Media Diaries Week 5

'The Text that Changed My Life'

I had always been someone that has had a keen interest in lots of different types of music, mainly consisting of house and the rap genre, but I never really had a favorite artist or album that i would constantly listen to over and over. The first artist to change that was Eminem. I always knew of his music and occasionally listened to a song or two, but i never really kept songs on repeat or went through an entire album. The first album that changed that was the Marshall Mathers LP 2. I remember when it first came out keeping all the songs replaying and frequently doing so. His music is so clever as he finds a way to relate to so many people in different ways. He is very versatile in his music as he doesn't just have one similar tone and style in every song. He makes different types of songs some being aggressive, some sad and some laid-back. That was the thing that made me enjoy his music so much was his contrasting nature of songs he made, even onto the same album.

He often made very meaningful songs that portray that life is not 'perfect' like some other songs make out, and to me it made him feel like more of a real person. It gave that connection and realisation that he isn't just a generic rapper copying what everyone else is doing and talking about. He adopted his own way of going about things, and from this became one of the most successful rappers of all time.

Eminem inspired so many people by proving that no matter your colour, gender or background you came from you can always achieve your dreams if you work hard enough. During the time of his fame the rap genre was heavily filled with african-americans, and white rappers were almost non-existent. He broke the white/black barrier, and as a result, inspired others to fight for the things they once thought was impossible. From there on, I started listening to all of his music, and became a frequent follower of him. I felt like i could relate to some of the things he said and the way his outlook on life was. He didn't care what others thought of him and had a certain humour that i could relate too. He really helped change my perspective on things, and helped me realise that as long as you work hard towards something, and be yourself you can achieve anything.
