song/ artist:- the city by the 1975
visiual style/ mise-en-scene:-
the camera shots are mostly static in the video, capturing the whole of the scene, some shots include the camera slowly moving from one angle to another, mostly in the shots where pictures/ videos are projected onto matty's body, reflecting on the chorus "if you wanna find love then you know where the city is." the whole video is in black an white, making the light part of the shots more exposed and the darkness casting shadows, creating more atmospheric and abstract. the shots where the camera is gradually moved angle to angle, gives a more wholesome and detailed display of what is happening in that particular shot and helps us recognise how things have been placed, and what the effect of them being there is on the video and response to the audience, for example when the shot of the lady undressing while smoking is showed, the camera angle used displays the smoke travelling upwards and it is more exposed because of the black and white, giving a sort of reckless yet relaxing tone to the video.
narrative/ including techniques used:-
the video follows no particular story or pathways in relation to the song, but insead however matches action and individual characters to match the beat of the song or any relevant lyrics. for example the shots of the men fighting, the couple kissing, and lead sing matty throwing his hair about in slow motion, all match and reflect to the punch drumline that is looped throughout the entire song, the aggressiveness matches with the men fighting and the passion matches with the couple kissing. the shots where matty is shown throwing himself about and headbanging reinstates the urge to display movements that reflect the drumline, like headbanging, but more exaggerated to capture the movement of his hair and necklace.
this is why i think this video is unique because of the way the song is not over exaggerated by the video, the video simply shows the contrasting and reflects the musical and instrumental impacts, the atmospheric and exposed tone created by the black and white effect gives every action and movement in the video detail and definition, which is why i think its different to a lot of other music videos.
