Reading Rap: How do people interpret music?

This article was written by David Aidoo and appeared in the 201 edition on media magazine.

This article looks into how different people interpret different styles of music. He starts off by mentioning his opinion on the top 40 music that is considered to be the best of the best that is always played on radio stations like Capital fm and Kiss fm. He mentions that these songs tend to lead into a style that goes along with it including fashion trends, ways of dance, meme's ect. Also, it mentions about the conspiracies that modern music is 'brainwashing' the younger generation even though the music is pretty basic standard that 'doesn't take much interpreting'. He mentions that the music we hear on a daily bais is constructed in a 'rudimentary format, lacking taste and feeling'  

He goes on into leading into his main point of the article, instead of attempting to find the meaning behind the song people should just listen to the song instead of listening in for meaning behind the song; 'That's where basic interpretation comes from: the emotions that the music evokes'

This is where he bring in his argument of rap music. He argues that when it comes to rap music the artist creating the music should create the lyrics as the music is playing. This way meaning that the artist will 'connect with the beat more' and get a general feel for the words from the emotion the beat evokes in them. He also uses Twista as an example of this. In 1992 he gained a Guinness world record of spitting out 598 syllables. This proves that the words that he is saying can't have full meaning behind them as they are just following out of his mouth; that people listen to rappers like this as they enjoy the 'perpetual rhythm and flow of it all' 

He also criticises websites like Rap Genius that allow audiences to put their interpretations of what each verse of the song means. He believes that this is a dangerous thing to too as art should just be left alone and not tempered with. 

At the start of this article I do agree with what Aidoo is saying that top 40 music is just biased on a format that many artists stick to in order for them to just stay at the top of the charts and to keep their followers. You can clearly see this in the song that is currently still in the charts after 9 months of the realsese by Justin Bieber called 'What do you mean?' 


This song takes a very numerical form that is also prominent in many songs. It begins with a calm steady beat as Bieber sings the verse to kick off the beginning of the song. Then as it beings to go into the chorus it pick up a dance beat. 

UK Drama Research and Analyse

The UK television dramas are apart of the biggest TV genre's to run on. UK dramas air around the whole of the world. These shows usually run on the 3 main broadcasting networks in the UK; ITV, BBC and Channel 4.

Some examples of these would be: 

• Doctor Who
• Sherlock
• Downton Abbey 
• Happy Valley 
• Granchester
• Skins 
• Poldark 
• Misfits
• Merlin 
• Being human 

Format

Drama shows usually run in series shown after a few months or even a year (in the sense of Sherlock 2 or even 3 years) break from being on ours screens. Its is normally shown on telle durning the winter periods of the year so mainly at the start and they end; they also mainly have christmas special episodes where the characters have a completely different plot line to what is usual within their series just for the soul purpose of fitting into christmas. Examples of these are: Doctor Who, Sherlock, Downton Abbey, Merlin.  They would usually broadcast at this time because it is more likely that people are going to be in the house on the couch in front of the TV and can't watch a heavy drama. There is usually a continuos story that runs through all of the series with the same characters going through something which is usually a tragic event until the whole programme comes to a close. In Skins it is a bit different. It follows 3 groups of friends going through the two years at the same college; as one group graduates the next group come in for their time. These are known as the different generations in skins. 

Appeals

Some may use drama in different ways. Some may use it for personal identity from the subplots within the show. Like in Doctor who the person watching couldn't really identify with the fact that he is a thousand year old alien whose face changes and travels through time and space. However, they could identify with the struggles that he faces and the emotion that him or his companion feels. They could  also identify with the character in skins more as it is a realism series. Information is another one of the uses & gratifications that someone could use dramas for, especially when watching period dramas like Downton Abbey and Poldark. They would get information from these shows 

Representation of Johnny Depp

Text 1 - GQ magazine Feb 2010 

This image of Johnny Depp is a more natural and relaxed image which many people will not have seen him like within the media. The main cover line the issue is "the 25 most stylish men in the world". This coincides with the image of Johnny which has been taken at a point where he is relaxed and smiling. This adds a positive thought about Johnny into the audiences mind automatically and taking a twist on what they would normally see in the media about Johnny such as his drug addiction and his 'bad boy' image. This is like a stripped down version of Johnny.

The encoders of this text, for example the photographer, will see Johnny as being a normal man who, just like everybody else, so they have taken this picture in a way that looks natural and stripped back from what is usually seen and expected from him. Their opinions of him is that he is a "stylish" and an attractive man which is shown through the fact that he is on the cover for this issue. You can also see that they think Johnny is an attractive man naturally and when he is stripped back because they have chosen for him to be photographed with nothing of his face and no expensive or edgy clothing; they just have him being him, which is what their opinion of him would be. 

Many audience members may take the preferred reading of this text and agree with their statement that he is one of the most stylish men. It is likely that they would take this reading because Johnny is usually seen as this by many generations and from many of his ages. He is identified as being a 'heart throb' and as a 'bad boy' which many people would find attractive. However, some people may take an oppositional reading to this as they would not agree with their opinion of Johnny Depp and just Johnny Depp in general. 

In today's society their are mental images of what the perfect man and woman look like. These images are reinforced into our minds on a daily basis from the media that is all around us. A key thing on whether or not you are deemed to fight into this ideal image is the style that you portray; style is important. This ideology is being reinforced and Johnny Deep is an example of who the see to be the 25 most stylish men. 

Text 2 - Dior Sauvage 2015 

This is a photo shoot for Dior's new fragrance Sauvage that Johnny Depp had modelled for. Within this image they have Johnny in his typical look of eyeliner, rings, slicked hair and shirt. These are the type of things that picture goes along with Johnny. The light sky that is behind him really emphasis's the darkness that he has on him and possible the darkness that is in him. This matches with the colouring that the bottle has that is shown on the right bottom corner.

The encoders of this text must think that Johnny is kind of the embodiment of masculinity, darkness and badness. This is what they are hopefully trying to sell along side with their fragrance. The photographer  would have decided that he his eye sight is directed away from the camera and his whole head turned along side it because it. This would be because they think that Johnny can be quite a serious and mysterious person who mainly keeps himself to himself, therefore he wouldn't make direct eye contact because he is trying to his something beneath his 'look'. The editor would have put the name of the fragrance in the middle on top of Johnny because it is like they are putting a label on him, that he is 'Sauvage' which is a French word for 'wild'. This shows that they think of him as being this 'wild' person.

Many people may take the preferred reading of this if they know what Johnny Depp is like. He is more known for being this edgy and bad character. So by seeing somebody labelling him as this wild person they are more likely to agree with this label and go along with that they are saying. People could, however, take a negotiated reading to this and just think that Dior are just over exaggerating some points about him that the public see.

Text 3 - Johnny Deep visiting a children's hospital 2015



In this text we see Johnny visiting a children's hospital while being in one of his most famous characters, Jack Sparrow. In this text he is telling jokes, asking for hugs from the children and posing for pictures with them. Even though he is being a character during this time it says a lot about Johnny as a person, that he is willing to take time to go to a hospital a cheer up some children who are suffering. As this is taking place while he is being Jack Sparrow it is representing his film along side as his good deed.  

The encoders of this would have seen Johnny as being a heroine and a dream maker by the fact that this was originally based around one girl. They will have reflected him in this light as they would think that he deservers some recognition that what he has done is pretty incredible and heart warming.   

Childish Gambino - Sober

Visual style/Mise-en-scene
In this video you would think that the song in non-digetic but it is actually digetic and you can tell that by the way that you can hear things going on inside the take away song like the clattering of plates that are happening over the song. The camera swaps between close ups of Gambino and the girl. The many shots that we get of her are close ups on her face so that we can see her emotions to him dancing and acting out the song lyrics. at one point in the video the camera goes outside the window so that you are looking in you can still hear the music however you can only her it coming form inside so it is like you are looking in on something that is real. The lighting in the is neutral and still until the music style changes and his dancing change into something more serious, the lighting goes into studio lights and the camera goes into a low angle shot so that you are looking up. This emphasises his moves and shots that it shows how that has started to be serious instead of just joking around. However, after this part of music it goes back to how it was at the start so does shot type and the lighting in an instant. 

Narrative 
The story behind this is that Donald is in a fast food restaurant waiting for his food and so is the girl. To try and impress her he is dancing and lip syncing the song which is playing in thee when in actual fact is his on song sober. This is entertaining to watch because it is a simple narrative of a man trying to impress the girl however he isn't doing well and e can tell by the girls reaction to this happen by when she moves away. In the end she starts to enjoy what he is doing and joins in for a second but then she goes to get her food and leaves. this leads the video to having a reinstatment of the equilibrium as Donald goes back to the chair and position that he was in at the beginning of the video. You know this story is being shown and that the audience are looking in from when the camera goes outside and is pointing through the window. 

Conventional/Unconventional
This video is conventional as it is a simple narrative of boy meets girl and boy tries to impress her. The dancing that he is doing to act out the lyrics pull the audience in and make the narrative interesting and humorous which will also make people want to watch this video more than just one time. A way that he has broken the conventional music video expectations is by making the music be a digetic sound in the video and also putting in sounds that you would expect to happen in a fast food place like dishes clashing together. 

What works 
I like how there is a mixture of digetic and non-digetic sounds as it gives the video a rel feel to is as if you are also in the place watching in on this happening. 

The masthead 'vogue' is a familiar saying that is associated with posing and being a powerful beautiful woman. Vogue has many connotations of being a classic and sophisticated; it is usually a word that would be used in high fashion. By seeing the word 'Vogue' in capital letters you would expect it to discuss the importance of fashion and for it to express the ideology that self image is an important key to being a powerful, successful woman. The font of this masthead is very bold and has a slight twist to the classic font that is used on official papers, they do this by have some lines thinner that the others in the letter. This exposes how this magazine is trying to take a different look on fashion to make something that is simple and classic into a new re-invented high end piece. 

The main image is of Lady Gaga. Lady Gaga is know for being an eccentric, confident, fashionable woman. By putting her face over the masthead in the middle of it emphasises her self empowerment. They would have put her on the front as people would know this about Lady Gaga and her embodiment would correspond with the banner that states that this issue is a 'power issue'. Her facial expression is as if she is staring down the audience and pulling they in; this is the classic 'vogue' pose. The fact that she is pulling this pose over the title shows their ideology that they way that you put yourself cross physically is more important than how you do it verbally, actions over words. 

The colour that is themed through out this cover is pink. It is used on Lady Gaga's wig and the main points that they would like the audience to see. The background colour of pastel green complements the pink that they have used. This is a typical thing that you would see in a high fashion magazine; taking two minimalistic colours that complement each other and put them in so that the background colour helps the other colour to stand out. By doing this the company are showing that they have an eye for things that go well an look high fashion and by following the tips that they tell you, you also will stand out and be a fashionable, powerful woman. 

To draw the audience in there is a direct mode of address with Lady Gaga's eye's looking straight into the audience's eyes, causing them to be pulled into the image and resulting in them looking into the magazine with more detail. From this image you would expect a very powerful women dominated issue of Vogue.

Genre Analysis

Avengers: Age of Ultron
           

To begin with the film shows a shot of New York city at night where everything is peaceful and calm. This suggests that throughout the trailer we are going to see this peaceful city no longer be calm and peaceful causing the superheroes to stop the villain to save the city. This is a common convention of superhero films; the hero must save their city and the people in it. This could be the directors ideology that a society should stand together in times of trouble weather that be war or any type of mass tragedy that takes place e.g 9/11 in New York. Through out the trailer there are many jump shots between each Avenger while they are in thought about Ultron and when they are fighting against Ultron. This is a part of the mise - en - scene of a superhero film, having close ups of each important character to try and get the audience to wonder about what they are thinking causing them to become attached are root for the hero. 

The music in the trailer doesn't start till 30 seconds in with one note slowly playing. As it goes on more and more instruments start to come in adding to an eerie atmosphere. The words that are sang are "I've got no strings to hold me down". These are lyrics from the iconic song from one of Disney's classic films Pinocchio. Many of the audience members would recognise the song even though it is distorted and changed to fit in with the distressed and creepy mind of Ultron. This would cause a the audience fear Ultron as he is taking something that would be nostalgic to many members of the audience and it has been changed into a dark statement. At 1:35 the music instantly turns into an intense orchestral piece with the stomp of the big iron man's foot as his is about to fight the hulk. The signifies that form this moment in the unity that was portrayed before hand will no longer be there and from now one their main focus will be how to destroy Ultron. Within each main beat of this piece it shows us a character facing some kind of issue, exposing to us that every part of this film will be an important moment that will affect each individual character in some way.

At the start of the advert we see the avengers together celebrating something being together. Through out the advert we see this unity slowly breaking apart. We see this from them fighting each other and fighting against something on their own; not fighting together against the one enemy. This breaks the common conventions of a superhero film as normally the ideologies behind them is that in order to succeed you have to be a team and even though in the end they come together to defeat Ultron their is this corruption with in the team which is making them dislike each other. The second to last shot in this film is of the iconic shield that Captain America uses smashed which is supposed to be indestructible. This could expose the breaking that will happen to the group throughout the film no matter how people say that their unity is 'unbreakable'. 

The first two times that we see Ultron we see him as a weak broken robot at the start and in the middle. When it is coming close to the end of the trailer we hear Ultrons voice but we do not see him, we only see to destruction that he is causing. The last shot in this trailer is of Ultron being fully developed. This signifies the importance of Ultron that without even being involved with them physically he can still cause destruction to take place. 

The binary opposition that is shown throughout the trailer is humans vs technology. This is shown by the overall battle between the avengers, who are a group of humans, against Ultron, who is artificial intelligence. The message behind this is that even hough we have the power to create things that maybe able to improve our lives may not be the best thing to create. Some things should be left uncreated.

Media Diary Week 6

I am somebody who would be classed as a 'music snob'. I usually prefer music were the artist isn't trying to be like everyone else in order to get into the main charts, were you can hear the realness of the music, the passion that the artist has for their music,and if you listen you can hear how much they have worked to get every part to fit together to great a unique sound with many different things. However, I do enjoy listening to Justin Bieber. 

Justin Bieber is a teen pop star whose songs have always been in the charts since the release of his first song 'Baby' in 2010. His songs are usually targeted to the mainstream as they would want to fit in with what is in the charts so that they would be like everybody else and be able to talk to everybody else about the song. I would not usually listen to his music because i have the ideology that music that if a song is being created for the purpose of making money and becoming famous isn't really music. Music should be created by the true emotions of the artists passion and love for music and if they get somewhere by making the music they wont go off the rails, they would stay true to who they are. therefore, Justin Bieber would not be an artist that i would usually listen to. 

I think that I follow the preferred reading for this text. I do enjoy his music and it makes me want to listen to it again and again as well as singing along as loud as i can and i feel that this is what Bieber wants people to do when his songs get played. It appeals to me because it gives me entertainment and escapism.  This is said in the uses and gratifications model. I get escapism as when i listen to his music as the beat is upbeat my mood follows and also goes upbeat. I also get entertainment in different ways. I get it from the upbeat feel to the music; which would be the preferred reading. However i also get humor from his music. I get humor from listening to some of his older songs and they just make me laugh from the little high pitched voice that he had and to go with this the music videos from the songs also make me laugh because he looks so young and is acting as if he is older. This would be the opposition reading of his songs 

Media Diary - Week 5

Back to the Future

I watched Back to the Future trilogy on the 21st October to celebrate the day that Marty and Doc came to the future. I am already a big fan of this film and watch it on a regular bases for my personal enjoyment. I get a real enjoyment from this film from the acting, the plot, the music and the humor that is used throughout the trilogy. A scene that I get enjoyment from these things is the scene where Marty is playing Johnny B. Goode at the enchantment under the sea dance.
To me Johnny B. Goode is a timeless song with the fast paced beat and the lyrics themselves. However, seeing this being played to a bunch of teenagers in the 50's being really confused when Marty goes on one a bit and a sense of comedy. It adds comedy from the reactions of everybody in the dance and watching Marty go a bit wild on the guitar. 

I would also use this film to get a form a escapism. I would get this because at the beginning of the film you see Marty with the rest of the McFly family and he seem's really unhappy from the way the family is and how his farther, George, runs around for Biff all the time. Eventually he is able to get out of this family by going back in time and changing how his family works therefore he has escaped the family life that he previously had into a new way of family life with a happy mother and farther. This gives me some sort of hope that one day my family life would improve. Obviously not by going back in time but just by letting time solve the problems it's self. As i have a love for 50's and 80's America i use this film to gain information about both of these time period in a way that i can see the slang that was used, the dress sense, the music and just the way that they lived their everyday lives. 

I also feel like i can personally identify myself with Mary McFly because of his fear of rejection. At the beginning of the film we see him auditioning for the chance to perform at his schools dance and after he gets rejected you can see all of his confidence drop. This leads him to feel that he does not want to put himself out there as he is afraid of what the people would say to him about. I can personally identify with this fear as I also want to pursue a music career but i feel too worried about being rejected to put myself out there. 

The 1975 - Love Me music video



The 1975 dropped a music video to their latest song 'Love Me' this week. I find this video very entertaining as I am quite a big fan of this band and feel a connection to all of the member. By watching a video that shows all of the band together being a bit over the top it makes me happy. One party of the video that I find entertaining is during Adam Hann's guitar solo and he is on the main floor and the lead singer Matty Healy is dancing around him. I find this entertaining because it is showing they letting loose and just feeling the music this leads to me being like them, get lost in the music. Not only does this entertain me it also give's me a sense of escape. Escape from the stress of everyday live by going into a trance of the music, the lighting, the shots and the way that the band members are acting themselves. 

I feel like i can personally identify myself to Matty in the video from the way that he gets lost in the music and from his anger towards the way pop culture works that you can see from the lyrics and parts of the video. There are clips in the video where Matty is surrounded by cut outs of people who are seen to be the rulers of pop; this varies from the Harry Styles to Elvis. This shows the views that he has that they are constantly around us are their ego's are built up and it turns to them not thinking about the music only about themselves and the culture that they can preserve. I can identify with this because i have the same view as Matty that artists should just thing about the music. However, this view might have been apposed upon me by Healy. I do identify by the way he acts when he is performing with the strange dance moves and the movement of his body to the music as he is getting lost in it. This is what happens to me when I am listening to music; not only The 1975's music. 

I use this for social interaction as i talk about this video with other fans of the band; talking about their views and sharing mine. Also talking about the band members individually and how they where presented in the video 

Media Diary Week 4

The text that changed my life: Edward Scissorhands


The fist time i watch Edward Scissorhands i was around the age of 7. My dad used to always watch films with me and usually the films where 80s/90s films; these films are still the films that I watch and love today. One day he put on Edward Scissorhands and i was instantly captivated. Everything from the colour scheme, the outfits, the story line and the most influential one to me was the score. This was the first time that I had watched a Tim Burton film so it was nothing like i have ever seen before. It was like i was watching a dream land but with this twist of natural darkness within it. The thought of the man living up on a hill with in a suburban town creating a living man just captured me, I though of it as if it was a bedtime story just as Kim is telling her granddaughter the story at bed time. 

The score that Danny Elfman had produced for this film also added a major attraction to the film to me as it made me listen and pay close attention to the film. This score has had a massive impact on my life; I still listen to it now and get goose bumps and a rush of emotions when listening to it. This had lead me into a deep fascination with film scores, especially film scores by Elfman such as The Corpse Bride, The Nightmare Before Christmas and Beetlejuice. The piece of music which has left a mark on me is 'Death!'. Everything about it add this magical yet emotional effect on  me, the harp add this sense of this heavenly atmosphere. However within the matter of 3 seconds when the strings flat it turns into a darkness with one beat and has this instant effect on me. 

Not only did it start my love for music scores it also started my so called obsession with Tim Burton films and Johnny Depp. I don't know what it is about Tim Burton but his films have always completely grabbed my attention and have left me feeling as if I want to watch more and more of his films. To me Tim Burton is one of my all time favorite directors along with Steven Spielberg because their films have always left an impact on me.

Media Diary Week 3

BADLANDS - Halsey  

In the income/status model the target audience would manly be in people in the people in E. This is because this album, mainly tackles the issues that young teens face in this society. So Halsey is mainly targeting teenagers. For examples the song 'Gasoline' is about finding your self identity within a society that is forcing you to conform into behaving in a particular way so that everything works off the people. This would be and issue that teenagers would face daily about trying to find out who they are and decided themselves what they want to do. 



The ideal consumer of this text would be a female between the ages of 14-19. They would be living with there family and are currently becoming more aware of who they are and creating their own view on how the world is. This is because the songs that Halsey has put into this album tackle issues such as, the music industry, mental health issues, self doubt and many others. This would capture the brains of these teens as they may also be struggling with these issues and by listening to the lyrics and the music representing them, they may be able to relate and feel as if Halsey is helping them in a way that they can come over them.   

The explorer would listen to this album as it challenges the norms of music which are currently in the charts. The lyrics are also quite powerful in a way that they will make the audience think differently about how they see things and how they will feel. Not only does the lyrics break the expectations of what you would expected the actual music creates this atmosphere as if you are in the 'badlands'. Not a lot of music can have the power to put this effect on someone in the music industry in this day in age. For example, the album starts with a song called 'Castle' at the beginning it starts with muffled voices as if you can here what is it going on in her mind. The lyrics also challenge the way that the music industry works. 



The lifestyle category if the target audience could be a drifter or a trendies. This is because in this album there is a mix of different music styles while sticking to one main style at the same time. This would appeal to a drifter as they are not sure about what they want. A trendie may also listen to this because if they start first listening to this new artists with the new sound  in their group other people may start listening as well. This would mean that they would have started a group of people who listen leading them to thank the trendie as they had shown them leading them getting the admiration of the group. This is what the trendie wants.

Examples of Audience Reception

American Horror Story is an ongoing TV where every series is different from the other. The actors stay they same yet the characters that they are playing change as well as the time and the place. So far there is 5 seasons: Murder House, Asylum, Coven, Freak show and Hotel. The target audience for AHS would be an explorer. This is because Ryan Murphy attempts to make you really think about what is going to happen next by having twist in the plot line that wouldn't happen on a mainstream show. It also makes you think about all of the series connect together to form on big story. 

The preferred reading to this text would be to understand deeply the issues that are tackled throughout the 5 series. The viewer will be shocked by the gore that takes place through out the show but they will not be too lighthearted as they would already know what they are getting themselves in for when watching this. The viewer will be hooked by the miseries that are set in place for the plot from the very beginning of the show. AHS celebrates the classic representation of horror by the main characters in the seasons of ghosts, mental institution patients, witches, freaks and vampire's. The viewer would also be interested in these aspects of horror. There is a running theme of how a persons hamartia can effect all of the people around them in a domino effect leading to a tragic end to the person who has this fatal flaw. This would the reader to think about their actions and what they can do to the people around them. The ideologies that this show expresses is that everybody has some sort of evil inside them whether it be on a large scale or small scale; just one little thing can tip this person over the edge leading to them going a little crazy and hurting those around them. AHS tries to make us aware of this by having a character which started of kind and ending up hurting those around them in every season. 

An oppositional reading to this text might be that they think some of the violence and plot lines in the show are over the top and do not need to be in there to help the story line progress. If somebody had a religious background they may get offended by some of the references against holy things; for example in asylum the nuns are shown as being evil and not really caring about the people who are in the asylum. They would understand the reasoning of why they show characters go on a downward scale to evil but would go against it saying that the show does not actually have any reference to the world we live in because of the 'mythical' creatures that are main in every season. Some may say that by putting in all over the gore it takes away from the ideologies that are shown leading to people being disturbed and no longer willing to progress along the season.

Name of text: St Trinians 2: The Legend of Fritton's Gold

Date/Time: 27th September/15:45

Genre: British Comedy 

What is the purpose: The purpose of the text is to challenge the norms of Britain's society by putting the main stereotypes in Britain  by and over doing the way that they behavior. The film producers would have aimed for this film to make people laugh at the over done characters and the shocking/humorous things that the characters say.

Institution producing the text: Ealing Studios, Fragile Films and UK Film Council 

Target audience: The target audience for this text would be people who fit into C1-E in the status income model, teenage girls who are quite confident and are not afraid to show who they are when people around people who are different from them. They would be British because the humor in this film is very British based and in order to find to comedy you would also have to be British. In the Young & Rubican's " 4 C's " they would be an Explorer and a main-streamer. They would be this because even though St Trinians challenges the norms of what is usually seen in a film it give people a form of familiarity to the humor that is used throughout the film. The targeted audience would fit into the lifestyle category of a drifter as they are not sure what they want from the film therefore the institution puts in bits of everything to satisfy the viewers who aren't 100% sure on what they want from the text.   

Your reaction to the text: My reaction to the text is laughter, becoming intrigued in where else the film is going to go and shock with how the girls in the film behave. In film the girls dress up as boys to get into a boys school to receive another clue to the treasure; as a distraction one of the characters gives the boys choir in the school a 'remix'. This makes me react in the ways that I said above. A clip of this scene is below.




Why would people consume the text: People would consume this text because it would give them comical relief and a break from the normal comedy set ups that are out and popular right now.

Could some people react to the text differently? How?: Some people could react to this differently if they don't have the humor that is portrayed in the films. Also, if somebody is easily offended they wouldn't find it as entertaining as others as it does go over the line at times to add the a comedic value.

Robbers Music Video - The 1975 - Review

The 1975 released the music video for their song 'Robbers' from their debut self titled album 'The 1975' on 27th April 2014. Robbers was directed by Tim Mattia with the influence of the Mathew Healy, the lead singer of The 1975. The music video is based on Healy's vision of the video being based on Tony Scott's 1993 film 'True Romance' as he had always envisioned. Mattia made the vision come alive with his talents to create a piece of video art. 

Unlike many music videos that are out in this time, Robbers tells a story that is like a condensed film yet it doesn't make you feel as if you need more to the story. The video also perfectly captures the lyrics to the song and the music so it doesn't completely distract the audience from the music or from the video; you watch this video paying attention to the both which i think is a talented thing to create as usually the music video will drag you away from the actual music. 

One of the aspects of this video that creates an emotional feeling to it is the arrangement of the clips. The video is not set in a chronological order, it shows bits through out their relationship going back and forth between clips. This creates the viewer to become connected to the video as it is as if you are seeing the memories that are flashing back to Matthew as he nearly dying from the gun wound. Also the lighting has a massive affect because it isn't sharp and clean were everything is perfect; it is musty and dank but in a way that is aesthetically pleasing and really fits in to the story behind it, a messy dark hearted love. This adds a sort of realness to the video because it is not over the top and unrealistic, it's an honest video of things that are happening in the world today. 

Overall, i think that the Robbers video is one of the best videos that The 1975 have released so far and I can not wait to see what else they have to release later this year with their new upcoming album.

This picture is affective because of how the main flower is in focus to show its bright colours. The parts of the flower that stand out the most the where they meet at the intersections of the lines, this is done by the rule of thirds.
