Success

How can we define the success of an a magazine?

Some of these ideas are very similar to the criteria we have previously used to measure the success of a film. Some of them are different. Here we go...

  • Reaching the target Audience
  • Preferred reading taken
  • Awards (yes, they do give awards to magazines!)
  • Appropriate and profitable adverts
  • More successful than competitors of similar genre
  • Longevity (how long has it been going)
  • Exclusivity of interviews/celebrity endorsement
  • Audience contribution/user generated content
  • Subscribers - people who pay for a year long subscription
  • Circulation - how many copies are bought
  • Readership - how many copies are read
Look at the second part of the Media Pack produced by IPC - make a note of the magazine's successes...

The Circulation and Readership information is out of date...

Here is the most up to date information from the ABC (Audit Bureau of Circulations) and the NRS (National Readership Survey)

This information is for the first half of 2015 - whilst it is obviously important to have the facts at your fingertips, an expert student will analyse them and make suggestions about the reasons why the figures are as they are. But also the implications of certain statistics.

The next table is the Readership statistics compared to magazines of a similar genre. For more information on how the NRS collects its data then visit their website by clicking here.

And finally an essay plan as to what you can discuss if asked about the success of the magazine. Remember that, as always, a success answer should not just be a bunch of facts that you have memorised - instead you must be analytical of the success and use textual evidence from the magazine as much as possible.
