Photograph analysis

The juxtaposition of the destruction with the fresh new flowers helps to create a moving sense of death. The anchorage reads "Fourteen bodies have been recovered so far, and as many as 176 people are still unaccounted for." The anchorage informs the audience that the flowers have been placed there by a person to acknowledge the deaths. The use of lighting in the photo gives a bleakness in the background but the bright flowers provide us with a glimmer of hope, perhaps that more people will be found safe. The background is desolate and vast, implying that there isn't any civilisation for miles. This could mean that the people who were trapped could of been waiting for a long time for help from another town. Also the foreground is more in focus than the background which draws our attention more towards the destroyed car and flowers. The photographer chose to capture the image in a medium shot so we can still see the destruction and the affects of the landslide in the background but also the flowers catch the audiences eye. The picture also follows the rule of thirds as the flowers are centred in the middle right where two lines cross. The use of this draws the audiences attention straight towards the flowers then allows them to survey the rest of the picture, learning more about the disaster.
