Media Diary Week 4
The media text I have chosen to discuss for this week is the film Focus. Focus isn't just any ordinary film, its an intriguing, mind blowing film that creates such a shocked feeling. The film is based around conning people and the world of stealing secretively. Although it is based around this, it has a love story to it that attracts the audience to keep watching. I would say that the target audience for this film is the explorer, as this is not a film familiar with most people. The film can seem difficult to understand as it seems unreal to be able to do the things that happen in the film. This is the key to the target audience being an explorer as the explorer loves a challenge which the film Focus provides. Also, the love story can seem confusing as the main character who is Will Smith puts a front on that he doesn't the explorer knows very well that he does deep down.
For a preferred reading of this text it would stand out to achievers that are interested in how the whole stealing without knowing situation. The acting in the film is superb, it creates such an involvement with the audience. Interaction is important to any media texts as it makes the audience want to follow where the text is going for this example, Focus has a love story and most audiences like to watch the whole film to see f there predictions are correct. Also, Focus has a uniqueness about it as throughout the film it doesn't become boring or repetitive. One of the messages created is that no matter what person you are, feelings can be created easily. Focus tells us that there is more about life than just living it, doing the most outrageous things lead to what you want in your life.
An oppositional reading for this text is the moral beliefs of somebody. Most people believe that stealing is wrong and in fact they are correct as it is a criminal offence. This may take an oppositional reading as the audience are meant to go along that what is happening in the film is right but they have different morals so they understand perfectly but reject the text. They reject the text as it is something that they are not familiar with so they find it difficult to connect with and have an involvement. In addition, the audience member may reject it as they have been taught right and wrong and do not agree with this and if the person is from the upper class they will reject this text as they are seen to not need to steal or have enquires about it.
A situation where a negotiated reading can take place is watching the film at the cinemas with your peers. There is always that one friend who cant stop talking throughout the film and always a noisy eater! This is difficult to get the idea of the film as it is hard to concentrate. Also, the person who you could be watching the film might be completely against it so it creates a negative mood so you cannot enjoy the film and then you are forced to thinking of the film as bad as of other peoples opinions.
