The film Harry Potter and the sorcerer's/philosopher's stone belongs to the fantasy genre. This was the first Harry Potter movie so this trailer relies heavily on getting across the idea that the genre is fantasy.
You can tell this movie is fantasy due to the mise-en-scene use such as the cloaks the students wear, cloaks are very common in fantasy movies as it gives the idea of futuristic and takes you to another world as that is their everyday uniform that they have to wear for school which is completely different to the things we wear for school so it transports you to the wizarding world that they are in. Also the use of the wands and the line of dialogue "You're a wizard Harry" informs the audience that he is a wizard the same time he finds out himself, all of this is futuristic and takes us to a new world because we know ourselves that wizards aren't real and that we cant wave a magic sick and say a spell to make anything happen so it lets the audience experience a new world away from reality.
The setting of the caste as it shows the small boats with lamps show the fantasy aspect as everyone wants to go to school in a caste and have moving stairs to get around the building. This also relates to the other wold that the audience have been taken to and creates an imagination of what if there were wizards in the real world and makes the fantasy aspect of the movie come to life through peoples imagination. Also the huge dining hall with rows of tables give the idea of a boarding school however the fire burning torch light by the walls give it a mystery and dangerous element as fire has connotations of danger and fear, this gives the impression there will be elements of danger that the characters face during the movie.
The music used is very ancestral and atmospheric setting the mood that being a wizard isn't always taken lightly and there will be bumps in the road for the wizards. The music starts very uplifting and enjoyable to the point where Harry is told he is a wizard but after that point the music changes to tension building music to create the idea that something big is gonna happen in the movie.
The pacing of the trailer alters as it has some lengthy shots however as the tension builds it shows quite quick editing giving a sort of action feel to the trailer telling the consumer that there will be action elements involved but not like the ordinary every day movies but this is fantasy so it will involves spells and use mysterious and mythical objects. Many of the shots in this trailer are wide and long shots so that we can see where the characters are so that we can see the environment they are placed in and gives it the fantasy aspect and we can see that from the places they are in such as the castle. If there were a lot of close-ups and mid shots we wouldn't e able to understand that it is fantasy but because we get to see the things they are dressed in and holding and where they are it all adds to the fact they are wizards and the genre is fantasy.
The story line that is shown in this trailer is about a young normal boy that happened to be a wizard and is told one night on this birthday, his world is then turned upside down as he believed he was just a normal every day boy but is put into the world of magic, unknown to everything and attends a school where he learns how to use his powers for good. Along the way he encounters a lot of obstacles that put him and his friends in danger. The story line that is used is typical of a fantasy films as it is a build up that leads to a problem and how they solve it, this type of story line is all about building tension and seeing who the villain is and what the final outcome is.
The term "fantasy" refers to our unconscious desires (dreams, daydreams, wishes), this movie relates perfectly to this as when you are a child you always want to be able to cast spells and turn people into frogs and other mythical things so this movie really appeals to everyone's inner child but at the same time appeals to how they want to explore and hoe children always find trouble but Harry gets in danger which would have people on the edge of their seat.
Fantasy movies tend to usually have a positive outcome, this movie is perfect for that as Harry and his friends are always the victors and always finish the story smiling. Another typical feature of the fantasy genre is they usually have a simplistic linear narrative, an example of this would be 'Lord of the rings' the hobbits journey across middle earth encounters danger and difficulty but overcomes the challenges that get in the way.
The main feature of a fantasy film would be that almost all of them have elements of magic, wonder, supernatural beings, escapism and extraordinary creatures. This is shown through the make believe worlds that they are always placed in such as Hogwarts, Middle earth, Neverland etc. In addition to this the main there would always be the hero/heroine embarking on their quest and come across a villainous character in order to succeed. In this case it would be Harry, Hermione and Ron set out to defeat Lord Voldemort.
Harry Potter is the perfect movie that appeals to all the conventions and ideologies of the fantasy genre and give the audience exactly what they want when going to see a fantasy movie, it doesn't challenge any genre conventions and sticks to the genre as a whole.
