Magazine cover analysis

The Masthead
The masthead on a typical magazine cover will fill up to 15-20% of the cover. It is prominent and will usually make the audience aware of the brand's identity and house style. They are normally just one word and will have more than one meaning.
For this magazine cover the masthead does fill a large percentage of the page. The colour of the masthead varies on each of the vogue covers, the masthead overall does attract the readers attention and highlights what the magazine is about. The word vogue means the prevailing fashion or style at a particular time.

The Strapline
The strapline on a magazine is a phrase or slogan usually positioned below the masthead that sums up the tone and the ideologies of the magazine. I will also sometime be play on words or have multiple meanings some of which may only be understood by the target audience due to the necessity of some specialist information.
There is however, no strapline on the Vogue cover. Perhaps this is due to the fact that this is a highly famous fashion magazine therefore even those who do not buy the magazine know what the magazine is selling so that means that there does not need to be a strapline.

Coverlines
Coverlines constitute most of the copy on a magazine cover and are short descriptions f the stories that can be found inside the magazine. Of the coverlines there will be one that is more prominent than the others and this is called a main coverline. In a newspaper we might refer to this as a headline. However this is not the case for a magazine.
The coverlines on Vogue hint at the stories that will be included in the magazine. They are also tinted in the same colour as the masthead in order to attract the readers attention. The main coverline on this magazine is 'HOW TO PERFECT STANDOUT STYLE'.This grabs the readers attention but also highlights what will be included in the magazine.

Main Image
The main image of a magazine usually fills the entire cover. It will also feature an elite person.
On this Cover of Vogue Emilia Clarke is the main image. She is becoming increasingly more famous and people tend to look up to her style.
