Artist-  Tom Odell
song-  Another Love
Genre- Indie/pop

visual style/ mise-en-scene
the camera starts with an extreme close up on the artists face to really capture the emotion in his eyes and his blank facial expression suggesting that he is very cold and empty and full of regret. The camera starts to slowly pan out and continues this progressively getting wider and wider revealing the location that they are in. eye contact is kept with the camera at all times to make the performance very personal and make it direct to the person watching it. An unfocused blurred image is used in the mirror when his partner is there to suggest that it is all just a memory replaying in his brain which is unclear because it was from a long time ago or possibly that it is so painful its hard to recall upon. It becomes apparent that the woman is the music video is constantly out of focus suggesting that she was no longer or had never been a main focus for him. She is shouting at him at a point in the video and the sound is non diegetic to him and the audience to portray that he never listened to her and they could have  had communion issues. This could suggest a reason to why the couple have broken up.
Low lighting is used at the start and at the end of the video to portray darkness and sadness he is now in because of this memory haunting him. Normal lighting is used through the rest of the video to create a sense of naturalism and create a normal setting as they where facing normal everyday issues.
At the end of the video the shot beings to further zoom out again up to the point where the camera then Leaves the room via tracking shot and then quickly changes to an extreme close up of the artists face like the shot  at the beginning. This is done to allow the audience to clearly see his emotions and highlight his pain and suffering from this relationship and how it has caused him to break down.

Narrative:
The story that is being told through this song is the break down of a relationship and what can happen as a result of a lack of communication between a couple. They lyrics are being explored through the visuals I particular the last line of the song 'all my tears have been used up' and then their is an extreme close up of his face with his eyes red as if he was trying to cry but couldn't.  The lyrics could also suggest that he has cheated on her so she has left him and he is experiencing internal conflict because he regrets what he did to her. Her shouting and him being oblivious is the key moment to suggest that she isn't really there and is an insight into his brain and how he is overplaying this memory.

Conventional/unconventional:
Conventional :
.performance to camera
.tackles a frequent problems people face in relationships
Unconventional:
. Not a happy ending
. Lots of violence with in the video not usual for a romantic ballad

This gives it a unique edge as it conforms to some conventions however dares to be different and challenges what a love is meant to be like and creates a more intense atmosphere which makes it stand out.

What works well/what doesn't:
Works well-
.the use of extreme close ups to capture true emotion and return to it at the end to show the change in emotion.
. Keeping the video all in one area, the continuous zoom out to reveal the setting which is a key part of mise-en-scene.
what doesn't-
The possibility of audience getting boring as it is kept in one room could be considered boring
