Dave Grohl

Text 1. NME magazine special on Dave Grohls life.

The images used on the text show Dave looking angry and putting his finger up to the camera which is juxtaposed with the words underneath the imge, "nice guys finish first". These words are used because Grohl is often refered to as the 'nicest guy in rock' which is the preferred reading of him. Also the writing at the side "50 things you never knew about Dave!" this is added to the front to make the audience intrigued to what they might not know about him which will make them want to buy the magazine and see the things they dont know about him.

The encoders have chosen this image of Dave because it represents him as being cool which will appeal to his fans and people that might be fans of his music. Also the writing at the side will appeal to his fans as they will want to know more about him and listen to the "lost songs" and know if the new album is good or not.

NME will expect the audience to take a preferred reading to this text as people will see him cool, awesome and quite humorous as the face he is pulling would make the audience think he has a sense of humour.

Text 2. NME article reviewing Foo Fighters performance at Leeds Festival

The main images of the text is that of Dave and Taylor Hawkins (the drummer for Foo Fighters) rocking out whilst performing at Leeds Festival with the writing "Grohl tops the bill... Again!" to show the audience that he always puts on a good show.

The article begins with talking about other famous artists and that only Grohl's "Lupine grin" is that only thing that matters that weekend. The audience will find this funny and except this because most of the people picking up this magazine will be people who went to the festival and seen the Foo Fighters themselves and will be wanting to know what NME thought of it. They also call him the "unofficial king of Reading and Leeds" this is something else the audience will agree with because the article continues on to give reasons why they call him that. There is also a box at the side titled "How was it for you?" with people who seen them opinions on the show, the endcoders have done this so that people reading the magazine can relate and disagree or agree with the comments made.

Text 3. Extract from a Making of video

In this extract Grohl is pretending to be addicted to coffie whilst recording an album. He is pretending to be overly energetic and hyperactive to the audience, the preferred reading of this would be Grolh is addict to coffie and becomes childish and diva like without having his "fix" but people will not see it as this because of the way other media portrays him as being funny, comedic and up for a laugh so the audience will see that he is putting this on for the show.

Text 4. News article depicting the events of the iTunes Festival

Dave Grohl, Foo FightersIn this article Grohl is portrayed in two lights for kicking a guy out his show for "fighting". The article says "dont pity the Foo. Pity the guy that interupts their concert." this could be seen as a bad way in which Grohl is portrayed because he unjustly kicks a guy out without getting the full story of the situation. The article then goes on to suggest this act as being awesome and says that he tells the guy to get out he is met with cheers from the crowd.

The article that says "No one throws a (monkey) wrench into Grohls plans and gets away with it" this tells us that he is a serious person and that he might have a short temper for halting a song half way through and kicking this guy out. But they also convey Grohls sense of humour in this sentance as well by putting in the word monkey in brakets, which is that name of one of their songs. The encoders would want the audience to see the preferred reading of this wich is that Grohl is a cool guy he doesnt like people wrecking other peoples time whilst they are trying to have fun and that he does have a sense of humour but that the crowds enjoyment comes first. This is all sumed u[ that the closing line "and that folks, is how its done." which suggest that people should be taking notes from this and acting more like him in these situations.

Text 5. Spin magazine cover

Here we see two images of Grohl, one looking and playing his intrument, the other of him looking evil and more rock n roll. This is also with the words at the bottem "the secret side of Dave Grohl" would entise the audience to buy the magazine. The reasoning behind these image and subtitle is because of the double album he was bringing out at that time in which one album was heavy rock music, the other was more mellow laid back music this is shown by the two images and their contrast.

In the main images itself Grohl is holding two different guitars, a nice calm looking guitar in one image and a violant more rock guitar in the other, this is to show that the article is about his music and that he hasnt got a type of secret side that will portray him in a negative way. He is also dressed differently, in the more rock image he is wearing more causual clothes and a sweat band which suggests he is ready to rock, his stance also conveys this. And in the other he is wearing smarter clothes and is standing up straight to show his normality. The encoders will want the audience to pick up on this imagry to do with the double album he was bringing out and not in any other way as they are not a gossip magazine and do not want to convey him in a bad light.
