Media Representations of Donald Trump

Media representations of Donald Trump

This image is taken from the popular American magazine TIME magazine. It is the December 19th edition which is the person of the year special edition. The main image of the magazine cover is of Donald Trump who at the time was the president elect of the United States of America. The image makes Trump look powerful and independent as he is sitting alone. this also makes him look confident as he is sitting up straight and the way he is sitting. It is almost as if he is looking down at us as he feels he is above us, he is looking over his shoulder. However, the fact that he is alone and partnered with the medium long shot makes it look like he is isolated more than independent and he is looking over his shoulder could represent paranoia. Trump is also wearing a dark blue suit and the rest of the image is all dull and drab colours. This gives the magazine an eerie feel, the publishers of the magazine may of done this as it is a dark period of history. This dark period of history is the time of Donald Trump being elected as the president of the united states )or as tie magazine has called it "the divided states").  Many people including a large number of celebrities have been against Donald Trump as they are not a fan of him as a person or a president. He has been labelled misogynistic due to some of his extremely controversial speeches. He has also promised to build a wall along the America-Mexico border but wants the Mexican government to provide the funds for it. He has also been branded a racist, he seems to be especially racist towards Mexicans and Muslims, since he has become the president that racism has been put into actions. He has recently blacklisted 9 mainly Muslim countries from the united states.
The masthead has also been positioned in a certain way which the magazine has seemed to use to put forward their views of Donald Trump. The letter M is placed in a positioned right above his head, this makes it almost look like devils horns and that is reinforced by the font being the colour red. The colour red has connotations of evil and of danger. This may of been chosen as they think that Donald Trump is a danger to the United States.

Magazine Cover analysis

Masthead

The masthead is in a bold font and it is also in capitals ,this boldness gives it a very bland and simple look. This is representative to how this magazine is meant to be. The magazine is meant to be easy to read and doesn't take any effort to do so which why this masthead is so fitting, you are not looking for any deeper meanings/connotations in this. The colour of it is red and white which stereotypically a boys colour which is what the magazines target audience is, young boys. It is also the colours of some of the most popular and most successful clubs in football such as Bayern Munich, Liverpool and Manchester United.

Main image:

The main image is a picture of the now former Liverpool striker , Luis Suarez. During the 2013-14 season he was the top goalscorer in the premier league and was also the best player in the league at that moment in time, he was also considered the best striker in Europe. This is why they decided to use this player, he is a very well known and for some children will be an inspiration to them so if they see him they will want to buy the magazine. behind the main image they put a blue background, he is in a red kit which will make him stand out more from the rest of the images.

Layout and Mise-en-scene

The layout of the cover is quite congested with a lot of pictures and bold text which makes it quite lively as it is partnered with a lot of bright colours, this would make it quite appealing to a young boy as it is very eye-catching.

Water aid advert

Technical codes

The use of the voice over in the advert is very powerful, it gives us a warning before the advert saying that "you might find this film shocking" which wants to make the audience intrigued as to why they might find the film shocking and makes them watch on.
The voice over is very dull and he speaks quite slowly which fits in to the advert as he is being blunt about what is happening and is not trying to sugarcoat it in any way. He also uses statistics as a persuasive technique to try and get the audience to donate. Some of the statistics could even be counted as shock tactics due to the high numbers of children dying and the severity of the dirty water issue in Africa.

The background music is also very dull which

I shouldnt be here ad

Ideology

The adverts main ideology is that these people wouldn't be alive without the support of cancer research and the support of the audience who are funding cancer research. It is an advert which is posting a positive message (that people are being saved) rather than a negative one, apart from the last person.

Characters/ visual style

The adverts uses characters with a variety of ages and both genders, showing that this can happen to anyone. They also uses multiple, but basic, settings. A restaurant, hospital and park are used which makes the people seem familiar and relatable. They advert uses mainly close ups and medium close ups, the characters talk into the camera making the advert seem more direct and aimed towards the audience.  This also makes the audience feel a connection with the characters.

lines of appeal

The advert uses an enigma code at the beginning as it makes the viewrs start to ask questions as to why these people shouldn't be here? What have they done wrong? etc... However, this then makes us feel guilty as we anticipate that they have done something wrong when it really because we are in danger of dying.

What works

The enigma code to make us feel guilty is very effective along with the simple message of "I shouldn't be here"

Alzheimers ad

Ideology

The main ideology of the advert is

Greenpeace Ad

The advert is trying to put out the ideology that cars are one of the most harmful things there is to the planet at the moment due to the emissions which they give off. It is basically trying to say that anybody who is using a car is a bad person due to them still driving even though they know that it is damaging to the environment.

Visual/ characters

At first all we see is a normal man who has came in to work and is getting looks of disappointment and disgust from everybody that he walks past, a woman even spits in his drink before giving it to him. Also people swear at him when he walks past. This makes the audience question whether the man has done something bad and makes them want to find out what it is. When the audience finally do find out what the man has done it can be surprising as he is only driving his car, however this does make the audience think about the damage they are causing to the environment and make them think twice about whether it necessary to drive there car to wherever they are going.

Lines of appeal

The advert uses a slight bit of humour when all the people are swearing behind the persons back, this is humorous as people can relate to this and some could probably admit to doing this themselves. Also there is use of reward and punishment, if you use a car then expect abuse from people and if you don't then don't expect abuse.

What works

The advert draws the audience in very well by making it so they want to see why this man is getting these looks of people and why he is getting swore at. This makes for a suprising reaction when they find out what it is about but it also makes them think. Also the use of reward and punishment is quite effective.

Make poverty history Ad

Ideology

The ideology of the advert is simply to try and get rid of poverty in the world.

Visual style/characters

The advert is very bland and simple, it is in black and white but uses a group of popular and recognisable celebrities. It is very simple as they are just clicking their fingers which is quite intriguing, this is soon met with the harsh reality that each time they click a child is dying of poverty as we are told by the voice over. This is a use of shock tactics as it is very unexpected. There is no range in shot types which makes the advert very bland.

What works

The blandness of the advert is surprisingly quite affective, it is suggesting that there is no way to sugar-coat the fact that people are dying of poverty for "no reason" as it can be stopped. this is quite shocking to the audience which makes it really affective.

Time to change Ad

Time to change Ad

Ideology

An ideology of the advert is that people with mental health issues are stereotyped that they are intending to mean harm to others, this is shown by when one of the characters says "I'm sorry if you were expecting some lunatic with a knife", this is affective as it makes the audience who were expecting this almost feel as if they are in the wrong. This shows that mental health is shown in many different ways also.

Visual style/characters

The advert begins with dark flickering and the sharp harsh sounds, this makes the audience expect a advert for a horror film or something else to do with the horror genre. However, when we see the man this can surprise the audience , catch them off guard almost, and intrigue them as they want to find out what the advert is all about. The calm man really juxtaposes the start of the advert which makes it quite unique and makes it a effective, memorable advert.

Lines of appeal

The advert uses juxtapositioning and binary oppositions which can make the advert quite confusing at times. It also uses stereotyping.

What works

The juxtaposition between the horror film like beginning and the calm man after it is really effective as it unexpected. It also makes the audience pay more attention at the start as they are intrigued by what is going to happen, then when the man appears on screen the audience will already been drawn in so they will listen to what the person has to say which will raise awareness.

British heart foundation advert

Advert : British Heart Foundation

Ideology

The advert has been made to show what happens or what can happen during the course of a heart attack. It also educates people about the dangers and severities of heart attacks.

Visual style/ characters

The advert is completely in first person, it is made to make it seem as if you are the person having the heart attack and the person in the advert is talking to you. It is done to almost interact with the audience but it instructs you at the same time, the uniqueness of the advert makes it very memorable which is needed for a good advert. The use of the low angle shot when looking at the man is effective as it makes the audience feel inferior which is what can happen when experiencing a heart attack, you are helpless. The use of camera movement in the advert is used to futher express the pain and discomfort a heart attack can cause, the camera starts shaking side to side and goes blurry which is uncomfortable to watch.

What works

The advert is very effective, it makes the audience experience the stages and the pain of a heart attack.it is also very educational as it tells you how to spot a heart attack and how to react which is useful. the use of first person is also very affective as it makes the audience feel as if they arev having a heart attack which makes the advert very effective.

Amnesty Waterboarding Ad Research

Charity : Amnesty

Ideology: The ideology behind the advert is to raise awareness about different forms of torture, in this advert it specifically focuses on waterboarding. It wants to give the audience an insight into what waterboarding is like by having a person getting it done to them and the true horror of the torture method.

Characters/ Visual style

We only see 4 characters in the advert and they only are in shot for a minority of the advert, there are 3 people who are all black and wearing white gloves. We don't see the faces of these people which gives the advert a much scarier feel. This could also be suggesting that the torturers personality is very dark because of what they are doing to another human being is not ethical in the slightest.
The advert has low key lighting throughout it which matches with what is happening in the advert, this lighting has been chosen to show the darkness of torture. for the first minute all we see is a close up of water falling which would leave the audience confused as to what is going to happen.
There is background music from the start, the music makes the audience feel as if something bad is happening before we actually we see what is happening because it is quite intense.

Lines of appeal

There is shock tactics used in this advert, it is the person being waterboarded. This is shocking as you wouldn't normally expect to see somebody getting tortured on a TV advert, you don't even normally see any form of violence on a advert which is what makes this advert so shocking, and will make people remember the advert more than an advert. This advert is not targetted at a specific audience which allows it to rase awareness to masses of people

What works
the shock tactics used in the advert are very affective, it makes the advert remain in the heads of the people who watch it for a long time which will raise awareness over time.

NSPCC Open your eyes ad

Charity ad research – Open your eyes NSPCC advert

Ideology
The ideology of the advert is to try and raise awareness among the people of child abuse. It is attempting to make people more aware of child abuse and how it is very real and could be happening right in front of them. You just have to open your eyes more to see it.

Visual
The advert is made to look very realistic as it tries to mirror what child abuse is like. The ad features a small child, this almost instantly grabs the attention of people who have children as they feel a connection and it also will generate an emotional response which will make people pay more attention and make the advert more memorable. The advert features very low key lighting which gives the advert a very dark and sad feel, this is partnered with the CCTV filter which is used to watch the baby. This shows that not much attention is paid to the baby as it is alone which makes the audience feel for the baby and become more attached to it, making the advert more memorable. It also shows an extreme close up of one of the children, this is used to show the feelings of the baby but it also positions the audience closer to the child which makes the audience feel for him more.

Lines of appeal
There is a degree of shock tactics which are used in the advert, it is that the babies are isolated which to a normal person is quite shocking on how a child/baby can be given that little attention.

What works
The advert tries to catch the attention of the audience by using the harsh reality of a child, this advert targets the audience of anyone who has a child very well and will raise awareness about child abuse. The use of the low key lighting is also very affective as it creates a very dark feel to the advert. The use of a CCTV affect Is also very affective as it futherly emphasises the isolation to children who are suffering abuse which makes the advert more realistic.

Use of humor as a persuasive device in advertisement
Image result for evian advert babies

An advert which uses humour in advertisement as a persuasive device is the Evian water bottle advert, this advert is of babies rollerskating in and out of water bottles and performing tricks such as going backwards while still on the roller skates. This is humourous as it is something that you would never expect to see a baby doing. Babies have connotations of simple as they are only young, so seeing them doing such a complex activity which requires a high level of concentration is entertaining to watch. This advert also sticks in your head as it is very unique also.
I think this advert would appeal to the mainstreamer as Evian sells water which is essential for every human to live, so to make something (water adverts) which is normally so boring and repetitive actually funny is quite refreshing.

use of slogans in advertisement

Image result for every little helps

The slogan for Tesco is "every little helps", this slogan is so well known as Tesco is one of the biggest supermarket chains in the world. Tesco is known to be for the people so every little helps has multiple meanings, one meaning is that they could be helping out the people by putting the prices of their items on sale which could help out people who maybe could not afford to buy a lot of food every week. This slogan is also only short being just 3 words which is easy to remember however there is also a persuasive technique used which is the trick of three. this technique may have been used on the slogan to try and bring more customers in to the stores.

the use of shock tactics

Image result for cigarette packet
One thing that uses shock tactics is cigarette packets, the back of cigarette packets are normally used to try and persuade smokers to stop smoking by showing the damage that smoking can cause. It normally shows a picture of damaged lungs compared to healthy lungs or the affect it can have on your teeth. They use this to make people afraid of smoking as they do not want to end up like with there teeth or there lungs looking like the photos on the packets.

use of stereotypes

Image result for hp manwich ad
Companies use stereotypes also to appeal to a certain audience, for example, in 2012 HP uses male stereotyping to advertise there sauce, they used the line of making "a sandwich a manwich". They used this to try and appeal to a male audience rather than a mixed gender audience which can be interpreted that that brown sauce is not for females which makes this sexist also.

Intertextuality in advertising

Image result for intertextuality examples in advertising

Intertextuality is used in advertising, one example of this is a Toys R Us advert where they are advertising some of there toys. they are advertising two teddies and a boat, however they use the famous shot from titanic to advertise it, this makes the audience familiarize with the text and make the advert more memerable.it is made more memerable as Titanic is one of the most watched films of all time and people would be able to recognize this shot right away.

Elite persons in advertising

Image result for bale adidas advert
Adidas are one of the companies which uses elite persons in there adverts the most, this is to inspire people as most of the people who they sponsor are elite athletes who are role models to a lot of people. they mainly use footballers to advertise there products as football is the most popular sport in the world which makes them very well known and easily recognizable by many. Gareth Bale is one of the best footballers in the world today, he is the captain of his country (Wales) which makes him extremely popular among the Welsh people. he also plays for Real Madrid who are the most successful club in football, they are also from spain which will also appeal to the people of Spain too.

Media Diary Week 3

Fifa (created by Electronic arts sports) is a realistic football game, every year this giant franchise finds ways to improve whether its tweaking with the graphics, the gameplay or adding new features and this years game Fifa 17 is no different.
Here is the advert trailer for fifa 17:

The game is not targeted towards any audience in particular as is shown by the age restriction of the game only being 3 years old. The reason this game is not targeted toward anyone for advertisement is because it doesn't need to, football being the most popular sport in the world has done the advertisement for them. With technology being so involved in todays society it is now used for children to play virtual sports just as much if not more than actual sports.

Fifa is the most popular football game there is out there, it overshadows games like Pro Evolution Soccer which only has a miniscule audience compared to the vast scale of fifa players. This is why I believe that the category that people who play fifa fall into is the mainstream category. This allows them to be able to discuss the game with other mainstreamers who also followed the crowd by buying this game. I believe that the lifestyle categories for people who play fifa would be groupies and trendies to a  certain extent. Groupies would be the most suitable lifestyle category as people who play the game want to be accepted by others so they play a popular game as they know that they will be able to talk about the game with others and be accepted. It can also fit trendies too as they will buy whatever is popular just to be popular and fifa is exactly that, it is arguably the most popular game that there is out there today.

Media Diary entry week 2

GTA V Review

You have probably heard of the Grand Theft Auto franchise before even if you don't play video games. Grand Theft Auto ,or GTA for short, is the biggest selling game franchise there is. Their most recent game GTA V was the biggest selling game there has ever been selling over £45m copies.

The game is a free roam game which means that you can do whatever you want and whenever you want to due to the wide range of activities available that will surely pass some time. However you are able to complete the game because there is a story to the game. It is a story that is riddled with hundreds of missions and side missions which will definitely keep you playing for hours on end wanting to know what happens next. The general plot of the story mode is that there is 3 guys that go around and rob things however they hit a few obstacles on their way.

The game also has a multiplayer aspect to the game where you can play Grand Theft Auto with your friends. You have so many options to do when playing online, such as: you can drive around with your friends and go to war with others in the game to become the most dominant and feared group there is in the game lobby. You can also play a wide range of missions which you will be having fun with and earning money for your very own customizable GTA online character. Fancy yourself as a good driver? GTA has that covered for you too with a large selection of races which include jumps and tight corners which would for definite give you thrills. If you would rather take part in some recreational sport then there is tennis, darts and golf for you and your friends to take part in. GTA V online has it all.

You will be unique to everybody else there is online, due to the amount of different cars and customizations these come with nobody will be driving the same car as you. The wide range of clothing will also make you stand out in the croud (or blend in if you want it to). Also the amount of houses which you can purchase will make you completely different to everyone else online.

The map in which GTA V is in is by far the biggest we have ever seen, there is a giant city where most of the action takes place. Most of the players will be found here as they will all be looking for action too. However if you want to have fun on some rollercoasters then head down to the pier where there is a Ferris wheel also where you can become part of the cities skyline. If this is all to much for you and you want to be in a quieter location then head up north to Blaine County and take a drive through the desert. You could even put some offroad wheels on your car and drive across the miles of sand dunes and sandy plains. Or even climb a mountain if you feel like it.

Overall is would say that GTA V has to go down as one of the best games of all time due to the amount of different activities you can take part in and the range of customization there is through the whole game.

Media Homework

Media Studies Homework

Q1. Most people in society will fall into the mainstream category. They are the sheep of society, they will watch what everyone is watching and buy what brand everybody is wearing rather that going for something out of the ordinary. I feel as if a show such as Britain's Got Talent would suit the mainstreamer as it is on at peak times on TV and it is a extremely popular show so they would have a lot of other mainstreamers to talk about it with.
The succeder tends to care about themselves more than anybody else. They have a set of goals and want to achieve them to be the best they can possibly be. A media text I think would suit the succeder category would be The Apprentice as ,even though it is watched by a lot of people and could now be considered mainstream, they would be able to relate with other people who are more caring about themselves than others. They would also be able to relate to the fact that all of the people on it want to succeed in life by starting they're own business.
The aspirer group are materialistic people, they will care more about their appearance than anything else and will be heavily influenced by the judgement of others. An example of media text that the aspirer would watch is America's Next Top Model which is full of aspiring models who care about their appearance a lot which would make the aspirer be able to relate to these people. This could also make them want to aspire to be a model also.

1b - I personally don't think that these categories are very helpful as it is impossible for somebody to be only categorised into one of these categories based on the media texts that they consume. Nobody is going to only consume mainstream media or aspirer or succeder. So it is impossible to categorize people. Although it can be useful to hit out at a mainstream audience as it will be more popular but that text is still going to appeal to some of the other groups too.7

1c - The X factor which is a talent show based on peoples singing, the programme airs at peak times of a weekend which means that it will have a lot of people watching. I think that The X Factor would mainly appeal to the mainstreamer. Due to the show being on at weekend after work times there would be a variety of different ages watching the show. However I would say that the typical viewer would probably be a parent in their mid 30s who works and is of a middle class. I think that the show would be watched by women more than men as I think men would get bored of listening to people singing and giving there sob stories about how it is their dream to sing in front of the judges. I think it would be aminly watched by people in the UK as that is where the show is based.

Media Studies - Fast and Furious 5 review - Lewis Brown

Fast and Furious, arguably (in my opinion) the most popular action film series there is. Fast and furious had a lot of hype to live up to due to the success and the quality of the past films. In my opinion this film went above and beyond the already high expectations of the public. it is the best fast and furious film there is.

The General Plot

The story line is a simple but exciting one, Dom (who is played by Vin Diesel) is broke out of prison by his sister Mia (who is played by Jordana Brewster) and Brian O'Connor (who is played by Paul Walker). The 3 then flee to Rio De Janeiro in Brazil where they are met by the most wanted, most powerful and richest man in the whole of Rio, Hernan Reyes. Reyes is not happy with the 3 and tries to kill them. while all this is happening the FBI have called in a high tier agent. Agent Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson). Long story short the 3 main characters and Hobbs team up to take out Reyes and every bit of money he has got. So the 3 characters recruit a team and set up to take down Reyes.

The Cinematography

The director uses multiple establishing shots throughout to give us a cinematic experience. However he also uses a balance of tracking shots where the camera is constantly moving to make us feel as if we are right in the heart in the action. This makes it more realistic and brings us closer to the characters and the action. The director also uses a lot of music in the background to futherly imply the meaning of the situation eg. intense music is introduced during the ambush scene

Overall i personally think that this is the best fast and furious ever made and i would strongly reccomend this to anyone who enjoys action films.
