During their conversation we see an over the shoulder shot of Sam, this tells the audiences the he is distressed about the situation of not being able to marry Marion and its like by looking out of the window he is trying to collect his thoughts.
I think that throughout the film it is mostly a restricted narration as the only character we are able to identify with is Marion Crane. This is restricted narration as we travel with her, when she tries to run away after stealing the money from Cassidy, up until she is murdered. So, because we traveled with her for a lot of the film so we spend a lot of time looking at her and we learn information at the same time she does; even when we hear a voice over of her thoughts because when she is the car we hear her imaging what everyone she left behind are saying about her and we hear her imagining Cassidy saying "if any of it is missing, I'll replace it with her fine, soft flesh." These are very intimate, so us being able to hear them really allows the audience to identify with her.
Having her steal the money doesn't bother us as we know that Cassidy, the man she stole the money off, is a bit of a sordid and he flirts with Marion, even though she is clearly a lot younger than him; also she needs the money so that we can be with Sam, which is what we want.
The film carries a lot of tension. The first time the film is tense is when we see Marion steal the money because we don't know what her intentions are. When the audience figure out that she is trying to run away and is about to do this, she is stopped in her car at a red light and she is seen by her boss. This creates tension as we don't know whether Marion is going to succeed in running away. The tension is then added to this when the police officer shows up to ask for Marions license when she is pulled off the side of the road, asleep in her car; this creates tension as it is Marions point of view shot and a close up shot of the police officer looking right at the camera at the audience so it is threatening, however we cannot see his eyes, which is where people look when talking to someone and eyes are what show emotion and 'eyes are the windows to the sole' is a well known metaphor.
