Semiotic Analysis of a Magazine Cover

Semiotic Analysis of a Magazine Cover
XXL

Masthead
The Masthead 'XXL' is positioned to the top left of the cover in bold writing and capital letters, within a red box.
The use of bold, capital letters implies that this magazine is important and it will catch the eye of the audience. The name 'XXL' means "Extra, Extra Large" and this has connotations to the idea of "Bigger is Better". The bigger you are means the more successful you will be, so the aim is to get as big as you can get to become the best. This choice of the masthead has been made as rappers are always competing against each other to become the biggest and the best, much more competitive than any other music industry.

Main Image
The Main Image of 'Lil Wayne' is used as he is a iconic, well known rapper and represents the stereotyped view of rappers in general. The Main Image is placed in front of the masthead to illustrate his importance to the magazine and the music genre.
