artist/ song: - the fratellis ~ chelsea dagger
visual style/ mise-en-scene:-
the camera in this music video is used easily but effectively, most of the shots are static/ the camera is kept still throughout the shot, this gives a clear and more wholesome view, these are mostly used in the spotlight shots are used, where the members of the band and a hand full of burlesque dancers mime and pose at the camera, the spotlight being effectively used in a close up shot to give abstract and striking visual effects. The only times when the camera is moving during a shot, when a group of the burlesque dancers perform the iconic 'can-can' dance in a line, the camera follows along from the first dancer progressing and travelling down the row, the iconography creates classic and 'showbiz' feels as its something we can recognise and understand what era the burlesque fashion comes from.
Narrative/ including techniques used:-
the song is behind lead sing Jon Fratelli's wife Heather, who was a burlesque dancer, and who's stage name was Chelsea Dagger, the song introduces how they first met, and hence the video is full of burlesque dancers, in lace and fluffy lingerie with pearl necklaces and heels with stockings. the girls in the video perfectly portray the iconic classic burlesque dancer with wavey pinned hair and cigarette holder, which was a huge fashion accessory back in the late 40's and early 50's. The lyrics and meaning behind the song reflects in the visuals and narrative of the videos, it evolves around the burlesque dancer which is what the song is based on.
this song is unique because it is personal reference to the lead singer Jon, and although many songs involve personal reference this video gives us insight to the experience in contrast with the song, the song is based on his encounter with his wife and is reflected in the video by expressing her with the various burlesque models and dancers. the use of the still shots during the modelling scenes and spotlight scenes are used well, these create the iconic and glamorous style of the burlesque dancers, there poses and sensual moves reflects to the lyrics and the whole fluency and beat of the song, for example the beat of the chourus "da-da-da da-da-da" goes in time with the shot of the dancers peforming the can-can.
