Toto - Africa

Camera/Editing

We begin with a long panning shot coming down from a ceiling fan, the camera eventually directs its attention towards to artist who begins singing, The second shot in the video doesn't come until 27 seconds in.We get a lot of close up shots of the globe which is spinning which always inevitably ends on Africa, The editing is slow and shots often fade into each other.a

Narrative

The song is about one man and his love of the continent of Africa. He loves everything he sees and hears about the place , "I hear the drums echoing tonight". At times he relates himself to the wild dog as they both seek companionship, "the wild dogs cry out in the night".

Conventional/Unconventional

The video tells the conventional tale of someone who has to leave their lover however in this case the mans lover is Africa, Instead of a conventional shot of looking at a past picture of a couple together (if it were two people leaving each other) the man glares at globes and books about Africa. In this case the video could be considered unconventional.
