Football: The New Hegenomy

I chose this article as I have an interest in hegemony, and how the powers can influence peoples lives through media, as well as the interest I have in football being an important factor.

This article was written by a group of A2 students from Alexandra Park School. The article is pretty much about football, but not what you would usually expect in a football article, more about how football is becoming the new hegemony, and how we as an audience don't just watch football for entertainment, but for an infinite amount of reasons. Football, often seen as a working class mens sport, is becoming a lot more, and now appeals to an endless amount of people.


The point of this article is to show that, although primarily seen as a working class sport, that it in fact appeals to all different types of audience, rather than the stereotyped ones. It also demonstrates the divide that the media has made more apparent between the footballing elite and the average fan, through sponsorship deals etc, as well as stating how the cultural elite have turned football into a way of keeping the masses 'mindlessly entertained'. It also touches on how the elite can dictate who the sport appeals to, for example through advertising. In America, the elite have influenced the principles of football to appeal to women, and how it is the opposite in europe. It states
