Film stars over the past two decades have become something that can be seen as a thing of the past. Film stars used to be the thing that made a film what it is but now they are seen to be not as important as what they used to be. They are now used because someone is needed to play the roles and characters. Stars like Will Smith used to be used for the American hero that always comes in and defeats the villain but since the explosion of franchises stars aren’t used to advertise the film anymore. Whatever stars used to offer us s now done by franchises. This statement is very true because we used to have one sort of actor to play the hero and that would be their role for their career. This was like Will Smith because he used to be the hero in action films but now he isn’t heard of often now. For example in the new Star Wars film, which is a franchise, we have a new hero instead of the one from the old Star Wars film and this is a new actress so it shows that stars are just irrelevant now.

 Stars can be needed to get the ratings up and better publicity for a movie. For example the film Home (2015) this film had Jim Parsons in it as the voice for the main character and in my opinion they couldn’t of got a better voice for it. He is well known for his role as Sheldon Cooper in the TV show The Big Bang Theory and his character of Sheldon is very comedic and his voice is well known for being comedic so he has made this film more popular because just by his voice it tells the audience that it is going to be a comedic film. Many people hadn’t heard of this film but for me having Jim Parsons in it made me want to see it so I feel that stars are important to films and producers. Another example is the replacement of actors in films. For example if there would have been a different actor in the last Harry Potter movie there would have been a lot of people complaining so actors are an important part in sequels of films. Without them the films would not be as popular because of the change.

Since the arrival of franchises actors have found it harder to get roles because once they start they are hard to get roles in. there are now not a lot of standalone films so there aren’t going to be many roles for the hero such as Will Smith. This has changed the way we see actors because Will Smith released that he had attacked someone once and got away with it. As a result of this he has changed roles to a villain so he can get more roles. This shows that franchises have started to make stars something that doesn’t need to be looked at anymore and it doesn’t matter who the stars are and it’s the characters that matter. A new film called The Revenant is mainly a star driven film because it is not a franchise and its popularity has grew because of the stars in it such as Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hardy.
