Evaluation
Shots 1 and 2 are shots influenced by Faithless’s Insomnia.
In insomnia the tracking shots are all in sync with the pace of the music. As
in the shots around 2:28, Maxi starts running as the pace of the beat
increases. The slow paced intro of my song is reflected in the length of the
shots and the pace of the tracking, which is in time with the bass guitar.
Jamiorquai’s virtual insanity had a particular shot which inspired
me when creating my storyboards. This shot consists of an invisible but
definitely existing cut, where a change of scenery happens during an action.
This looks very seamless and interesting. I have used a similar shot in my
storyboards on shots 6, 7 and 8.
In Coolio’s Gangster’s Paradise many tracking shots move from
around Coolio’s back to view Michelle Phiffer who is sitting opposite. The
camera moves from left to right. I used the idea of this shot in my storyboards
on shot 20 and 21. However instead of moving left to right we tracked the
camera from down to up revealing the pub and not a famous actor.
In
NWA’s Straight Outta Compton we see shots from the back seat of a car into the
front of the car. In this video we see the drivers seat, which is occupied by
the driver. I was informed by this shot to place a very similar shot in my storyboards.
In my storyboard on shot 33 we see the passenger seat which is occupied by a
big stash of money.
In I Don't Like Mondays by The Boomtown Rats we see an over the shoulder around 2:30 but Bob Geldof in this shot is looking at the camera. In my shot I had the subject to be facing the other way and the camera looking over his shoulder from behind him. This shot and would be the first of a shot reverse shot.
The shot reverse shot will take place in my storyboards and has been influenced by Five's Keep On Movin'. The shot reserve shot from 1:43 to 1:48 in their video is the shot which I have used in my video. I have used this shot to add the effect of the subject being omniscient. When he walks into the pub we only see over his shoulder and before he is even passed the door to see the other side of the room we have a shot in-between that shows the side of the pub which is behind that obstructed view.
In Parklife by Blur there are a few shots from 2:08 to 2:12 that very much alike my shots on my storyboards. This shot is where the camera is static and in a fixed position. The subject will then pass from one side of the shot to the other. this creates the sense on him being on the move. There are two account of this type of shot in my storyboards.
My narrative was influenced by Steve Miller Band's Take the money and run, however not the exact same but relative to the cowboy lifestyle category. The actors in that music video are different to the individual character in my music video. The concept of a robbery is different too. Furthermore the involvement with the police doesn’t feature in my music video. The narrative ideology I used from this music video was the ideology of making money, fast, in any way possible. The opening tracking shot that reveals them sitting there, in their living room, is similar to my opening shot. However my shot reveals the actor from behind much like the next shot of the Steve Miller Band’s music video.

The target audience of my music video must be classified using a certain model. The audience classification makes me believe that the gender of the music video is for both males and females of 16-21. This is because the main actors teenager which encourages you to relate. Manslow’s Hierarchy or Needs is the most effective method for deciding my target audience. I believe the audience of my music video are those who look for love and belonging needs therefore the 4c's model may see them as The mainstreamer who strives for a feeling of security. This music video is abstract to the esteem which looks for control and confidence. The relationship between the actors is portrayed as complicated therefore their sexual intimacy is challenged. Conveying the need for a relationship more than friendship demonstrates that the target audience will want to this love and belonging. The Traumatic ending of the video will encourage a cynical approach toward the young relationship and therefore the cynics of the audience will be targeted.
The narrative of the story can become quite confusing because of the very quick montages and foreshadowing which both narrative devices are used to make the video interesting. However the narrative can be simply explained. The montages are timed perfectly for the beat of the song however the beat is pretty fast. The fast paced shots creat this monatge which symbolises a complicated situation. The montage is of anonymous subjects until 10 seconds in where we see shots of the actors. 13 seconds in we see the actors holding hands indicating a relationship status. The longer shots of the actor on the bed has no origin. We dont yet know what has happened for him to look miserable while looking a picture of his girlfriend. The shots then lead to a panning shot as he walks into the kitchen. surprisingly the female actor is sat behind him who conveys a excited and enthusiastic expression. The arguement takes place here as he confronts his companion, who walks off. Another series of quick shots happen as the first verse kicks in. We see shots of the actors, like at the start, however with a different mood. This conveys a complication in the narrative. Many nuetral shots of trees, puddles and logs fill in the rest of the montage. The nuetral shots are during a miserable day, where the sky is grey and its raining. This demonstrates that the narrative is cynical. The shots of the couple holding hands is used inside the complication to backflash on happy times. Shots of the actors together are juxstaposed with shots of the female actor crying. This is used to symbolise the ups and downs of young relationships. Yet another agruement takes place which shows the male actor again with his phone on the bed. The image on the phone is one of his girlfriend which proves a sense of love and belonging between the couple. The same moods are shared during 1:59. both actors have their head in their hands, feeling melencholy about the whole situation. A shot reverse shot is used as the female actor makes her way upstairs with the shots of them together at the table. Another montage is used that gives the viewers enough time to sum up what has happened up to know, with multiple arguements and shots of happier times. The male actor is on the move before becoming angry with himself while outside on his own. Meanwhile the female actor has moved to upstairs before sending a message on her phone. Shots of blood and cut wrists indicates self harm. We realise its suicide when the male actors finds his companion dead in the bath tub. As the music becomes more mellow, the shots are slower and brighter symbolising a religious smybol of 'the light'. The audience will each have their own ideologies on how this music video is conterversial but all of which will be cynical. This can be influenced by a personal experience, education, family or cultural differences. Many shots are medium close up to extreme close up. This informs the audience to use the personal identity. The audience should respond to the video by being disheartened therefore obtain the oppositional reading by. The actors in the video denotes a young relationship by shots of intimacya and break-ups. Their need for love and belonging is fulfilled when multiple signifiers inform the readers of love such as the text message. The lifestyle categories have been used and that is why I feel that the audience will be the most like cynics.
A video which is alike mine and also has
the same narrative is Emma by Hot Chocolate. The lyrics go "To find her lying still and cold" during a verse therefore they are suggesting the
audience to be a cynic as she conveys suicide. These lyrics can inform listeners, therefore with
interaction becomes an active audience. They are active because as with my
music video this song will imply the ideology of it being common sense to have an oppositional reading. This makes this ideology dominant suggesting a hegemonic
reading too. Hot Chocolates lyrics are "I love you" This needs no explanation as it’s in the mainstreamers interest to have love and belonging. It is the same message from the text message of my music video.
