Music Video Research 6
Artist: Phil Collins
Track: Sussudio
Director: Unknown
Camera/Editing
The Camera and Editing make us feel like it is from a movie as you can tell from the narrative, but ill get to that later. There are P.O.V shots, we see them from Phil Collins point of view, and we also see it from different places within the Bar, so this leads us to believe that we are seeing it from many different points of view. there are also quite a few close ups of the band members, i would't say that these are points of view, but there are more P.O.V shots than any other. The editing is normal i would say, the editing does go along with the beat, but other that that it's quite normal.
Narrative
The music video, is of a live show featuring Phil Collins playing in a pub, and the people in the audience aren't really interested in his music, then when Phil Collins begins to play Sussudio the crowd slowly begins to migrate to the front of the stage as the song progresses and then when the song ends, the crowd is cheering them. the camera makes it feel like an old movie, of a bands rise to fame. The video is actually quite funny, as Phil Collin is super famous, and he is playing a small gig, in a pub, to an uninterested crowd.
Conventional/Unconventional
I'd say that this video is very conventional. Just a simple narrative, not really any fast cuts, and the Camera i jut pretty normal, makes it feel exactly like an ordinary music video. I'd say then maybe the only unconventionality of the video, is the fact that in the video, Phil Collins is not at all popular; this is unconventional as in most music video the members of the band are normally very famous and everyone knows them, but in this case no one is bothered that Phil Collins is on stage. What Works?
I would say that the use of a simple narrative, makes you focus more on the song works well, and so does the use of P.O.V shots. If I were to borrow anything, i might borrow the use of P.O.V shots.
