Box Office Figures Falling. Why?

I think that the box office figures have fallen over the past few decades because of the increase in TV and online providers such as Netflix. Netflix is a monthly subscription of £5.99 a month. This is very cheap for what is on it. Netflix has its own shows such as Making A Murderer and House Of Cards. These are very popular shows that were first shown on Netflix and this is the only place you could watch them. This has lead to people choosing this over the cinema because it is a lot cheaper. A normal standard cinema ticket costs about £10 but Netflix only costs £5.99 a month and not per visit like the cinema. Shows such as Breaking Bad have every series of the show on Netflix and this means there are many hours of the programme to watch. The cinema only provides a short experience such as 2 hours but there are shorter films. I think of it as why would I pay £10 to watch a two hour film once when I can watch hours of TV whenever I want for a lower price. I would rather just wait for the DVD because it is about the same price as the cinema but I can watch it whenever I feel like it.

Another service that lets you stream TV shows and films is the on demand services. I have sky at home and this is allows me to see any film or TV show that they have added to their service whenever I want. I love this service because it allows me to sit back and watch a film without paying for it. This is because the on demand service is free with sky when you are with their company. You of course have to pay for the subscription but it is worth it as you get a lot of popular films and TV shows. This is also good for catching up on shows you have missed using BBC iPlayer and ITV Player.

Online there are a range of services for catching up on shows you have missed such as BBC iPlayer and ITV Player. They are free services that allow you to watch all the programmes that have been on in the past seven days. This is a great way to watch some TV quickly and easily and I think this is why there is a decline in cinema. People are choosing to stay in and catch up on shows they like or watch a film that they know they like or one they want to see for free. The on demand service puts films onto sky store when the film is released on DVD but after a year or so it is then put on demand for free and you can watch it as many times as you want. People are thinking that rather than paying £10 to see a film in the cinema that you may not even like you can wait for a while and then watch it for about £3 on sky store or wait even longer and watch it for free. This is why people are choosing not to go to the cinema. There are also many other people at the cinema that can be quite annoying when you are trying to watch the film. This can be very distracting and quite annoying because you can’t watch the film properly. Especially if the film is a complicated narrative and you need to concentrate.

The rise in better alternatives in technology rather than cinema is stopping people going to the cinema to see films. The price of the cinema is getting too high for most people so it is easier and cheaper to just watch it at home when it comes out on DVD or on sky. The beauty of that is that you can watch a DVD with a lot of people and only have to pay once so you save a lot of money if you have a large family. The downside to this though is that you have to wait for it to come out on DVD and you are at risk of hearing spoilers especially if it is a huge film such as Star Wars The Force Awakens, which contained huge spoilers. So the film could have been ruined for you. This is why I think that the box office figures have fallen over the past few years but I don’t think that they will drop so much that cinema wont exist anymore and we will all have to watch it on sky services. If this happened I think it would come as a shock to many people as it has been a huge impact on everyone’s lives. The figures may continue to fall in years that don’t contain many franchise films like Star Wars and Marvel but I don’t think that in years were there are many franchise films. This is because there are many franchises at the moment and they are becoming very popular.

I don’t think the figure will keep falling over the next few years because there are new franchise films coming up that will be huge. These include Star Wars and Harry Potter. There are at least one star wars films per year up to 20
