Marketing, Promotion and the Internet

As you will know from any initial research that you have done into This is England, that it had a very small budget. This has an impact on every element of the film - particularly any spending on elements that don't end up on the screen.

Therefore paying for costly marketing is kept to a minimum. This is why the film only had one poster and one trailer.

To start with the poster - think of the following question whilst analysing the poster:

  1. Who or what is being represented by the poster?
  2. Suggest at least one audience for the film.
  3. Is this going to be a 'challenging' film? Give reasons for your answer...

As aforementioned the film also only had one trailer. When watching the trailer, consider the following questions...

  1. What genre is the movie?
  2. What representations are going to be noteworthy?

With so little money to spend on marketing then websites become a vital way of making a connection with an audience - and to generate a feel for the film.

Visit the official the This is England official website, as well as Shane Meadows' own site. You need to analyse the way the website and make notes on:
  • The overall look and feel
  • Video and Audio content
  • Images
  • Use of colour
  • Typography
  • Layout
  • Uses & Gratifications
  • Lines of Appeal
  • How it is similar to the poster and the trailer - does it compliment them?

Finally, watch the trailer again - could you sum up the story in just one sentence?
