In March 1973 Pink Floyd released a top selling album. The album now sits in Rock's hall of fame. The album is called 'The Dark Side Of the Moon' and without doubt it was the bands saving grace. Floyd had big problems in April 1968 when band member, Syd Barrett, left amid to speculations of mental illness and abusive drug use. During his last year with the band, he became increasingly more unreliable so cover members were being used. In 1968, Syd Barrett, the lead vocalist, guitarist, and primary songwriter was forced to leave because he was risking the bands success. Syd's school friend, David Gilmour, was chosen to replace him. Gilmour had formly been a cover for Syd during his absences.

The four members of the band; Roger waters, David Gilmour, Rick Wright and Nick Mason now set off to work on their masterpiece. Other additional members such as Clare Torry and Dick Parry helped them pull this off. In 1972, work on The Dark Side Of The Moon began. On 1st March 1973 the album was released. Even though this is a concept album, a number of the songs can stand on their own. 'Time' is a fine, country-filled, showstopper with a powerful guitar solo by David Gilmour and 'Money' is very easy on the ears thank to an appropriately raunchy sax playing by Dick Parry, who also contributes a wonderfully-stated, breathy solo to Us And Them.

The Dark Side Of the Moon frequently appears on rankings of the greatest albums of all-time. In 1987, Rolling Stone listed the LP 35th on its 'Top 100 Albums of the Last 20 Years',and sixteen years later, in 2003 the album polled in 43rd position on the magazine's list of '500 greatest albums of all time'. In 1978, the album had sold 11 million copies earning it a golden record. With the introduction of platinum in 1990, it became an 11x platinum album. By 1995 it was a 15x platinum album. In 2012 it is reported that Dark Side Of The Moon had sold 42 million copies.
