Thatcher seemingly had to deal with strikes, or riots, evey year, most specifically, the Miners Strikes of 1984-85, and "LBGT" strikes. Thatcher struggled to deal with homosexuals, so eventually, she decided to enact the Clause 28, which stated that a local authority "shall not intentionally promote homosexuality or publish material with the intention of promoting homosexuality" or "promote the teaching in any maintained school of the acceptability of homosexuality as a pretended family relationship".

Representations of India in Slumdog Millionaire

India is portrayed in many different ways throughout the film depending on the scene. The different locations such as the slums, the forrest, the Taj Mahal and Bombay transforming into Mumbai. The slums portray the idea and representation of India that most people have in their head. They picture and LEDC with insufficient housing and an overcrowded population. These slums are more than just an over populated area as they're in fact a living breathing community. the slums get described as being alive and constantly moving. The scene in which the Bollywood star fly's into the slums gives an good example of this. The toilet that Jamal is using portrays how the slums are definitely poor in terms of finance and cleanliness however they get on with this as its normal life for them and they don't know anything truly different. The large amount of people that swarm Amitabh Bachan show how many people truly live in the slums as this happens in the space of a minute and its suddenly hard to get near him.

The forrest that Mamon has the children living in shows how easily india can be viewed as quite corrupt and a hard place to be. These type of establishments are all over india because of the amount of poverty. People do desperate things when it comes to wanting to make money, which is why the use of children is always the route that most criminals will of taken. Child labour is popular throughout as its hard for police to keep track of due to the high amount of people. Therefore they don't bother to keep up with it as there is no possible way to.

The Taj Mahal shows both ends of the spectrum in india. This huge tourist attraction makes audiences wonder  how somewhere like that can exist in the same country as somewhere like the Slums. How something so breathtaking exists along side something so down ridden and poverty filled.  This paints a bigger picture of India's overall  economy. The way Jamal and Salim con the tourists out of money is very accurate in how some people will make their money as it shows how easy it truly is to do, especially when someone doesn't know much about their surroundings.

The transformation of Bombay into Mumbai gives a more accurate representation of how India is a country that is constantly changing and in some ways getting better. India statistically is the country with the fastest growing economy and is the recommended country to invest in because of how quickly its growing. The scene with Jamal and Salim in which they're sitting on a tall building and Salim says how this current area used to be their slum portrays this. In the the ten years that they're away from it at least 3 or 4 huge buildings appear in their place. Mumbai is a constantly evolving place with new things and places appearing consistently

Narrative as a formal system article

I chose this article as it allows talking points to be made about the particular section. Points that can be deconstructed to have different meanings are good for showing how audiences can come to different conclusions and have opinions that differ from one another.

"We may now a great deal about the particular story the film will tell. Perhaps we ave read the book on which the film is based or we have seen the film to which this is na sequel too"

I agree with quote for a number of reasons. Our individual knowledge on a film can change the way we view it and therefore change the narrative. If we have read the book on which the film is based then it creates expectations amongst audiences who have read this particular text. The narrative can therefore be different for these people as they either have an idea on what will follow or know depending on how much the movie deviates away from the source material. Audiences who view films that are sequels as a stand alone will come out with different opinions and thoughts than audiences who have viewed the films predecessors. The phrase 'the more you know' comes to mind as the more insight you have on a particular text will effect how you view it. The narrative may confuse the person who hasn't saw the films predecessor whereas the person who has saw it will most likely fully understand it.

"Typically a narrative begins with one situation; a series of changes occurs according to a pattern of cause and effect"

Most films follow this particular code which allows me to agree with this particular quote.  A state of peace and tranquillity gets transformed into chaos by a series of events. Some films deviate
from this choosing to start with the narrative in full swing but this only really happens when there is the chance of the audience already having an insight to whats going to happen. For examples films that are connected to others or true historical based films. For example Saving Private Ryan starts with the D-Day landings and gets right into the action. This is because the film was released 56 years after the actual event so the majority of people who watch it will have a relatively good idea about whats currently happening.

Overall this resource is very accurate on how Narrative is conveyed and also how narrative can be used to convey different things. It allows for readers to create their own opinions and own view points on what something means. The quote ' A random string of events is sometimes hard to follow ' can have different opinions attached to it depending on who the reader is.  One reader may agree saying that narrative needs to have a certain structure however another may say that  how much you know about the film influences this more than anything else. Overall it leaves its self open for debate which in my opinion is the best response as it leaves itself open for debate which will get people talking about the matter at hand.

Magazine Shows

Magazine Shows
Opening Sequence

The set of the show tends to have different sections about it that will be explored as time goes by. Shows like these tend to have 2-3 hosts to accommodate all the information that needs to be conveyed. The two hosts tend to be people who have worked together before as comedic effect is very prominent in these shows to keep audiences engaged through talking sections. These do not tend to have music except in the title credits or for example in shows like Soccer AM or Blue Peter during challenge sequences or highlights. The camera tends to stay in the same place in a fixed position of where the people are talking or as close ups of the individual person who is speaking. These shows tend to feature special guests, mostly celebrities from the entertainment world.

Setting

Magazine shows tend to have a set location that they're filmed in which is often referred to as the (Show Title) headquarters or studio. 70 % of the show is based here whereas the other 30% tends to be at locations in which challenges take place. These locations give the show some identity for example in Top Gear audiences know Top Gear by the chairs made out of an old car and the test track outside that features heavily in the show

Technical Codes

The camera in these shows takes up basic positions as the majority of the shots tend to be medium or close ups depending on the situation. If the camera needs to show the full group or the hosts talking the the medium shot tends to be the option taken. When focusing on the special guest a lot of close ups are used to show the importance of this person and to make it worth their time as these people tend to be in demand at the time.  The editing tends to be slow paced as the camera doesn't really move a lot and features a lot of continuous shots. Non diegetic music isn't very frequent as a lot of talking takes place however if there is a montage of clips of some kind then there tends to be a music track or sound that can only be heard in the clip so a non diegetic sound.

Characters and Representations

The hosts of the show have no characters to play as they are just being themselves. The common use of characters is a male and a female in which they tend to be around the same age which is different o the news. In the show their roles is to take the show forward by signalling to move onto the next section of the show or asking the special guest that they have on the show questions. If they have an actor on the show they they tend to show segments from the film and question them about certain aspects of the film like for example how a special voice was created, whereas if its an music artist then the questions revolve more around how the upcoming album was recorded, tour dates and then the the release date of the album its self. The hosts are there to help convey this information of the show.

Narrative

Typically their is a structure to the show but not really much of a narrative as the show doesn't tend to be showing any story as its just not the style of it. Top Gear for example starts with a voice over from someone like Jeremy Clarkson boldly saying  'Tonight' and then listing the events that will be shown on the show in a comedic fashion. These tend to be very subtle enigma codes as it doesn't explicitly give the audience a mystery on the levels of Game of Thrones however it gives the audience a very straw clutching mystery by listing the events that will follow. If for example the host says that they will be featuring someone from Game of Thrones on the show then audiences will continue watching as they want to see what the Game of Thrones actor has to say. Todorov's theory doesn't apply to Magazine Shows because of the lack of Beginning, Middle and End. Magazine shows tend to give the audience something to escape to as they're the middle ground between shows like the news and for example The Graham Norton show as they feature plenty of topics that are in the news and also enough celebrities that keep audiences intrigued. Its a less serious version of modern society and tends to laugh at some issues in the world.

Format
Magazine shows tend to have no real series or season like element as there is no real narrative to the run time of the show. The follow a more news based format. For example if a celebrity is promoting a new album or a actor is starring in a new film then they tend to talk about this to them. Shows like Soccer Am for example talk about their celebrities current fame but also use their screen time to quiz them about football and make them do football related challenges. The narratives of the shows are more episode related and don't really feature any continuous storylines.  Shows like blue peter may feature competitions between the presenters that lasts for a limited amount of time.
These shows tend to have different broadcast times depending on the content. Soccer AM is on early Saturday morning as its just before the weekend of fixtures start, also the name "AM" symbolises that its early morning. Top Gear for example is on at 9pm as it features some light hearted humour and mild language therefore it needs the watershed to take place before it airs.
Magazine shows don't really have a plot that moves forward as the episodes go by because it depends on the relevance of the show. This morning runs all year round because the news is never ending whereas Soccer AM stops for a few months when the football season ends as they don't have anything to talk about.

Appeals
Audiences have different media tastes however most people still watch magazine shows for their own personal preference. This morning tends to be on of a morning of course so most audience members tend to catch a bit of this morning on their way out of the house. This Morning and the One Show tend to be watched passively as they're on at times when people tend to be watching tv. The One show is on at 7pm on BBC ONE at least 4 times a week. BBC one is a show that more or less anyone who has a tv can gain access to plus 7pm is time that most families have just finished their tea at so many families tend to be congregated around the tv. Most of the content can be saw as conventional/unconventional because these type of shows are all down to personal preference. Someone like Ed Sheeran might be conventional for some people but unconventional for others.
The level of production tends to stay the same because  its the same concept each episode therefore its very rare they have to spend heavy on production. This only happens if they need to boost their ratings or rearrange the show in some way.
Likeable hosts tend to help with the show as well. Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield on this morning are a very liked duo and their presence adds value to the show.

All Star- Smash Mouth

This song would appeal to someone who likes the alternative genre of music due to its unusualness and happy nature that goes with it.

This song heavily uses the idea that you can be whoever you want to be if you try. This is a song that may appeal moe to children as it features heavily on the soundtrack on the orignal Shrek and that film revolves round someone doing something that they wouldn't usually do so why cant you do the same. The video shows

Semiotic Magazine Analysis

The Magazine is usually summed up by the Masthead as it instantly gives the audience a view and an insight to what the magazine is about. The Masthead in this case is 'SUCESS'. The audience are immediately informed that what they're reading is going to be about is people who have achieved in life or how to achieve in life. The Strapline then sets the tone of the magazine and is usually positioned close to the the Masthead. The Strapline in this case is 'What Achievers Read'. The audience will look at this and belive they are an achiever. Everyone wants to achieve in life so by openly pointing out this is what the magazine is based around the audience will know what to expect.
The Masthead is in complete capitals which shows a level of urgency to get a message out that this magazine is about success. It also fills the entire top 20% of the magazine therefore making it eye catching and enticing for the audience to pick up. The Strapline is done in a very baited manner. A humans main goals from the very beginning is to be successful and achieve so by calling it this is pulls people in with hopes and dreams of achieving in life.

Every magazine has an image of someone famous or relatable on the front cover. The power of stardom is the most used tactic to gain viewers to the magazine. The stars on the magazines tend to be relatable to the topic as well. For example a Body building magazine may have Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson on the cover or a Nuts magazine will tend to have a model on the from purely because they fit the tone of the magazine. In this magazines case it has Leonardo DiCaprio on the front. There isn't an actor in hollywood in this day and age who is associated more with success than DiCaprio. Being a 5 time Academy Award nominee and a 1 time winner he is the pinnacle of success.
The image shows DiCaprio in a nice suit which make him look smart and successful. The suit shows formality and that he is a star in his own right. Theres always the guarantee that this suit will of been made by a high end fashion designer for someone of his status. His hand on his chin shows confidence and he looks like he's in the correct environment. DiCaprio also looks happy. This suggests to the audience that Success is the key to happiness. DiCaprio looks happy as he's successful so why can't the reader do this.

The magazine itself is nice to look at. No one wants to read a magazine that has too much going on, on the page and its not good on the eye. The overwhelming amount of content on the page can put people off. This magazine has the right amount of content for a member of public to pick this up and purchase it. The Magazine has a white and blue theme involved. The font that is in Blue is the important and persuasive information whereas the white in the generic information. The blue font which read Exclusive Interview, Leonardo DiCaprio, Star Power etc are what the reader will look at after the Masthead and Strapline as it stands out. The editors will have chose to put these specific words and names in these font colours as it makes it easier for the reader to know what is inside this magazine.

Every Magazine tends to use Interpellation as it allows them to pul in readers using different techniques. Magazines tend to use puns and this one is the same. Its has quotes like 'Whats Really Behind the Window' when talking about and interview with Microsoft. Microsoft are known for creating Windows and using it as a software to run computers on. Therefore by asking whats behind the window suggests that Magazine is questioning the process that Microsoft take to create there software and possibly showing us how Microsoft do this. This is also done when talking about Leonardo DiCaprio as the magazine reads 'play a role in your own success' Leonardo DiCaprio being an actor has has many different roles throughout his career so by reading the magazine you will learn how to be the star in your own movie that is your life. When talking about Microsoft the magazine has 'Exclusive Interview' written in blue. This is a Unique selling point for the magazine as this interview can only be found in this magazine and no where else. Quotations are also shown in blue when talking about Gary Sinise. These large blue quotation marks let the audience know that these are quotes by a person without having to actually read it. To audiences a celebrities own words are a lot more important that the magazine or newspaper version so by pointing out that these are genuine quotes it appeals to audience.

Magazines all have appeals and specific audiences that it is marketed to and this one is no different. In my opinion SUCESS is marketed to people who are middle and upper class that are looking to do something with their life. Someone who has a degree or is currently working towards one will be interested.Young people who want something big for their future will be interested as well. The magazine also appeals to people starting up business as the front cover tells you that theres tips included for starting a business online and just in general. This is really helpful as some people who want to start a business up may not know how to do this properly however with these tips and guidance they will be able to. The magazine has not specific gender appeal as anyone can succeed. Someone who will be interested will be the succeeder. The Succeeders man goal in life is to be successful so a magazine that has the same name will be the perfect fit for them. The Strapline also reads 'what achievers read'. The magazine is outright telling you that if you ant to achieve and successful you must read this magazine. The magazine uses terminology that people who read the magazine will get. This is like 'playing your own role' and 'whats really behind the window'.  This magazine will be appeal to a niche market as only people who truly want to succeed will read this. The magazine also uses stardom to appeal. Leonardo DiCaprio is one of biggest if the biggest actor in hollywood so by having him on the cover is a USP in its self. The Magazine does have a couple of USPs though. These are the Strapline (What Achievers Read) and the top right and corner which offers a free CD. People love free items so by finding out they have this available to them may draw them in.

The Black Eyed Peas - Where Is The Love?

In my opinion this song would appeal to someone who is a fan of the hip hop as it features a good amount of rap and also casual singing that fit with the beat of the song

This song has a very strong message to take from it and the video is a very important influence in this. So important to the point that the song got a re release in 2016 to combat all the hate crime, terrorism and racism in America and other places all over them world. The video heavily features a question mark which is like the symbolism of the song. When you see that question mark you think this song. The main purpose of this video is to get the message out that love still exists but we just need to find it. The video shows people trying to Spread Awareness of the issue and because of this the video was shown around schools everywhere due to how inspirational it is.

The camera work uses lots of close ups and multiple montages of clips to get a message across. Whenever theres children in the shot it always seems to be a close up. This in my opinion is to show that children are the main focus of the video as its their world that we as a nation are influencing by causing war and having  issues like terrorism and racism. Its their world that will grow into however if we keep causing problems they won't have a world to grow into. Also whenever the sequence of 'Father Father' starts the camera focuses on children again and in my opinion this is because they're still young and naive enough to believe in a god. The God to them still exists so it gives them something to believe in and gives them hope for the future. The video also stereotypes the police to be against world peace as each shot they're fitted into it involves them stopping the people from getting the message out. This is an example of opinionated editing.

MACKLEMORE & RYAN LEWIS - CAN'T HOLD US FEAT. RAY DALTON

Cant hold us by Macklemore & Ryan Lewis featuring Ray Dalton would appeal to someone who likes the rap genre of music for a number of reasons.

The lyrics of the song fit very well with the video as it features lots of motivational features. For example the video features someone sky dividing out of a plane, a, man jumping out of a window into a crowd of people and a man sailing across the ocean on a boat. This in my opinion is to fit with the title 'Cant hold us' to show that no one can limit you as a person and you can achieve anything you want. The video its self is to show a story of how the flag is passed around the world as it shows many different locations which suggest a worldwide scale. The flag has 'The Heist' wrote on it which was the name of Macklemore's album at the time so in my opinion this is a marketing strategy by him to get his album out around the world to people. The video features many parallel narratives to

The camera work fits perfectly with the video. Almost throughout the whole song the shots cut on the beat which is a good example of high quality editing. To show how high quality the video was it even features a credits scene to show the sheer size and scale of this project and at a length of 7:03 its understandable why. This is very different to other video that tend to sit between the 3 and 4 mi ute scale giving it quite a unique feel to it. I feel that the length of the video and the advertisement of the album in the video were very important and good features to include.

Labrinth - Express Yourself

Express Yourself is a song that appeals to people who're a fan of the Pop genre of music as this is a pop song effectively and has a very happy feel to it.

Express Yourself teaches people in everyday life to maybe be a bit more open about themselves and not worrying about what other people think as you're your own person. Labyrinth also suggests that everyone has something special inside of them but its just case of showing this to everyone. The narrative uses generic situations to show this. For example a bright pink and blue house which is on a road full of white houses only. This is an example of expressing yourself and being your own person.

The camera work mostly cuts in and out of different situations and uses a variety of different shots to film the video. The editing has no real pattern as it just shows different examples of people expressing themselves.

The video also features some iconic scenes that have ben taken from other events. The shot of Labyrinth writing on the board with chalk taken from outside the window is almost identical to the opening credits of the Simpsons which show  Bart Simpsons doing the same.

This video could be saw as a subliminal message in a way to encourage people to be less robotic and to avoid just fitting in with the norm

MAGIC! - Rude

Rude by MAGIC! would appeal to someone who is a fan of Bob Marley and other Reggae artists as there music very much follow this theme.

The video shows how in certain situations the girls father will dislike the boyfriend and how it can cause problems most effectively in relationships. The video therefore revolves around the lead singers mission to get his girl and get her fathers blessing so he can marry her. The video also doesn't show if he ever gets the blessing so we as the audience are left with what is almost a cliffhanger. On the whole its a bit of a relatable video to some people.

The video uses a lot of close ups for emotion and to gain a personal relationship with the audience. There is also a use of mid ranges to mostly show the bands dancing and singing. The video runs a parallel with the song lyrics as the lyrics almost describe each action the band does. Theres a use of shaky cam too, mainly to fit in with the whole Reggae feel of the song to make it quite wavy. This is quite unique to the video as shaky camera is usually put down to a lack of skill when holding the camera.

Text that changed my life !

A media text that changed my life is the video game Alien Isolation. Winner of 2014's game of the year award Alien Isolation delivers a chilling story based around Amanda Ripley, daughter of Ellen Ripley portrayed by Oscar nominated actress Sigourney Weaver on the big screen. A combination of action/ survival horror Alien Isolation can be thrilling yet terrifying at the same time.

I first experienced this text on Christmas day 2014. My love for Red Barrels critically acclaimed horror survival game Outlast fuelled my desire to consume Alien Isolation however what I got was something that was very special to play and something which I love very much.

This text changed my life for a number of reasons. As someone who is a seasoned gamer Alien Isolation delivered a challenge that on some stages id never really had before and really tested me as a gamer but also on a mental level due to the horror aspect. With the constant threat of the Alien along with many other threats such as the Synths, Facehuggers and even Humans Alien Isolation is out to ruin you day from the very outset. The wide range of threats leave you on the edge of your seat as you know that at any one moment you could be under threat.

Alien Isolation can challenge you mentally as well. Many of the levels require you to solve puzzles which is a lot easier said than done. The constant threat of the Alien leads you to want to rush the puzzles which can result in you getting them wrong. This is the paranoia of knowing that you could die at any given moment.

The design of the Alien is a complete replica of the one from the original movie from the ground up. It even behaves like the one from the original movie and because of this its a problem for the player. The Alien is unpredictable and doesn't have a pattern that the player can work out. This for me was a problem as every time I died was due to a jump scare that I wasn't expecting and resulted in me crying and turning the game off. The paranoia of the game resulted in me googling how long the level I was about to be playing would take because it was basically mental torture for me to endure for a lengthy amount of time therefore I had to mentally prepare and get myself syced up to play the game which is something I've never really experienced before with gaming.. I can vividly remember a mission on the game taking me between 2-3 hours and upon completing it giving the biggest sigh of relief and being too scared to go to bed in fear of the Alien coming for me.

This game is undoubtedly one of the best games I've ever played and I know this because of what I had to go through to complete it. This was no normal gaming experience for me and because of this I very much hope they produce a sequel to Alien Isolation

Dear John

Dear John is a film which revolves around the whole Long Distance Relationship and features typical Romance genre conventions.

The trailer starts with the two characters meeting on a sunny beach in California and then leads to the two of them getting together. The sunny beach symbolises all the good things that come with relationships and how happy they're to start with. The way the characters meet is a common factor in the Romance genre. A male doing something nice for a female is extremely common and of that particular style. This is a comparison to the middle of the trailer when John tells Savanna that he's going of to war. Whereas the start was all happy and the sunny the trailer goes bleaker and more conflict prone compared to the the happy light hearted start of the trailer. This shows how the film explores the problems of relationships and how they can be overcome.

A big theme in the trailer is how once the characters kiss everything seems to go wrong. This explores modern day problems with relationships as once there is a kiss involved, there is then feelings involved and these are what shape a relationship. This is then when the problems start. This film takes it a step further though as the relationship then becomes a long distance one which makes things harder especially because John is in the special forces and the only way they can communicate is through letters. This symbolises the iconography of the genre as it explorers more real life situations that military families endure on an every day basis.

The cast that have been chosen for this film have been chose for a reason. Channing Tatum and Amanda Seyfried are both attractive people which is essential for a romance film ad the attractiveness of them both appeals to people more than it would for two people who aren't as attractive. There're also both really well known actors. Channing Tatum in particular who is now a huge star so from a narrative and genre point of view the status of the actors is huge factor in pushing the story forward.

Dear John features a lot of unanswered questions in the trailer that are known as enigma codes. Example of this are 'Will John come out of the forces','will they end up together' or 'What happens to Johns dad.' All of these unanswered questions fuels the audiences curiosity and appeals as a compelling story because audiences just have to know things and the unknown is frustrating. The film features action codes which help push the story forward. these are scenes like John jumping into the sea for Savanna's bag and John going back into the army. These contribute to keeping the story interesting because if it didn't have these the film would end after 10 minutes as there would be no story to tell.

Advertisisng Appeals

This advert conveys humour by using the effect of skittles on the audience. The advert shows that the skittles touch can be acquired by eating skittles resulting in the man being scared to touch any item in fear that it will turn into to skittles. This advertisement is funny in its own way that it parallels with peoples real life situations as many people are known to be clumsy and somehow manage to break everything that they touch

This advert targets the mainstreamer as skittles are a very popular brand of sweet that are bought worldwide. the advert also combines real life situations into it which makes it more relatable to people and sticks in peoples minds

Image result for jump in xbox
Xbox's jump ahead slogan was incorporated following the launch of the Xbox one as the previous console the Xbox 360 had the slogan jump in. this signifies how Xbox wanted to show that this product was a step up from their previous and it fitted perfectly with advertising. The slogan tells the audience that this product is new and by purchasing it they will be further ahead in technology than people who don't have the console.

Microsoft have used a very straight forward message in which they give audience instructions as they tell them what to do. The slogan tells the audience that the new Xbox console is technologically advanced compared to other gaming consoles such as the PlayStation 4. This is Microsoft competing with Sony for bragging rights

Image result for shock tactics advertisingThis advert uses shock tactics to provoke a response out of the audience. This advert would be saw as shocking by many as it shows a girl who is relatively young probably about teenager age dead on the floor. People in society tend to respond differently when a picture of a dead child is shown due to the fact that in society young people are meant to be protected and looked after as no one is mean to die young as its not what anyone plans.

This advert is trying to send a message to always be vigilant when near roads as the girl who has died has clearly not been aware of her surroundings and has only focuses on one specific thing which has ultimately cost her, her life. The advert uses scare tactics to warn people about road safety at all times.

Image result for stereotype advertsThis Dr pepper advert shows text saying 'all 23 flavours. just 10 manly calories' and 'its not for women' this instantly goes against the argument that men and women are equal as the advert talks about the drink having manly calories which in itself says women shouldn't drink Dr pepper. It also stereotypes how women constantly talk about their weight more and by calling the calories manly it suggests that women just cannot handle Dr pepper as it is. This argument completely blows this idea into proportion as the advert blatantly states that this drink is not for women which is stereotypically offensive and also goes against the 2010 Equality Act

Image result for intertextual adverts
Vodaphone have used a character from one of the most famous films franchises of all time to convey their point across. Vodaphone have conveyed their point using the speech style of Jedi Master Yoda from Star Wars. Yoda has a way of talking that usually consists of him saying the second half of his sentence before the first  therefore creating a very iconic piece of language. Everyone knows how Yoda talks so by using this they will have an advert that is relatable to the majority of people have saw star wars at some point in their life. People will recognise the reference therefore creating an advert that people will remember due to the iconic character that is involved.

Image result for cheryl cole l'orealCheryl Fernandez-Versini has been the face of  L'OREAL for a long time now and this works to the advantage of L'OREAL for a few reasons. She as a person is classed as one of the most prominent figures in the media as she's famous, she's a singer and most importantly she's never out of the public eye so people look up to her and aspire to be her. Having a face like her on your adverts suggests to the audience that if Cheryl Fernandez-Versini uses L'OREAL then you should too as she is one of the most beautiful and stunning celebrities that Great Britain has to offer. This suggests that by using L'OREAL products you will be able to look like she does which most females would definitely buy into. This represents real ambition by L'OREAL to succeed as a company

I generally couldn't find an advert that suggests Reward and Punishment so I'm sorry :(

Active and Passive Audiences

Two examples of theories associated with the effects debate are the densensistation model and the sensitation model. The densensistation model is a long term theory that follows the idea that if someone is exposed to a particular media type for a long amount of time then they will become immune to this particular type. For example if someone constantly watches romance films they will therefore feel less heartfelt when something sad or upsetting happens as in theory they will of saw this type of story may times before. Sensitation on the other hand is the complete opposite. This theory goes with the idea that if someone is exposed to the same type of media repeatedly they will start to believe the message and ideologies of the text more and more. For example if someone plays violent video games over and over they will be more likely to become violent themselves.

Audience Reception can come in two different forms. One being active and the other being passive. An active audience reception describes that audiences have their own opinions about media texts that aren't fuelled by anyone else. it also suggests that audiences choose what media texts they decide to consume. A theory which supports this is the uses and gratification model created by Blumer and Katz. This theory has four sections to it. Escapism and entertainment allows the audience to consume what lets them escape from the real word. Social interaction is about how the audience discusses media texts with others. Personal identity allows the audience to consume the media that defines them as a person and finally information and knowledge which allows audiences to consume media that informs them.
A passive audience on the other hand suggests that audiences don't have their own opinions about specific media texts and the media itself tells the audiences what they should look at and think of with particular texts. A theory which backs this up is the hypodermic syringe model which is a short term model. This model suggests that the audience will take away a message from a text that fits its context. for example if a text is violent the audience will take away a violent message and be violent themselves. This theory suggest that audiences are always going to be passive an that is never going to change.

I don't believe that violence on television causes violence in real life to a very far point. People choose what message they want to take away from a text out of their own accord. if someone takes a message that they should go out and be violent towards others then that's the message they take. However with this particular topic all factors have to be considered. The majority of people who do go out and be violent after watching something violent tend to have some sort of mental issue or problem at home that leads to them being this way. This topic in particular is just too broad to say that violent television is what causes violence as their is a lot more than meets the eye to it.

Active audience theories are lot more acceptable for a number of reasons. Active theories understand that we as a human race are all individual people therefore we're all different and that no one is the same. Active theories allow us to be different whereas passive treats us like we're all the same. A common theme throughout humanity is that if all humans didn't have different personalities or beliefs then we would basically be just robots. The passive theory suggests that humans are all just robots and they do what they're told to however we know that isn't the case. Possibly in the past when the world was much more darker and things like marshal law existed everywhere the passive theory would of been acceptable however in modern society it just isn't right.

Gears of War 4 is a media text that I have been consuming recently and I like it for a number of reasons. Playing the game allows me to escape and disappear from everyday struggles and be my own person. The violence of the game allows me to let off steam when needed and also endure in something that I love. As the game is new it allows me to have Social interaction with people about the game as whenever something new comes out people tend to discuss the good and bad points about the game. GOW4 is a very violent and gory game so it is like my personal identity as it defines me as a person. My particular taste in video games is violence so it suits me perfectly. Finally the game is the fourth in the series so it feeds me information about what has happened between the previous game and what happens in the actual game itself. It also possibly feeds me information that a small group of people can overcome any sort of challenge that thrown at them to deal with

This add is marketing aftershave by Chanel called inevitable with Brad Pitt in the background. A preferred reading to this would be that if you wear Chanel aftershave you can be like Brad Pitt. Brad Pitt is classed as a Hollywood heartthrob and is also one of the most famous actors on the planet. Its name is inevitable so this could mean anything so therefore if you want something in life then its inevitably going to happen for you. Brad Pitt is also looking at the bottle itself so someone could take from this that if you wear Chanel people will look at you.
A oppositional reading to this is that why have Chanel chose Brad Pitt to be in the add. He symbolises fame and success so what if someone wants to wear Chanel and doesn't have those things. Does it mean that they're not allowed to wear it just because they aren't famous or good looking enough. Someone could also say why do you have to wear Chanel for people to notice you. If you're a man and you cant afford Chanel then you may think that because you don't have the best aftershave on women are not going to notice you.

Active Audiences Work

My media text is Forrest Gump which is a 1994 film that was released starring Tom Hanks and directed by Robert Zemeckis. The film was a huge blockbuster hit and as a result of this the film picked up 7 academy awards including awards for TomHanks as best actor and Robert Zemeckis as best director. Forrest Gump perfectly fits into the Youngs and Rubicoms style of Audience Classification as everyone went to watch this movie when it was released as Tom Hanks had previously reeled in the academy award for his role in Philadelphia. Therefore Forrest Gump would be for someone in the mainstream catorgory.

Encoders are the people who have designed the product so in this case the encoders are the people who helped create the film like the director, producers and writers etc..I believe the encoders are trying to convey a good story but also send out a message at the same time. The main character in the film has some sort of disability that is never actually specified in the film however the story telling fits perfectly with the fact Forrest has this disability. In the film forrest succeeds at many different tasks that includes American football, going in the army, saving lives, vent a ing pong champion and much much more. Forrest does all these amazing tasks even though he has a disability and this sends the message that no one has to be perfect to succeed in life. this is what i believe the encoders were trying to convey in the film.
Many different ideologies have been put into this film help convey the message and these have different meanings. one ideology in the film is about how the USA is the all powerful race and the heroes of the world. Forest Gump is a very patriotic film as it has Forrest Play American Football which isn't really played anywhere else hence the name. Forrest enters the army which is the ultimate portrayal of being a patriot and even when he plays ping pong he stay how he's playing for the American team and not just himself. The film is based around many different American cities and features plenty of Nostalgia like Elvis Presley learning his trademark hip swing, the Vietnam war and JFK being shot so its like the ultimate American Ideologies. The film could even be saw as one big propaganda stunt for America.
I believe the text celebrates how a truly emotional and an amazing story can be told through cinema and only through cinema. This is shown in the film through the way Forrest tells the story. The people that he sits next to on the bench for the majority of the film can only use their imagination to think about what Forrest's life was truly like whereas we as the audience are physically watching the events of his life unfold. An example of not being able to appreciate the story telling of cinema is done by a man himself who doesn't believe the story what forrest is telling. The creators of this film execute this task perfectly. Someone who doesn't appreciate the power of cinematic story telling truly will after watching Forrest Gump.
Forrest Gump has many underlying messages in the text such as the level of patriotism and how your childhood shapes the person you come out to be however the most important message in the film is how disability shouldn't stop you from doing what you want. This film is powerful message to people with disabilities as it tells them that they can do whatever they want with their life regardless of their condition. A job that the film makers will have had in mind when creating the film will have been to show how people with disabilities can still have an amazing life. The situation with Jenny also is very important in the film. In the film Jenny as a child clearly suffered from a damaged childhood due to a father who is very over affectionate and very paedoplhillic in a sense and the film puts this in a very light hearted manner. The film describes it through Forrest's point of view who sees everything literally and believes how Jenny's father is with her is out of love however in reality this is huge problem. Forests point of view allows the movie to still be light hearted however it also addresses one of the biggest issues in society today without really going into detail and people who pick up on this will walk away from the film thinking about this issue meaning the film creators have got this message across.
Forrest Gump teaches us that life is too short however life is also what you make of it at the same time. Forrest proves that nobody has to be perfect to have a successful life but that you only have to try hard enough. Forrest manages to achieve so much in life even with some form of disability so if Forrest can do that what can you do?. Forrest goes through life seeing the death of his mother and his wife Jenny. Jenny in particular dies really young leaving Forrest with Forrest Jnr to raise alone. Jenny dies at a young age in comparison to other people so the film itself teaches people to do as much as they possibly can in life. Her death is a reminder of how precious life truly is and that it can end at any point.

An Oppositional view of Forrest Gump is very valid to some people for a number of reasons. An example of this is how people from Southern USA are portrayed in the film. The area that Forrest is from is full of rednecks and people like Jenny's dad who abuse children and even stereotypically people who marry their brothers and sisters. This in some sense is true however it is portrayed to happen a lot more than  it actually does. A person who opposes this will understand that this type of thing does happen in that part of the USA however they will not agree with it and have their own view point. A second view point is that first important character that dies in the film is Bubba who comes from a black background and is raised in 1960's America which at the time was still very racist. The death of Sam Cook is a perfect example of this. An oppositional view would agree that at this time black men were sent to the front first to die however they still believe that his death is not a very good thing to have in the film as the first one.

Without doubting that Forrest Gump is a truly amazing film some people will dislike the film for reasons that are personal to them therefore having a negotiated view. A big feature of the film is how patriotic the film is. Everything in Forrest Gump has the special America twist to it. Some who had an opposed reading might not understand why everything so heavily revolves around America. For example why would someone from Vietnam be able to watch Forrest Gump being able to believe the story telling. Forrest Gump features a scene that shows Vietnamese soldiers completely massacring the America soldiers. We as the audience are positioned with the Americans as Forrest is our main character and is from Alabama. Someone from Vietnam might want to know why the film doesn't show all the horrifying and destructive acts the Americans did to them.

Daredevil Season 2 | Review

Following up Marvels debut Netflix title with  2 of Daredevil was never going to be an easy task as the first season was gritty, dark and gave audiences something different from the generic MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe) and showed us how super hero's could be darker but just as good in every single way. Matt Murdoch (Charlie Cox) is now in full swing earing his Daredevil costume which was absent from the majority of season 1 however its absence provided good story telling and a reason for us to wait to see it. Season 2 did an excellent job of not just repeating season 1 and giving us something different which many TV shows fail to do.

With the villainous Wilson Fisk (Vincent D'Onofrio) behind bars it was clear that new characters needed to be introduced and Daredevil season 2 very much did this by giving us the Netflix version of The Punisher (Jon Bernthal) and a fan favourite that all fans complained about being absent from the first season in Elektra (Elodie Yung).

Jon Bernthal's casting to play Frank Castle is one pf the best casting choices ever in TV. He is undoubtedly perfect for the role. Playing  most famously Shane in The Walking Dead Jon Bernthal always delivers a darker style to his performance almost to the point that he himself as an actual thug. His look and character costume by its self is enough to make me think to myself don't mess with that guy. Bernthals portrayal of Frank Cstle was that good he earned himself a spin off show starring him as the Punisher.

Elodie Yungs Elektra on the other hand is a whole different kettle of fish. She portrays a character that is emotional yet violent at her core which led to a very complex character that many fans were able to relate to. Elodie herself stated that her core focus when playing Elektra was to remind audiences how much Elektra truly loves Matt Murdoch. The best way to describe Elektra is a psychopath with a heart of gold.

The two contributr to the story telling magnificently. The first four episodes are focused solely on the punisher and just as the calm is coming the storm immediately hits with the introduction of Elektra giving us an content filled action packed second season.

Fans wanted to see more of Nelson(Elden Henson) and Murdoch and they most definitely got it as the bulk of the second season is focused around a court trial as considering Matt Murdoch and Foggy Nelson are layers, the first season was absence of any court cases which left sour taste in fans mouths however the second season very much delivered this.

Karen Paige (Deborah Ann Wool) is back doing Karen Paige things however apart from having a bit of a story arc with Frank Catsle (The Punisher) she doesn't really do much for me personally as a character and still seems to be a flashing beacon for danger.

Overall the second season of Daredevil delivered massively receiving good reviews from fans and critics and also set up The Defenders(2017 Netflix Season) and the third season of the show nicely which was confirmed to have been renewed by Netflix in July 2016 however fans will have to wait till 2018 to get their hands on season three however who's to say we wont get any Daredevil action in The Defenders

Audience Classification Homework

The Mainstreamer is someone who sticks with the current trends. If people are talking about something you can almost guarantee that the mainstreamer will be there joining in with the conversation. Mainstreamers tend to be set in their ways and very rarely try something new or something which is out their comfort zone. An example  of something a mainstreamer would consume is Game Of Thrones. Game Of Thrones is the most popular and most talked about TV show currently of television. Set in the world of Westeros it's capitulating story line, depiction of gender roles and nudity is some of the best ever. the perfect recipe for a mainstreamer.

The Succeeder is someone who constantly works at their goals. This type of person only stands for the best and doesn't accept anything less. If their is opportunity to improve and become even more powerful then the Succeeder will do it. A media text that the Succeeder would consume is The Apprentice. The Apprentice is a yearly show involving 12 business men/woman looking wo win an investment from Lord Sugar himself. The Succeeder would consume this as they can use this as a benchmark to push on and achieve their goals in life.

An Aspirer is someone who has goals in life to be as perfect looking as physically possible. Their own opinion is never really considered as they're fuelled on other peoples faults that they have as a person. Always looking to improve a media text the aspirer would consume is Britain's Got Talent as much like the contestants on the show they all aspired to be rich, famous and in some cases physically immaculate so therefore by watching this show the Aspirer can see that nothing is impossible and they can achieve anything in life.

The Explorer is someone who constantly wants something new. They prefer activity's that aren't popular and not many people no about. They're always looking to push the boundaries on what they can and cannot leading to a wonderful and adventurous imagination. An example of a media context that they would consume is the original 2008 title Mirrors Edge. Mirrors Edge  is an action-adventure platformer developed by EA DICE and published by Electronic Arts. At the time of release Mirrors Edge was a new genre of game that not many people had considered playing. The game revolves around free running in its core so the explorer and this game at the time were a perfect match.

(1b)I believe these categories are both good and bad at defining audience type. in society no one is the same so having a wide variety of ways to define people is very clever. Most categories used to describe people are all different in their own right and it allows society to fit people into a social classification plan and also fit them into where they belong. There are problems though with the system as classifications like 'The Succeeder' and 'The Aspirer' are both very similar and it can be difficult to see a marginal line. Both revolve around the idea of working at something until it is perfection. therefore if someone's goal is to work at something that involves them being amazingly attractive then which category are they. Anther problem is that is someone identifies themselves as more than one category there is no way of defining which one they truly are suggesting that the model doesn't properly work.

(1c)A program that is on television right now is EastEnders which is a soap opera and is often described as the best and most popular due to its somewhat captivating storylines. The show is on usually between 7 and 8pm therefore making it a post tea time TV show. Due to the time that its on anyone could watch EastEnders however I believe its prodomently aimed at Woman as a whole. This doesn't mean that men cant watch it but it tends to be on at the same time as the Champions league or late 7:45 kick off games meaning men would most likely be more interested in the football. A show like EastEnders means investing a lot of your time into so you can keep up with the storyline therefore women tend to have more patience as a whole and will stick by the show. The show also
features majorly problems amongst family life which women tend to specialise in.

(1d) I think that a show like Game Of Thrones would appeal the groupie as watching Game Of Thrones allows them to join into conversations with other people who watch the show therefore they will be accepted in society. Someone who watches The Apprentice would be part of the Innovators as they are the type of people who want to be rich and powerful and leave their mark on their world and by innovating they will do this. A viewer of Britain's Got Talent could possibly be Cynic or are Egoists. Cynics tend to use shows like BGT to complain about as they either have nothing else to complain about or are just jealous of people being successful. The Egoists on the other hand would watch BGT as it gives them a starting point on how people can get the most out of life and how they can possibly do it for themselves. Someone who plays Mirrors Edge could be a Drifter as Drifters don't tend to know what they want so someone who plays Mirrors Edge might be playing just for something different or to get a new perspective on life. Someone who watches EastEnders would be described as a Groupie as they want to be able to join in the conversations about what happened on the previous nights show. This allows them to understand if they fit in socially.
