There are different ways in which you can judge whether Slumdog millionaire was successful or not, the first aspect I am going to look it is cultural impact overall the film him. The song which is used a lot in the film, named 'J'ai ho' had a cultural impact to society as a cover of the song was brought out after the film, but to have even more of an impact the song was brought out by a popular girl group, 'The Pussycat Dolls', there is also other Bollywood movies being brought out just after the movie was released, both of these impacts connote that the film was a success, and other production companies want to expand off this success, to also gain something just as good. Cultural impact also includes catch phrases, which stick in people’s minds after watching the film, an example of this is 'This is our destiny', this shows how the audience have related to one of the themes of the film, and this has stuck in their minds. The film also had a global impact; this includes how the film was released in 109 countries, and was successful in all of these, this is good for the whole of the film/production company, as the more countries it is released in, the more money the film will make. Another connotation of the film being a success is its life after the cinema, the fact that the film went to the cinema, instead of straight to DVD is already a success for the film, as otherwise it wouldn’t of been as well known, and also would of affected the global impact mentioned above, as it may not as been as successful in as many countries, when the film was released onto DVD, this was also a huge success, as 2,190,722 units were sold, and are still being sold to this day, this shows how enjoyed the film was by those who watched it, when people buy a film on DVD it is usually because of them enjoying the film so much on cinema they want to watch it again, or those who have spoken about it have made it interesting. The films preferred reading was also met, with a high percentage of 94%, this shows that lots of film critics liked the film. The film was given a 5 star rating, and this point is backed up this quote from IMDb, “Slumdog Millionaire is the film world’s first globalized masterpiece” Audience response was also a great success, as the films screening was followed by fan site’s including positive responses of the film, also the style of word of mouth, where you respond to the film positively as of someone else telling you the film is good. Overall, I would say this film was a great success.
