About the film THE DETECTIVE.. "details some forms of our oppression (and self-oppression) takes. But all the same, it cannot help but reproduce the dominant image of gays"

By Richard Dyer

From Jump Cut, no.18 August 1978,pp. 15-16 copyright Jump Cut: A Review of Temporary Media, 1978, 2005.

This quote is basically telling us that although we may feel or told films are taking a huge step forward in terms of representation of homosexuality, They are still enforcing our ideology of Gays.

For example in my Case Study of Philadelphia, The film was seen to be a huge step forward for gays in film as it tackles homophobia and AIDS but this still links the two together and paints a negative image and it shows him going into a gay picture house where he will contract AIDs through sex which reinforces the ideology that AIDs is a gay disease.
