Lines of Appeal

1. This advert for John West Salmon ( tinned red salmon supplier) starts in the style of a nature documentary, showing  a group of bears catching salmon at the mouth of a river, but things take a turn for the bizarre when a John West fisherman enters the fray to attempt to grab one of the fish one of the bears has caught and put aside, they then start fighting after the bear catches the fisherman trying to steal his fish, in a iconic kung-fu style way. The advert draws to an end when fisherman distracts the bear by pointing to an imaginary eagle and kicks his adversary in the balls. This advert is portrayed in impossible and ridiculous scenario, we all know that if we even came close to a bear, it would easily have us for dinner if it wanted to, aswell as the iconic kung-fu moves that some being recognisable like the Muhammad Ali foot movement. Including things like this can draw the audience in more as they know how the impression is used in the advert. If an advert makes us laugh and brings amusement at the time that we are watching it, it makes it more memorable than others, keeping a product in an individuals memory suggests   that when they are out shopping, they could be reminded of it and insist on purchasing it. The target audience for this advertisement i think could vary from a mainstream individual and one of the explorer audience, both from Young and Rubicans 4Cs model. Mainstreamist like to follow the crowd and in this case would want to feast on what the latest product sparks others eyes, the advert was released in 2000 and has hit 300 million views by 2006, the director even picked up an award along the way, the advert became very popular and the amount of John West's branded salmon purchased in stores increased, making the main streamer seem interested as everyone else was.

2. The Subway 'Eat Fresh' slogan have been the constant words that we see under the billboards we drive and walk past for years, and in some way makes us feel less guilty and more comfortable with eating what is known as a fast food, as well as McDonalds and KFC. The words chosen for this particular strap line i think are very clever, most of the modern worlds fast foods are notoriously bad for us, containing large amounts of fats and salts. However the subways slogan makes us think the opposite, it speaks to the audience in a way that your sandwich, your fillings and bread are always fresh for you to eat, which is what we want from hand prepared foods. The word 'fresh' also makes us think of things like lettuce and how crunchy it is when its fresh, it makes us think of fresh vegetables, which are good for us unlike many other fast food products, this makes us feel OK to eat this particular fast food meaning that more people are going to notice it and want to eat it. It makes it more memorable than other fast food slogans like McDonalds' 'i'm lovin it,' we know we love McDonalds, however we know its not very good for us and we most of the time feel guilty and undeserved when eating it. However when we eat subway, we know its fresh and we know its better for us than other fast foods, making us enjoy eating it more as we know its classed as a fast food but we know its healthier than others, making us feeling less guilty and more deserved for it.

3. For comic relief, every year celebrities are sent to places like Nigeria, Samalia and places all around Africa, to overflowed hospitals full of sick and dying children, slums full of dirty landscapes and poor, diseased children. When we see this on the television we normally do feel sympathy and think about the people in those conditions but it soon passes us. However when we see the celebrities on comic relief meeting the parents of these malnourished babies and witnessing these types of places and seeing what the people have to go through on a daily basis, it hits us more as an individual. As we see someone we look up too or know of others who do, in the places described and talking to the people there as they make their small videos to let the UK know how important it is to donate, we see how it physically and mentally affects them as a person, we see a side to the celebrity that we have never seen before which not only makes us realise how awful it is, but how shocking it is to experience as an individual. We see how the situations bring the celebrities to tears because of how such young, small children have only a 40% chance of reaching the age of 5 in certain places around the world. We witness things like parents being told that malaria has caused their child to die, and how they cant help them grow because they have no food to give them. The truly heartbreaking stories have an affect on the celebrities and that is transferred to the audience in the UK.

4. This video was released in 2009, the song 'love this town' by Dizzie Rascal, topped the charts, however the video is very interesting but also powerful. The video shows dizzie and a group of what supposedly are his friends, dressed in all black and wearing cloths around their faces. it shows  various scenarios of the group helping around the town, for example the first shows them running up to a shop window, they all cover their faces and we immediately assume that they are going to run into he shop and and steal from it, one of the group run up to the shop window with a bucket and we assume that he is going to smash the glass with it, however he swills it with soapy water and the rest of the group join with sponges and cloths cleaning the window, one of the group grab the brush off the shop keeper and starts to brush up also. It just goes to show how we perceive the youth of London, which Dizzie raps about, how just because a young person is black or has their hood up and is dressed in all black does not mean that they are around to cause trouble, this is the stereotype the video is trying to destroy. Throughout the video, scenarios like this continue, like an old lady is shown dropping her purse and one of the group run over to her, and we immediately  think that he is going to grab the purse and run away with it, however he runs over to the elderly lady and picks up her purse and hands it back to her then runs off. The video implies that this stereotype does not apply to all individuals who are presented in the video in real life, the video teaches us to not judge a book by its cover as well as not to stereotype.

5. The film 'Shrek' is an excellent example of intertextuality, it shows a number of examples throughout the film. The most obvious being that a variety of other fictional characters from other 'fairy tales' are starred in the film, the likes of Pinocchio, the gingerbread man, the 3 little pigs and the wolf, and many more. These characters from other fictional books and films will help the younger audience understand as they will be able to recognise and relate to other fictional stories that they have either read or seen.  The fact that the other fictional characters are used could result in the younger audience recognising them a as a lot of younger children take a warming to a range of fictional characters meaning the film could become more enjoyable for them. Another one of the many inter textual references in the film  is when Lord Farquard is choosing what princess takes his fancy through use of the mirror on the wall, it is like blind dating almost, with lord farquard and all the princesses from other stories including Cinderella and Rapunzel. This links to pop culture and what alot of individuals take part in these days to find the person they want to spend the rest of their life with, it added humour which would appeal to the younger audience who are familiar with the princess from the other stories, but could also appeal to adult audiences with references to dating.

7. The advert promoting EE, the mobile network operator company, involves Kevin Bacon (famous actor, best known for his main role in 'Footloose,') it shows him walking down a street explaining and approving the benefits and amazing offers the the mobile network can provide for people, the fact that Kevin is approving of the usage and benefits of the network prove that if its good enough for Kevin Bacon, then it must be good, this appeals to the audience as he is someone who is very famous and it shows him taking a liking to the network as he is describing it, suggesting that people want to look into the network because someone so high up in the acting world has approved of this product. If people possess anything that Kevin Bacon either has or likes then it gives a sense of confidence, security or even something to boast about. Kevin explains how things are connected in the world and mentions some british tv shows like catchphrase and coronation street, Kevin bringing up these programmes could lead to excitement in some individuals as i suppose everyone gets excited if a popular celebrity mentions one of your favourite programmes, this could lead to other questions like 'does he watch it?' does he like it?' recognisation brings comfort and attention to the public eye.
