Mean Girls Review

Mean girls, one of the most popular film made a hit when it was released in 2004. The amazing comedy film fought for many peoples attention especially teenage girls.the film is an insight of what people expect high school to be like and this creates an expectation to those who are soon to start high school. We can clearly see that Mean Girls was intended to be viewed by ladies as the clues that are given. For example, the main characters for Mean Girls are mostly female characters besides a few male characters who are not as important.

A brief overview of the film is that it is based on four teenage girls who change the way one of their new group mate are. Lindsey Lohan plays the main character of the film Cady. The character Cady is played to be quite unaware of the teenage girl life and how other teenage girls act towards each other, she comes across a kind girl at first but the power of society and her new friends soon change that. Katie (played by Lindsey Lohan) falls for a boy called Aaron, but he is one of her new friends ex boyfriend which doesn't turn out very well. In the end, the two Cady and Aaron end up together and have a dance at their high school ball. this plays up to the audiences expectations as they all want to see them get together as it is obvious from the beginning that something was going to happen. Also, as it is a film targeted for teenagers, to see this ending makes it feel real as this is what teenage girls intend to have at this age. this creates a stereotypical look for the way high school should plan out.

Lindsey Lohan plays a very important part as she is not what you expect a teenage girl to be like. The character grabs the viewers attention as it shows that all girls are not the same and don't think about life in the same way as others. The character Cady is played extremely well by Lohan as she meets up the the expectations and almost shocks the audience at how different she can make her appearance change. Mean Girls doesn't have many eye catching technical effetcs although it does have one key scene which is when a long shot is took of the four girls (the so called popular ones) Cady, Regina, Gretchen and Karen. the long shot portrays then walking in slow motion being loved and looked at by the crowd in school. This creates a meaning that most girls just think about how they look and how popular they are.

Throughout the film the mood changes as at the start of the film. life seems to be going quite rough for Cady as she is not accepted at first as she moved from Africa. This creates quite a sad atmosphere as the viewers feel sorry for Cady as she should not be looked at who treated in a different way. However, the mood picks up as Cady is accepted into the mean but popular girls, Regina, Gretchen and Karen. This creates a happier mood as Cady has made new mates. Mean girls has a fast paste change involving the mood and tone as it then switches back to Cady being in a bad atmosphere as she almost loses all of her mates as the popularity goes to her head. At the end of the film, the mood and tone is calm and relaxed as everything worked out for the main characters of the film, Cady ended up with Aaron, Regina is no longer seen as a 'mean girl', and Karen and Gretchen make new friends and fit in perfectly so the film ends with a happy mood.

Themes that often occur in Mean Girls is dis-loyalty as they are all suppose to be friends but they all have secret plans to catch their own friends out. This portrays a negative perspective for teenage girls because it shows that they are fake as they act different to who they really are.For example. Cady has secret missions to make Regina put weight on by giving her some protein bars, this shows the audience that not every so called friend is loyal.  Another theme in Mean Girls is friendship. Although the friendships are broken throughout the film they all seem to come back together at the end, this shows that no matter what you can always regain that level of friendship.

Throughout the film, the background music seems to be upbeat, when Cady, Regina, Gretchen and Karen are walking through the hall ways in school dramatic music is played in the background which implies that they are important to the school and they should be looked at and stand out. A similar film to Mean Girls is Clueless where popularity is fought for along with a boy, this is the usual thing that supposedly happens in teenage films targeted for girls. The two films both have a girl who falls for a boy that she can't have but in the end time goes on and it is just so that they end up with this boy they want. I really enjoy the film Mean Girls, as I am a similar age to the characters so I feel that it is suitable to me as I can relate to what could happen in my life. Also the films is hysterical so it keeps a constant interest of the film so I don't get bored. I wonder will all girls think that they're high school life will plan out like that or do they know what the reality is?
