Media diary week 3 // Audience classification
A piece of media text I have consumed this week is a film called ‘in my dreams’. In my dreams is a romantic/drama and would appeal to an audience of a working class/ skilled working class background as it explores the idea of a single woman going about her everyday duties in your average working class life and trying to manage her money so she can get by.

The underlying message within the film that sometimes miracles can happen and take your life by surprise. The woman wishes upon a supposed magical fountain in a hope to find happiness and her true love after being work orientated for the whole of her life. This would appeal to a working class audience as it will most likely be relatable and appeals to their hierarchy of needs, love and belonging. This means they can sympathize with the character and relate to them making them a target audience. Whereas an upper middle class audience may think this is pathetic and a waste of time wishing for financial stability and a love life due to the fact their financial state will more than likely be extremely strong.

Audience profiling:
Age: 16-40
Gender: women
Education: high school// no specific level of education required
Family: a mother or possibly a single mother
Self-image: low self-esteem in need of help// guidance
Class: working class
Ethnicity: British
Location: great Britain

I believe this piece of media would also appeal to the mainstreamer due to the fact that the story line behind it is relatable to working class people and mainstreamers want to feel safe and secure and this will allow them to do so. It also follows your average romantic story line where the woman ends up getting her dream boyfriend therefore again lives up to expectations and you can pretty much predict what is going to happen.

This would appeal to groupies and traditionalists in the life style categories. It would appeal to groupies as it is a romantic film which is one of the most popular genres in film therefore would be classed as ‘normal’ to watch this specific genre. However it would also appeal to the traditionalist due to the fact it follows the same story line that every happy ending romantic film follows meaning that the piece will be no different to any other romantic film and they can for see the outcome.
