Dear John is a film which revolves around the whole Long Distance Relationship and features typical Romance genre conventions.
The trailer starts with the two characters meeting on a sunny beach in California and then leads to the two of them getting together. The sunny beach symbolises all the good things that come with relationships and how happy they're to start with. The way the characters meet is a common factor in the Romance genre. A male doing something nice for a female is extremely common and of that particular style. This is a comparison to the middle of the trailer when John tells Savanna that he's going of to war. Whereas the start was all happy and the sunny the trailer goes bleaker and more conflict prone compared to the the happy light hearted start of the trailer. This shows how the film explores the problems of relationships and how they can be overcome.
A big theme in the trailer is how once the characters kiss everything seems to go wrong. This explores modern day problems with relationships as once there is a kiss involved, there is then feelings involved and these are what shape a relationship. This is then when the problems start. This film takes it a step further though as the relationship then becomes a long distance one which makes things harder especially because John is in the special forces and the only way they can communicate is through letters. This symbolises the iconography of the genre as it explorers more real life situations that military families endure on an every day basis.
The cast that have been chosen for this film have been chose for a reason. Channing Tatum and Amanda Seyfried are both attractive people which is essential for a romance film ad the attractiveness of them both appeals to people more than it would for two people who aren't as attractive. There're also both really well known actors. Channing Tatum in particular who is now a huge star so from a narrative and genre point of view the status of the actors is huge factor in pushing the story forward.
Dear John features a lot of unanswered questions in the trailer that are known as enigma codes. Example of this are 'Will John come out of the forces','will they end up together' or 'What happens to Johns dad.' All of these unanswered questions fuels the audiences curiosity and appeals as a compelling story because audiences just have to know things and the unknown is frustrating. The film features action codes which help push the story forward. these are scenes like John jumping into the sea for Savanna's bag and John going back into the army. These contribute to keeping the story interesting because if it didn't have these the film would end after 10 minutes as there would be no story to tell.
