One Last Time - Ariana Grande (Music Video Research 8)

Artist: Ariana Grande.
Track: One Last Time.
Genre: Dance/Pop.

Visual Style/ Mise-en-scene:
Whats interesting about this music video is the fact that it filmed in one shot and filmed by one of the actors in the video. Because it is filmed by one of the actors, the camera is shaky however, because this is intentional, it adds effect to the video. The pace of the music video is the same as the pace of the track and lyrics. Also, the video contains special effects such as meteors falling from the sky and strange colours in the sky.

Narrative:
The video begins with clips of news reports about a comet that is falling to earth and will end with catastrophic results. The two actors, who are the well-known singer herself and her ex-costar Matt Bennet, get out of the car to explore what is happening. Whilst doing this they encounter barriers and complications such as police warning them off and people getting aggressive towards them. They even walk past an ambulance with an injured person which shows us the effects of the comet. Despite this, there is a narrative resolution which is shown with the kiss between the two actors. Although, we see a narrative resolution, the video ends with the comet falling to earth which leaves us wondering what happened next.

Conventional/Unconventional:
What is conventional about this music video is that it is filmed in one shot and includes special effects. These are two things that are rarely included in music videos therefore they make this video unique. Also, the idea that this is filmed by one of the actors makes this video unique as it creates a jolted and shaky video. This makes the video seem very personal and creates a unique effect for the audience.

What works/What doesn't:
The special effects and news headlines included in this music video worked really well because they created a unique effect and kept the audience interested in the video. As well as this the fact that it is all one shot works really well as it is easy to follow yet it is still interesting. Also, what works in this video is the fact that it leaves the audience wondering what happened at the end. This worked as it left the audience wanting more and made the video very memorable.
