The Mainstream

For mainstreamers, I’d choose a well known TV show as these people usually live their life choices as ‘we’ rather than ‘me’.  They are the largest group of people within the 4c’s across the world. ‘Celebrity Juice’ or ‘Britain’s got talent’ would be my choice. Both programmes are very popular and there is always talk after the programme has finished.  This means they will feel they fit in and feel secure in society if they know everything about popular programmes on television.

The Succeeder  

Succeeders possess self confidence, have a strong goal orientation and tend to be very organised.  For this I have chosen the film ‘Pursuit of Happyness’. This film is about A struggling salesman takes custody of his son as he's poised to begin a life-changing professional endeavour. He overcomes some of life’s greatest obstacles and never gives up, he has his eye set on a goal and doesn’t stop until he reaches it. Succeeders could relate or aspire to be like this man, or even have the same personality traits, so they will enjoy watching this film.

The Explorer

Explorers are people driven by a need for discovery, challenge and new frontiers.  ‘Eat Pray Love’ would be a perfect film for explorers.  It’s about a woman, who takes off on a journey around the world to find herself. Explorers love to try out new ideas and experiences so this media text would be perfect for them.

The aspirer

Aspirers are driven by other people’s perception of them, rather than their own values. As a result, they respond to what others perceive as being superficial: image, appearance, persona, charisma and fashion. An attractive pack is as important to them as its contents. For this I chose either ‘Vogue’ or ‘Elle’ magazine. Both are very high fashion and contain beautiful women and men, wearing luxurious expensive clothes and other beauty advertisements. This will appeal to aspirers as they will want to know what society thinks is beautiful and what it takes to have a high status.

1.b) I think all categories are helpful when defining audience types. Some of the categories link into each other, mainly the Succeeder and the Mainstreamer.  The succeeder will often seek out the best, which is usually the most popular, this fits in with the mainstreamer. The aspirers choices of status and fashion is also popular in society.

c) A programme that is on right now is Friends, which is a sit com featuring Jennifer Aniston, Courtney Cox, Mathew Perry, Matt DeBlanc, Lisa Kudrow and David Schwimmer. This show is usually on around late afternoon and evenings, about the time students get home from school/college and when adults return home from work. This comedy programme is targeted at adults and teens; therefore they put it on at times when people will be coming home. I don’t think the stereotypical viewer would be a child or elderly person. This programme could be for both men and women, as it has a friendship theme of both male and female characters included in it.
