Slumdog Millionaire - Success

                                                                        Success

The film industry has lots of different ways of measuring success, the most notable of which is how they like to pat each other on the back with numerous awards ceremonies, in order to remind themselves just how great they are; Slumdog Millionaire is no different, and can pride itself on the amount of awards both the film and the cast and crew won. The most notable and prestigious that are available to win would be the Best Film awards in the Oscars, BAFTAS etc; which Slumdog can proudly say it has won. In total Slumdog can say that it has won 161 awards, as well as being nominated with another 93. Another way in which you are able to measure a films success is how much it manages to make at the box office, which once again Slumdog can be proud of. In America alone it made $141,319,928, with $384,519,665  worldwide. Overall it made just over 25 times more than the original cost of 15 million. Critically, the film was fairly successful, and did well the majority of critics, along with having a fair amount of positive reviews from critics and film fans alike, earning a rating of 8.0 on IMDB and a 92% on Rotten Tomatoes, which helps to add to the overall success of the film. Another way in which you are able to measure a films success is by whether the target audience was met, which in Slumdog Millionaires is case is difficult to answer, as it can appeal to lots of different audiences. For example the marketing for the film in the UK was portraying the film as a feel-good, romantic and mainstream film, whereas the marketing in the US portrayed the film as a challenging film and one for the explorer, however in the end I see this film as one for the mainstream, and one which met the expectations of the mainstreamer, with the knight (Jamal), and the princess (Latika), and of course the mainstream audience are rewarded with their beloved happy ending. The impact of the film is another way that you can measure a films success, and it is fair to say it had quite the impact the people involved, particularly the people involved. For example, Dev Patel, the actor who played Jamal, earned himself a lot of big movies roles, and director Danny Boyle earned himself the role of managing the Olympics. In conclusion it is fair to say that the film was successful, for everyone involved, it was Fox Searchlight Productions highest grossing film, and opened up a lot of doorways for all the cast ad crew to go on and be successful.
