Music Video research | Soul

Artist : Whitney Houston
Song: I Wanna Dance With Somebody

Visual Style/Mise en scene
The video begins by using slow motion which indicates drama or a build up. The video starts black and white which creates a contrast between the rest of the video were the music is upbeat and the colours are very bright. The slow motion section at the start builds up to the upbeat rest of the video. As the song has has the word "dance" in its title it signifies that it is most likely going to have dancing in the video they emphasise the dancing by using medium/ medium long shots when they are dancing. When she is signing the camera tends to use tracking shots making the shot a close up. This is shown when she is singing the chorus of the song.

Narrative Including techniques used
I would say that the main aim of this song is to uplift and energise the audiences mood whoever is watching. The bold, optimistic video makes it hard for the watchers not to get up and dance. However, the song connotes loneliness whe she uses personification when saying "when the night falls my lonely heart calls",which shows she wants love and companionship. It shows Whitney dancing with a lot of men at a few points in the video this could mean that she has not found the man she wants to dance with or love essentially.

Conventional/Unconventional
I would say that some ways the video is conventional as it has that typical routine and structure like other music videos. This video was released in the late 80s which was known about this type of structure. I would say it was unconventional because people watching this now in 2016 are not quite familiar with older music so the structure and layout of this music video may seem quite different to them.

What works/What doesn't?
The aspects that work in the video is the upbeat song I feel like when people listen to the song they automatically feel better and in a better mood. I also enjoy how all the colours compliment each other  which makes the imagery of the video aesthetically pleasing. An improvement that could be make to this video is the camera quality however, it us understandable because back then HD everything was not a thing.
