The Miner strike of 1984 was a major industrial action to shut down the British Coal industry led by Arthur Scargill. Opposition to the strike was Conservative PM Margaret Thatcher. The strike affected not only industry but lives in which Labour and the miners joined forces to mobilise Thatcher. Straight away the film begins with a montage of real footage showing miners striking against the shut down, the visuals progressively get more violent showing that as the strikes moved along so did the violence. Immediately in the opening of Pride the film foreshadows it is going to take on the subject when Mark is watching the coverage of the strikes on his TV. This represented 1980's Britain as politically corrupt. It was very much seen as the government vs the oppressed.
Another major impact on the 1980's was the introduction of AIDS. We see the real advert campaign which electrified the UK at the time with its bleak message when Joe enters the living room to his family watching the advert on TV, this is another way the film uses foreshadowing as way to show that Joe is a victim of the issue and it is only a matter of time before his family finds out representing how prejudice 1980's Britain was, coming out to an unaccepting family was a big deal and fear for gay people. Conservative MP Geoffrey Dickens saw the AIDs crisis as another opportunity to take a hit at the gay community, it can therefore be seen that 1980s Britain used AIDS to provide an excuse to its underlying issue of the Gay community representing Britain as extremely homophobic; politically and in society.
1980s Britain saw women becoming more capable of shaping and transforming society. Sian is a strong woman who portrays this representation but is held back due to her gender. Before the strike Sian was a young housewife whose life revolved around a clean house and making her children presentable which made her happy but the introduction of mobilising the strike helped her to live up to the new role women had in society in the 1980's. Particularly when it is her who persuades the police officers to release the miners from custody.
The 1980's was an extremely homophobic period. This is emphasised throughout the film with various characters struggle to overcome the fear of the homophobia and coming out. One character in particular is Bromley, we follow his journey as he comes out to his friend, family and even to the audience because as an audience he is the only character we can engage with because we see his back story, this doesn't happen with any other character. Gethin is used as a counteract to Bromley to represent the timeline of two different stages of being gay, Bromley is in the first stages of coming out whereas Gethin is hoping to reconcile with his mother as an audience we assume this will be Bromley over time.
Margaret Thatcher once described 1980's Britan as there being 'No such thing as society' however i think Pride proves her wrong through the use of visuals and themes of unity through close up shots of the hand coming together.
In 1981, cases of a rare lung infection called pneumocystis carinii pneumonia (pcp) were found in five young, previously healthy gay men in Los Angeles. In December 1981, the first cases of pcp were reported in people who inject drugs. By the end of the year, there were 270 reported cases of severe immune deficiency among gay men- 121 of them had died.
In june 1982, a group of cases among gay men in Southern California suggested that the cause of the immune deficiency was sexual and the syndrome was initially called gay-related immune deficiency (or GRID).
Later that month, the disease was reported in haemophiliacs and Haitians leading many to believe it had originated in Haiti.
In September, the CDC used the term 'AIDS' (acquired immune deficiency syndrome) for the first time, describing it as 'a disease at least moderately predictive of a defect in cell mediation immunity, occuring in a person with no known case for diminished resistance to that disease' AIDS cases were also being reported in a number of European countries.
In January, 1983, AIDS was reported among the female partners of men who had the disease suggesting it could be passed on via heterosexual sex. In June, the first reports of AIDS in children hinted that it could be passed via casual contact but this was later ruled out and it was concluded that they had probably directly acquired AIDS from their mothers before, during or shortly after birth.
By the end of the year the number of AIDS cases in the USA had risen to 3,064- of this number 1,292 had died. By the end of 1986, 85 countries had reported 38,401 cases of AIDS to the world health organisation. By region these were; Africa 2,323, America 31,741, Asia 841 and Europe 3,858.
In mid 1980s there was intense media focus on AIDS; a frightening disease with no cure. Conservative MP Geoffrey Dickens was homophobic, he saw the AIDS crisis as another opportunity to take a hit at the gay community. Haemophallics were labelled as victims and gay men and drug users were frequently referred to as 'authors of their own misfortune'. A national public awareness campaign was published by an agency 'TBWA' to create adverts. One advert in particular voiced over by actor John Hurt electrified the UK. Dec 1 was named world AIDS day in 1988.
Who killed biggie and tupac?
in this article it discovers the idea as to whom could have possibly killed both biggie and Tupac, it also is centered around the documentary done by the famous Nick Broomfield, Broomfield is one of the few documentary film-makers whose work approaches 'auteur' status. The documentary shows Broomfield getting hands on in the investigation in many different ways such as interviewing their friends, family, rivals and cops, nick even goes as far as to visit a terrifying jail to interview Suge Knight, the death row executive who we now know is more than likely responsible for the death of Tupac. During this interview Suge warns the viewers not to view rappers as role models, Suge has since been released from jail.
This documentary can be compared to Broomfield's other work, mainly the documentary titled Kurt and Courtney, this documentary also touches upon the music industry and despite their differences the two can ultimately be compared
The genre i chose to do is magazine shows. Magazine shows are regularly scheduled entertainment style news programs consisting of several short segments in which various subjects of current interest are examined, usually in more detail than on a regular newscast. Examples of magazine shows are programmes like; this morning, the one show etc.
I am going to look at the one show as it fits the genre. The one show is a BBC television magazine and chat show programme. Its screened at the same time every week night at 7pm. They film both in the studio and on location or filmed through segments.
This clips shows what the one show is about, it shows a segment on location, in this segment it has an interview with an expert (Dr Bill Frankland) as well as an interview on the sofa with Andrew Lloyd Webber. This shows the one show to be not just a news show but debatably entertaining as well. It shows that show reports on stories that are both lighthearted and tragic. This clip features a mix of in-studio presenting, outside live broadcasting and pre recorded segments
Katie Hopkins
This article is taken from the Daily Mail were they interviewed Katie Hopkins in which she made some very dehumanising and disgusting comments towards migrants. This shows a repeated representation that Hopkins has made for herself 'vile'.
The Encoders of the text are the journalists and editor of the Daily mail. They have represented Katie as an outspoken and flawed human showing that she, like the rest of us, has a sympathetic streak no matter how minute that streak may be. The article describes her as "the outspoken columnist" representing her as opinionated and independent. This column represents Katie as she would represent herself, controversial. This column shows that although Katie regrets some of the things she's said, she still sticks to her word.
The Daily Mail would expect the audience to take an oppositional reading as this headline is controversial and Katie doesn't exactly have a reputation of being liked. The audience would not show empathy to Katie's 'apology' but instead would show anger that she even made those comments in the first place, these comments are not something the majority would be able to relate to.
This one of Katie's infamous tweets taken from her own twitter account. This is just one of the many offensive and disgusting comments she has made on the social media app. Here Katie is representing herself, she is representing herself as being unsympathetic and inconsiderate among many other things. She is living up to the expectations of what people think of her, an overall disgrace of a human being.
The encoder of this tweet is Katie herself. The tweet speaks for itself and shows how much of a monster Katie can really be. However it appears, for some unknown reason, that some people seem to agree with her, they show support by retweeting and/or liking the tweet.
I think that Katie herself would expect people to take an oppositional reading to this view as it is extremely controversial and rather sick. She knows that the tweet will not go down well and thats exactly what she wants, she wants to get people talking and its working.
The masthead is in capital letters and its black representing dominance, this could represent the dominance of the Caitlyn trying to get out of Bruce's inner self. The strap line "call me Caitlyn" is straight to the point, she's not scared to say it and seems confident about it, the strap line is in quotations showing that Caitlyn herself said it and its not just rumours. In the main imagine Caitlyn is looking confident and powerful in both her face and her stance, she looks proud to be a women. She is not shy about it as her outfit choice is rather daring. The reason i think Caitlyn Jenner has been chosen is because she was the talk of the world back in 2015 so people would be more likely to pick it up. This magazine also has the shock factor as it shows a very famous person changed dramatically. The background of the picture is very simple, the walls are slightly reflective and we can see the outline of Caitlyn's body in the walls, i think they've kept the background simple to not draw any attention away from the shock factor of the person.
Starboy- The Weeknd
Narrative
The video is about a singer who wants to kill his old/former persona, perhaps suggesting that he's reinvented himself for his new album, by suffocating himself, getting a new hairstyle and smashing platinum records. He walks round the house with a glow up cross this could represent his religion.
Conventional/unconventional
This video is very unconventional and this is expected out of The Weeknds videos as he is a very creative and original artist so in some way this is conventional to his audience as it is very typical for the Weeknd to do strange music videos. There are some conventional parts such as the scenes were he is miming his lyrics and the fact that the setting is in a fancy mansion, this is typical of music videos.
Visuals
The lighting is rather dark and eery, this fits in with the first scenes of the video were he gets suffocated by his new self. Even though the camera stays still it jumps from scene to scene rather quick.
Dollhouse- Melanie Martinez
Narrative
In this video Melanie Martinez is dressed up as a demented doll singing about a family that look picture perfect on the surface but in reality they couldn't be more dysfunctional. The depiction of a family full of secrets is brutally honest. She shows how they are dressed perfect and their house if perfect so to the girl who owns the dolls they look flawless but it shows you how they're really not. In reality their dads cheating on her mum. It also shows how her mum wears perfect jewellery but don't be fooled as she has a drinking problem. Melanie brings the girl who owns her to her world to show her how troubled
Caroline- Amine
Narrative
The video doesn't have a specific storyline to it, its just these three guys in different settings throughout the video however the reason i picked this video is because of the bloopers, it makes the video more unique. The video mainly consists of the rapper and his two friends miming and dancing to the rap. There is also a weird yet entertaining scene in the middle were there is a bit when the music stops and he starts talking and eating a banana.
Conventional/unconventional
I this video very unconventional for a rapper because a typical rapper video would be in a giant house with a pool and lots of money or girls surrounding them. However in this video they are just simply rapping in different locations such as the pavement on a street, in the car and in a carpark. This is a very simple video but the bloopers at the end make it that little bit more complex and unique as usually rappers wouldn't put this in maybe because they want to keep up with their rebellious persona.
Visuals
I think that the visuals are quite interesting in this video as they have various different animations across there head throughout the video such as question marks or speech bubbles. There is also a lot of low angle shots this is to connote the power the rapper has.
What works/what doesn't
I think that the music video works however they could have made some parts more interesting for example the locations as it gets a bit old after a while however i think the blooper really take it to the next level.
Love Me Again-John Newman
Narrative
The video is about all about two people who see each other in a bar (which John Newman is performing at) and they immediately like the look of each other. All night they can't keep their eyes off each other, even when the girl is dancing. They end up both going into to a room with all snooker tables in and kiss. Some men come in and interrupt them so they run outside into to the street and get hit by a van.
Conventional/unconventional
I think that a lot of this music video is conventional in the sense that its set in a bar and two people meet each other. However i think what makes this video overall unconventional is the morbid twist at the end when they get hit by a van.
Visuals
Its set in a bar which is typical if many music videos. The camera does some slow motion shots of people dancing and also has some scenes of people dancing with a black smokey background, this brings an ferry effect to the music video and prepares the audience for whats to come.
What works/what doesn't
I think in general this music video works, i like the fact that at the end the audience doesn't know whether or not they die or even get hit by the van, this leaves us guessing and wanting more which is what a music video is supposed to do. I think that the dances work as they add to the typical bar scene. Even though the first 3 quarters of the video is typical it works and entertains me.
Im Not The Only One- Sam Smith
Narrative
The story starts with a couple that seem happy and normal however when the husband leaves for work you soon realise that not is all what it seems and he in fact cheating and his wife knows this or at least suspects this but acts like everything is normal when he's around and chooses not to confront him but when he leaves she lets out her true emotions by drinking setting things on fire and crying hysterically. Meanwhile her husband is at a bar cheating on her. Once he comes home she then acts once again like nothings wrong and kisses him when he gets home.
conventional/unconventional
There are both conventional and unconventional elements in this music video. The conventional theme include the cheating husband, which happens in quite a few music videos however they use an unconventional twist which is the fact that she knows but chooses to act normal when he's around and when he's gone she lets it all out, whereas in typical music videos the wife finds out and goes mad at the husband.
Visuals
I think that the setting is typical of this type of music video as to everyone else they are rich and happy but really they're not this shows that money can't buy happiness. There are also many close ups of the wife throughout the video to show the emotion in her eyes.
What works/what doesn't
I think that maybe at the end she should have revealed that she knew or followed him to the bar to make the video more dramatic however i do like the fact that when he comes home she acts like nothing wrong as its almost a little psychotic and unique.
You Belong With Me- Taylor Swift
Narrative
Its about a nerdy boy and a popular girl who live next door to each other and the nerdy girl has a big crush on the nerdy boy and they write messages to each other through the window. The nerdy girl (played by Taylor Swift) tries on different outfits to create a different identity to try and get him to like her, however there is a problem, he already has a girlfriend and she's the popular cheerleader (also played by Swift). nerdy Taylor and the boy start hanging out but this gets ruined by his girlfriend. They then start talking to each other through the window about the school dance to which Swift responds she's not going and reveals she was going to tell him she loved him with a note. She ends up going to the dance and has a complete transformation and no longer looks nerdy, the boy is clearly stunned by her new look. She then proceeds to pull out the note she was going to give to him and he has the same note in his pocket that also say i love you, so it turns out he liked her all along.
Convention/unconventional
This music video has a very typical storyline as its about the nerdy girl who has a transformation and gets her dream boy. Even though a lot of this video is typical there are some parts which haven't been seen before, such as the note writing through the window and Swift playing two characters who are both enemies.
Visuals
The visuals in this video are rather simple however there are some parts which even though are simplistic are also effective, for example the part when she's trying on all the different the camera is solely focused on her reflection in the mirror or the scene when she dancing and we see her from the boys pov. The music video is set in typical settings such as her bedroom and at a school dance.
What works/what doesn't
I think the music video works but its a very typical theme in music videos and films. I do however find some parts rather cringey and confusing such as why does he have that note in his pocket even though she said she's not going to the dance. Other than that i find it enjoyable to watch and was happy for the characters at the end. It may not be the most original idea but its entertaining and does work!
Hot n Cold- Katy Perry
Narrative
The video is about a young couple on their wedding day, at the alter the bride (Katy Perry) says "i do" the groom however seems to be having second thoughts and proceeds to run out of the venue and out into the street. Katy them runs after him in a rather psychotic way and corners him in various different locations, joined by her bridesmaids they all try to catch him, even though he clearly doesn't want to be followed.
Conventional/unconventional
There are both conventional and unconventional parts to this music video. For example the young good looking couple are typical of most music videos, also there are scenes when Katy is on a stage miming the lyrics to her song and choreographed dance scenes, this once again is very typical of music videos. However a lot of this music video is very unconventional such as the runaway groom, its usually a runaway bride. As well as the runaway groom the video is unique in the sense that Katy plays a very psychotic bride who is stalking her groom and has a choreographed dance with her bridesmaids and somewhere along the line brings a zebra and male bridesmaid into the mix, this is very original idea and makes for an interesting video.
Visuals
During the wedding scene the camera does a lot of close ups on the grooms, brides, bridesmaids and guests face to show the shock and emotions thats going on when the groom goes silent, this makes the audience watching feel tense and awkward. There is a scene at the end were the groom is on the floor and the camera does a high angle shot of him, this makes him look weak and not in control. The colours start off very bright when their at the wedding venue but the colours get progressively darker when she's on the stage after the runaway happens. In the stage scene the camera does some very extreme close ups on her items of clothing which appear to really zoom in on the brand it is, which is diesel, this is presumably the brand she is sponsored by.
What works/what doesn't
I think this video works as its so original and unique yet cheesy at the same time. I think some bits works almost too well that it makes me cringe, for example the part were she there is just magically a bike for her to follow him on or the weird crowd surf. Apart from the cheesy bits i think that this music video is a really good idea and works well.
She will be loved- Maroon 5
Narrative
The music video is a sad love story. Its about a women who's got a rich, deadbeat, abusive husband, their relationship is juxtaposed with that of their daughters relationship who's with a young man, who is played by Adam Levine. The young man is seen to constantly obsess over his girlfriends mother. He understands that although she is constantly rejected by her husband is not just an emotional wreck but is beautiful and attractive, maybe even more attractive than his own girlfriend. It shows how the young man and his girlfriends mother start and affair, which at the end is found out by the daughter who is obviously shocked.
Conventional/unconventional
I think that there are both conventional and unconventional themes running throughout. The video contains a typical affair love story however its unique in the way that the women he is having an affair with is his girlfriends mother. This is very unconventional. Also apart from the affair the mothers life is complicated with her abusive relationship. A conventional theme of this music video is the part when he is playing his song at a bar and miming the lyrics, this happens in many music videos.
Visuals
The visuals are very simple and camera stays still throughout the video. However at the end of the video there is an interesting visual, it shows an extreme close up on the young mans eyes, his girlfriends eyes and his girlfriends mothers eyes after they had been caught cheating, it shows the raw emotion in each of their eyes, it shows the shock in all of their eyes and it shows the hurt in the daughters eyes. In my opinion this visual was clever as it could help the audience relate any one of the three in the situation...maybe not that exact one but similar ones!
What works/what doesn't
i think the story line can be quite confusing and it took me a while to realise that it was his girlfriends mother that he was having an affair with, the story does explain it very well. However i think once you've got the grasp of the storyline then it does work very well and i like the fact at the end that we are left on a cliffhanger as it leaves the audience to make up their own ending to the story.
Stan-Eminem
Narrative
The story is about a boy named Stan who writes letters to Eminem, who he has an obsession with, the lyrics are supposed to be the words he's writing on the letter. He wants to be like him and dyes his hair like Eminem and even has a room full of posters with Eminem's face on them, these letters are very creepy. This causes arguments between him and his girlfriend, who is pregnant with his child, as he's acting differently. Each letter he writes to Eminem he gets more and more angry as he has yet to get a reply from him. One night his girlfriend finds the creepy room Stan has dedicated to Eminem, she finds pictures were he has covered her face and replaced them with Eminem's. He finds his pregnant girlfriend in the room and proceeds to shove her. It then shows him in a car and it is brought to the audience attention that he has killed his girlfriend and is going to throw her off a bridge which he tells Eminem in a message he records for him. The bridge is out of bounds and under construction however he misses the sign as he is still recording his message and drives over the bridge, it then shows two people at Stan's grave. It then shows Eminem finally writing back to Stan, clearly unaware of his death, he then sees his name and realises that he seen his name on the news and realises that Stan is dead.
Conventional/unconventional
In my opinion this music video is very unconventional, its nothing like i have every seen before. Its very clever and unique! I think the most unconventional part is the fact that the rap lyrics are the words of the letters being sent. Even though its unique its very twisted, so twisted that it would
be hard for any other music video to try and replicate it. I think that the whole music video is entered around a fan of his is also very original.
Visuals
i think that the video relies more on the storyline than the visuals. However thats not to say that the visuals are by any means rubbish. The scene when Stan crashes is very interesting as just before the crash it shows you the pov of Stan going over the bridge, this makes the audience relate to what Stan's going through and gets the audience more involved. It also shows the car under the water. The camera shows many close up shots of Stan, i think they have done this to show the audience what Stan's feeling, we see the anger and frustration in Stan's face when he doesn't get a reply from his idol. The colours in this video are very dark and eery, this is to match the dark and eery storyline!
What works/what doesn't
i think this video is very well thought out and it all fits together well and works. The story isn't particularly confusing and is quite easy to follow along. If i has to pick one thing that i think didn't work would be they need to explain more who the little boy is at the end, i understand that he's supposed to be Stan 2.0 but i don't quite get who he is. Other than that i think that this video is very clever and worked well.
Hold Up- Beyonce
Narrative
The story is about a man that cheated on her and she is trashing the streets and smashing shops in anger. the music video starts off with her underwater and i dialogue is being spoken by her (Beyonce) she is talking about how she thinks she's been cheated on, she then proceeds to come onto the street and grabs a bat, this is the point were she starts smashing things up like shop windows and cars, however she is smiling a lot in the music video which makes it seem rather twisted. She ends the music video by smashing the camera.
Conventional/unconventional
I think this music video has themes of both conventional and unconventional. For example the cheating part is very conventional and has happened in many music videos over the years. Another conventional part of the music video is the fact that she's smashing things up, this often happens when people find out there partners cheated whether that be in music videos or films as they're angry and want to release all that anger. However there are unconventional parts also in the music video such as the first minute of the music video which consists of her doing strange things under water while a rather creepy dialogue is spoken, this is very unique and never happens. Another unconventional part is the fact that she is seemingly happy throughout the process. There is a juxtaposition as she has been cheated on and is smashing things up but yet she seems to almost find it funny.
Visuals
The first scene is set underwater and the camera shows many close up shots of Beyonce's face to show the emotion in her face after finding out she'd been cheated on. There are also many long shots, this is to make the audience feel isolated and trapped. As the the person speaking speaks faster the scenes jump are rapidly to keep up with the pace of the dialogue. When she exits the room full of water the camera does a low angle show of her opening the doors, this makes Beyonce look strong and in charge. There are many medium shots of Beyonce walking down the street. There is also the pov of a person who lives in one of the houses right were this is all taking place, we see them look at Beyonce from the window. There are quite a few slow motion scenes, this happens when she smashes something like a window. At one point in the music video there is an explosion behind her. At the end of the music video it shows Beyonce hitting the camera lens with a bat, this engages the audience as its almost likes she's hitting us with the bat.
What works/what doesn't
I think that most of this music video works, its unique an the start is rather creepy as its almost like she's having an exorcism and i think the story works, the fact that she'd been cheated on and was very angry. However the one thing i think didn't work was the explosion, it was very unrealistic, i know a lot of the music video is but those bits are unique the explosions, in my opinion is irrelevant and it disappears within a couple of seconds so i think that it could have been left out and was unnecessary.
Treat you better- Shawn Mendes
Narrative
The story is about a girl and a boy who are in a relationship however it's not a typical love story as the relationship is rather abusive. It shows multiple brawls between the two including the boy shoving the girl and waiting in the background it another boy (Shawn Mendes) who wants to treat her better. There are many close up shots on the girl, this is to show the emotion in her eyes. The tension builds in the music video as it shows the boy getting in a fight with another boy who we know nothing about and haven't been introduced too. It then shows the girl trying to stop the fight and getting hurt in the process. Throughout all of the abusive situations it shows how Mendes wants to be with her. At the end of the video it displays the number for the national domestic violence hotline.
Conventional/Unconventional
I think that the music video conveys both convention and unconventional themes as it has a typical love triangle story, with a boy wanting to be with a girl but she's already in a relationship however there are unconventional themes to the music video, for example the relationship is abusive which you don't see in many music videos, I think this is a good idea as it brings to light the abuse that can go on in relationships and gives people a chance to get help by giving them someone to talk to and putting a phone number as the end for people to call and not feel alone. Another unconventional part of the music video is that the good boy doesn't get the girl instead she stays with the abusive one whereas if it was conventional the good boy would have ended up with the girl.
Visuals
The mise-en-scene shows 3 people's lives and the camera quickly jumps from person to person. There are also a lot of close up shots of the girls eyes. When the boy is having a fight there a long angle shows, this it to show the audience everything that is going on.
What works/ what doesn't
I think what works with the music video is the abusive relationship, I think they show it in an emotional yet respectful way. I think what doesn't work, in my opinion, is the fact that there is no particular ending. We don't find out if she ends up breaking up with the boy, on the other hand you could say this does work as it leaves it up to the audience to assume what's happened and they can make up there own ending. This makes the music video more intimate with the audience and makes them feel more involved.
The Poltergeist Trailer
This trailer shows that it has elements that are typical to pretty much any horror film, this includes iconographies such as the eery music, the dark setting and the use of the supernatural. Another typical iconography is the characters move into a new house and this is when things start to go wrong, this again happens in a lot of the classic horror films.
The Boy Trailer
The trailer starts out by introducing you to the babysitter and the parents of the boy, they state that they have had a number of potential nannies but don't mention why they have never worked out. It soon becomes clear why the other nannies didn't continue their job after we are introduced to the 'child' named Brahms who is actually a doll. At first the babysitter laughs and thinks that they must be joking but it soon becomes apparent that they are in fact not joking and think that this boy is actually real. it soon becomes clear that the genre is horror this is based from the iconographies that are shown in the first few seconds of the trailer the main one being the creepy life like doll along with the creepy music and scary old mansion which are a common theme in many horror films out there. Its not just the house that is typical but also the dark and eery surroundings this also fits in with the horror genre. The father of Brahms states that he is not like other children, this gives the film a sense of mystery and fits in with the genre of horror as there is always an deranged or weird character and Brahms is that character. The babysitter is then given a list of rules to follow and before the parents leave they tell the babysitter 'be good to him and he'll be good to you' this is a somewhat juxtaposition as its a doll so how can it be good to you, it can't even speak. It appears later in the trailer that Greta, the babysitter, has ignored the rules and is instead doing the opposite of what they asked, in the background of the trailer creepy music is playing, this is non-diagetic. As soon as she stops listening to the rules things start to go wrong, fast! The doll starts dissappearing and appearing in a different part of the house, creepy laughter can also be heard throughout the house. greta then shows the grocery man what has been happening with Brahms and he can't believe it. Greta then asks the grocery man to tell her about the real Brahms, he proceeds to tell her that he was a strange boy and he implies that he killed a girl and the police found her body in the woods but by the time the police went to check the place it was up in flames, this brings an even creepier feel to the film. He then tells Greta that Brahms didn't make out of the fire alive... meaning he's dead
Lines of appeal
1. The advert i have chosen that uses humour as its main persuasive device is The Haribo Advert. The reason i have chosen this advert is simply because of the very childish yet amusing and lighthearted humour that the advert focuses on. Its a very clever advert in which it uses a handful of adults who speak in a baby voice, the scenarios that they are in are also very childish and they are often about very silly and stupid things, such as silly arguments or breakups. The connection this advert has with the actual product is that its tagline is 'kids and grownups love them so, the happy world of Haribo' suggesting that there is a child inside everybody. I think the target audience could potentially be children due to the type of humour however the tagline suggests that this isn't just for children but the product is aimed at a variety of people such as working class or people at lowest level of income. The reason i have chosen working class and people at lowest level income is because the humour is so silly that middle class would tend to not find it funny, its very simple and would not really be found all that amusing by the more prestigious audience members it would more than likely be looked down upon by them. I think that its largely targeted at the trendies as the advert could be seen as mainstream, due to the simple humour and the popularity the product itself has and if its popular then its going to have people talking about so the trendies would watch it to be admired by their peers and have something to talk about, which is what the trendies long for in life.
2. The slogan i have chosen is the red bull slogan 'it gives you wiiings'. i chose this slogan because it is catchy and very simple to remember, its only four short words. The word 'it' tells you that its talking about the product. 'Gives' suggests that it doesn't make you work for the energy boost but that it hands it to you on a plate. The word 'you' makes you feel very involved and like they are singling you out and are only taking to you, it makes it seems intimate and makes you more likely to buy the product as you feel as though they're telling you specifically that it will give you wings. The word 'wiiings' suggests that the energy boost the drink gives you is so great that you can fly it also suggests that it will make you feel free like a bird, the three I's in wings suggests that the person writing it had drank the drink and had the energy boost and they wrote three I's to emphasis the boost it really will give you. The reason i think this slogan has become so popular and is so memorable is due to how it speaks to the audience and makes the audience feel as though them and only them are being targeted, it could also be due to the simplicity of the slogan.
3. The advert i have chosen is the wateraid- give water give life. I have chosen this advert because it truly is shocking and disturbing, in the first few seconds of the advert the audience is warned that the advert is disturbing this shows us that it is going to be shocking even before it started. It then goes on to show us a few distressing clips of clearly malnourished children and tell us that over 2000 children will die today by drinking dirty water, this shocks us because it is happening in the world right this second so it relates to us and makes us feel like we need to get involved and help. The advert shows us small children drinking dirty water and states how they have no choice but to drink it, it makes us want to donate and give them a choice. The advert then goes on to say 'if you want to stop one more child dying from dirty water then pick up your phones and donate' this is a shocking statement as it makes it feel as though the voice over in the advert is talking to you personally and if you don't pick up the phone and donate then it makes you feel as if you were responsible for a child's death. The advert shocks you so much that it makes you feel as though its almost a crime not to donate and if you didn't then it would be stuck in your mind and make you feel guilty, it would make you feel like a monster if you didn't donate.
4. The advert i have chosen which stereotypes is the clorox 2 advert. In this advert we see a group of women in a research facility proving that clorox is the best detergent for removing stains. This advert suggests that washing clothes is women's work as the only gender invited to test out the detergent is women, the women also look really happy and excited about being at the facility, this suggests that not only is it a women's job to wash clothes but also that they should be happy to do so. The advert reinforces the stereotypical age old idea that women should stay at home cleaning. As well as this most of the scientists in this video are men suggesting that men should do the important jobs whilst women stay at home doing the house work this once again proves how stereotypical this advert is and quite frankly its offensive and insulting to the women watching.
5.The advert i chose for intertextuality is the sky christmas advert as it uses many familiar faces and shows many films scenes such as; Harry Potter, Mary Poppins and the Kings speech. The advert has very cleverly picked out films from different decades so every age will recognise at least one of the films, they've also picked some of the most popular and timeless films around this could give people a sense of nostalgia. Another way the advert shows intertextuality is that it mixes fiction with reality and shows a regular man trying to get home to give his child her presents at christmas getting stuck in all of these film scenes, this would make it more enjoyable for the audience as not only does it show something for everyone but it also makes it interesting when it mixes fiction and reality.
6. The pepsi advert starring Britney Spears, Beyonce, Pink and Enrique Iglesias is the advert i have chosen to analyse. The reason i have chosen is this advert is due to the stars starring in the advert, they are all very known household names and they are all seen as role models amongst a lot of people. Due to their popularity they will appeal to an extremely wide audience all around the world and it shows if these stars are drinking pepsi then why aren't you? The advert uses three very strong independent women which represents girl power, this would appeal to many women but they haven't left the men out as they have Enrique Iglesias who is seen as a sex symbol and is very admired by both genders. They also sing a very well-known song in the advert 'we will rock you' this could bring people a sense of nostalgia and this would also appeal to a large audience, young or old.
7. For reward and punishment i chose the advert Dentastix. I chose this advert due to the use of dogs, so many people love dogs and one or two of their own so therefore this advert will pull at the heartstrings as no one can resist a cute dog this would grab the attention of the audience. The advert tells you how 4 out of 5 dogs over the age of three have gum disease but you can fix that by giving your dog dentastix. If you give your dog dentastix them you are rewarding them by helping them get healthy teeth but you are also rewarding yourself as you don't have to pay the vet bill when your dog gets rotting teeth however if you don't buy your dog detnastix then you are punishing them as you are the cause for their rotting teeth and putting them in pain. The advert also shows clip of a dog telling you how you should feed them dentastix and they will love you for it. It makes you feel as though you must by it so then you don't feel guilty for causing your dog teeth problems, also the use of cute talking dogs in the advert makes you want to buy them more. In the advert it shows a dog eating dentastix showing that not only does it clean their teeth but they also enjoy it at the same time, so you are rewarding them more by giving them both a treat they love and something that will make them healthy. It makes you feel as though if you don't give them it then you are depriving your dog of happiness.
