Northern Soul : Audience classification
Northern soul is a 2014 British historical film directed by Elaine Constantine. Set in 1974, the film tells the story of two young Lancashire teenagers, Matt and John, whose lives are changed forever by the discovery of American Soul music and the dance culture that grew up around in Britain. However the trend of taking pills and drugs in the early 70's gets the better of them and some of their friends.
This type of film i would say would appeal typically to the explorer, this is because firstly now a days, most popular and well advertised films are action or romantic comedies involving many famous actors and particularly set in modern day. Northern Soul was hardly advertised and involves actors new to the scene of film, its set in the late 60's, years ago from today's modern world. And although many other famous films were set in 60's/ 70's like 'The Help' and 'Good morning Vietnam,' this film focuses on the theme of northern soul dance which is a quite rare thing to take part in now a days and has never been showed in detail in any other modern day film, many individuals have probably never heard of it and i think this is one of the reasons an explorer would go for this type of film. I myself found this film through research and stories from older family members and proves to be a different and alternative screening " an authentic and uplifting tale of two friends " (IMDb). the way it revolves around the Northern Dance scene gives the film its authenticity and the unexpected 'jack the lad' personalities the main characters portray and romance involved provide the unexpected turns the film takes, making it a different and exciting film for explorers to discover.
i knew right from discovering the film that it would not become of interest to those of the mainstream category, this is because the movie again was not set out to be the new biggest movie of the year, that everyone talks about and has to watch, this is because the lack of advertisement and famous actors, as the main streamers go for only the films that everyone watches, for the simplicity of watching the highest rated film for conversation and security with others. Also, even if a main streamer did come across this film, they would not have any urge to watch it as the title they immediatley would question, as northern soul was only the rage back in the 60's/ 70's and is hardly talked of now a days, as the main streamer only wants to hear/ watch/ listen etc the bigger and more popular things like everyone else. ( which isnt Northern Soul dancing in the media of today.)
i cannot think of any reason why the succeeder would be interested in this film apart from the reason that they would want to become a professional Northern soul dancer. Although Northern soul is not a profession, rather just a style of dancing, if the succeeder wanted to be good at this particular type of dance they could watch the film for tips on movements and the type of music that is usually used to dance to. As the succeeder is always determined and looking for ways to improve on themselves as well as other people, getting all the help they could get to be the best at what they want to achieve is what they do.
finally the aspirer, again the only reason an aspirer individual would take interest to this film is for the simple reason of inspiration! if you were an individual and taking up the new interest or hobby of Northern Soul dance, watching the film would give insight to what the characters are wearing/ style of their hair/ the dance moves they use, inspiring the insprer, as stupid as it sounds. this could influence the interested individual to become better or more confident in there new field of dance.
