Review: The Inbetweeners

Three years after the last movie, The Inbetweeners was back. After grossing £90 million from the first movie, it was no surprise to see the four brainless, idiotic, senseless British teenagers back on the big screen. I wasn't let down by the hype and unbelievable anticipation for the first movie, it had everything. Every joke was hilarious, every scene was jam packed with humour, it was incredible. But will the second live up to the hype of the first Inbetweeners movie?

Obviously aimed at the millions of people who were already familiar with the British lads, the story picks up about a year (ish) from where the first movie ended. Simon (Joe Thomas) and Neil (Blake Harrison) set off to see Will (Simon Bird). The start was an eerie setting, creating a little bit of tension as viewers wondered what film they were actually watching, likewise with myself, I did wonder if it was still the adverts or not pre movie. They visited in dark, gloomy costumes, walking through the woods, eventually stumbling across a house, with loud house music blazing from it. It's obviously apparent that Will doesn't fit into the campus society, just like sixth form, as the 3 lads get turned away immediately, laughed and mocked by the people in the house playing a prank on them. When they return, Will's room was literally upside down. "They did a good job" was the phrase me and Joe said simultaneously. Simon had worries of his own, however, he was stuck with his obsessed, overly protective and clingy girlfriend, Lucy (Tamla Kari). Neil didn't have any problems, but then again, he is to stupid to realise if he had any anyway. Typical Neil to be honest. He opens up an email by his best friend, Jay (James Buckley) who was describing life in Australia. Blow jobs, porn models, and DJ Big Penis all made appearances, quite evident that Jay was exaggerating life down under. Life is different from the other side of the world to the 3 lads. So they take advantage of the gap year offered by universities, and visited Australia.

Without any directions, or contact/personal details given by Jay, they somehow stumble across him in a bar looking for DJ Big Penis. They find him, in the bathroom, dishing out painfully unfunny jokes to those in the toilets. One lie they found out. Will stumbles across an old friend, and after getting signals from Katie (Emily Berrington), Will eventually agrees to go exploring with her and his friends. They go to get some sleep in the mansion that Jay mentioned, however, it comes to light that he lives outside his Uncles house, in a tent. Another lie. They realise they can't live in a one man sieved tent for 13 days, so set sail for Byron Bay, where Katie is staying, the following day.

Desperately trying to impress Katie, Will stumbles across good looking, yet annoyingly over confident Ben, and it becomes more obvious that they are in a battle to win over Katie. As that happens, and when Will thinks he can "pull" Katie, he deceives to ignore his actual friends more often. Several adventurous experiences with Katie later, he wins her over after a night of drinking. They go to a random bed in the site and start to have a little bit of 'fun', which was ended by Katie's snoring and Will's rape alarm going off, something that sent false alarms to the actual owner of the bed.

Now, the funniest part of the film is the water park scene. Viewers of the movie will immediately know what I mean! After Simon realises that Jay is desperate to get back together with ex girlfriend Jane, despite Jay being adamant he doesn't like the "fatty". When he traces her to the water park, where she works, he realises she left months ago to the outback. With Jay devastated, Simon pulls some strings to find her address of Janes PO Box, giving Jay some hope. However, before they can set off, they have a final ride of a slide. With Neil's bowls in some pain, he eventually realises the beast, on the slide, while Will is going down. Panicking, Will tries to go down quicker, and get every one out the water. When he reaches the end, he wins the race he and Ben where in, he turns to see a big splurge of poo hitting his face. Brilliant from the writers, so funny to watch! Was belly aching to see it live!

After being arrested, and realising that his friends are jerks for laughing at him, he doesn't leave with them to find Jane, and stays with Katie, the end of the 3 year friendship? Well after Will realises that Ben and Katie are actually dating, and their friends are pompous jerks with absolutely nothing in common to Will, he realises he makes a massiv msiatek. He wants his boring, stupid fiends back.

Anyway, he finds them, meets up and they continue to drive along the outback. They run out of petrol, and are stranded in the middle of nowhere. They collapse due to the heat and dehydration, although Simon should have been ok as he drank Neil's urine! After 2 hours, they are saved, obviously by Jane, who was flattered by Jay coming to the Oz to find her, but didn't take him back anyway, something that I didn't expect, but on the comedy level, it was quite good as it was funny seeing Jay left hanging!

When the parents realise they had a near death experience, they come to visit them, however Will was astonished to see his ex headteacher next to his mum. Bad news for Will as they hated each other. Good news for Simon, however, as he split up with his clingy girlfriend after he cheated on her, after getting engaged (completely by accident) to her a week earlier.

Overall, I felt that the film was good, but I expected it to be better, but that was particularly due to the first 3 seasons and first movie. I felt that it didn't live up to the potential that it got, but I still found it funny as I thought the script was fantastic, the writers did a brilliant job, especially the water park scene, and the director also was decent due to some camera angle scenes and sound effects they added after the scenes were shot.

I rate this is a 7.5/10.
