Lord Of THe Rings Analysis

Lord Of The Rings: Fellowship Of The Ring Analysis

The first shot we see is of the four Hobbits. We see them hiding underneath the roots of a tree. This is a wide angled shot and makes the four characters look very small and powerless. There is lots of space in the frame; this shows the audience that there will be something coming to ill the space. This builds the tension and suspense of what is to come.

The next shot shows the Ring Wraith arrive on a horse. This is a low angled shot and makes the characters look vulnerable still and how the Ring Wraith looks powerful. This makes the audience see the Ring Wraith as a mysterious character and how it looks down to the characters and us. There is still quite a lot of space in the frame but the Ring Wraith still takes up most of the frame.

The next shot is a low angled close up of Frodo. This establishes that he is the ring bearer. It also shows the audience that Frodo is the main character and how the Ring Wraith is after him because he has the rig. The close up shows Frodo as a strong character here because the audience is looking up at him. It shows the importance of Frodo.

The next shot is an extreme close up of Frodo. We can only see his eyes; the rest of the space is the tree. It shows how he is isolated and trapped. He is in the centre of the frame showing his importance. In this shot we can see how he has nowhere to run. This creates tension of whether he will be caught or not. If you were watching this film out of context then you would see from this scene that Frodo is the main character.

The next series of shots are cut – ins. These are very quick shots to show what is going on. The audience is watching trough Frodo’s eyes, which then involves the audience. The scene happens in slow motion to show the importance and tension of the moment. They show the Ring Wraith getting of the horse this; then creates suspense and makes the audience wonder what is going to happen. The fact that we can’t see the body of the Ring Wraith also builds suspense because you don’t know what to expect just like the characters.

The next shot is a mid – shot of the Ring Wraith. Looking for the ring. We can see all four Hobbits in the shat. They look very cramped which shows how they again have nowhere to run. It makes the mood change dramatically because the Ring Wraith is very dark which makes the scene seem dark as well. This makes the scene more interesting as well because the audience can’t see the face of the Ring Wraith. This adds mystery to the scene as well because it’s the idea of the unknown. The Ring Wraith is higher up in the shot, which symbolises the power and the fear that it has on the characters.

In the next shot we see a close – up of Frodo about to be seen by the Ring Wraith. The Ring Wraiths hand is about to cover Frodo’s face showing the power the Ring Wraith has on him. It also shows him as the main character again and how he has the ring. The shot is also a high angle. It shows how Frodo is weaker than the Ring Wraith and how it is much stronger than him. It shows how vulnerabl Frodo is now because of the ring.
