The romantic comedy is a genre that brings both romance and comedy into one film. Whilst the plot of a romantic comedy will vary, there are many characteristics that are very common in these films and the film normally has two strong lead characters, these characters are normally either friends, who end up overcoming certain obstacles and falling in love, or two strangers who instantly dislike each other but then over the course of the film, fall in love. The film contains a strong love interest and a healthy amount of comedy thrown into the mix so it appeals to wider audience. The film I have chosen from the Rom-Com genre is the 2007 film “knocked up” staring Katherine Heigl and Seth Rogen. This film is a perfect example of a typical rom com, it is about two strangers who meet on a night out and get into bed together, it ends up with the women becoming pregnant and to start off with they hate each other however as the film goes on they get closer and closer due to the fact they have a baby on the way together and then they end up falling in love at the end of the film. The film has all the characteristics of a rom com. The setting of the film is in a typical American suburb and is a common setting for films similar to this one. As for an English rom com it is normally in a city or a busy environment. The plot of the film is a typical one with the two strong lead characters meeting, falling out, but there is something that brings them together. The narrative of the story falls into todorov’s five stage theory. The male character is happy in his current state of equilibrium and then is met with a disruption of becoming a father, the recognition is that they confirm she is pregnant and then they try to become civil for the baby and end up falling in love. The new equilibrium is that they live together, happy ever after. Shot types in the film consist of wide shots a lot because it is always establishing scenes but there is a lot of close ups to when the film becomes more serious. The use of Seth rogen in the film is not his normal film because he wouldn’t normally be in a romantic film due to his funny nature in films however, he adapts well to this role and he brings a funny element to it. I feel this is a typical film for the rom com and shows a lot of their characteristics, it’s similar to other rom coms like “the proposal” “the ugly truth”. These films all show the characteristics of a rom com.
