A media text that changed my life is the video game Alien Isolation. Winner of 2014's game of the year award Alien Isolation delivers a chilling story based around Amanda Ripley, daughter of Ellen Ripley portrayed by Oscar nominated actress Sigourney Weaver on the big screen. A combination of action/ survival horror Alien Isolation can be thrilling yet terrifying at the same time.
I first experienced this text on Christmas day 2014. My love for Red Barrels critically acclaimed horror survival game Outlast fuelled my desire to consume Alien Isolation however what I got was something that was very special to play and something which I love very much.
This text changed my life for a number of reasons. As someone who is a seasoned gamer Alien Isolation delivered a challenge that on some stages id never really had before and really tested me as a gamer but also on a mental level due to the horror aspect. With the constant threat of the Alien along with many other threats such as the Synths, Facehuggers and even Humans Alien Isolation is out to ruin you day from the very outset. The wide range of threats leave you on the edge of your seat as you know that at any one moment you could be under threat.
Alien Isolation can challenge you mentally as well. Many of the levels require you to solve puzzles which is a lot easier said than done. The constant threat of the Alien leads you to want to rush the puzzles which can result in you getting them wrong. This is the paranoia of knowing that you could die at any given moment.
The design of the Alien is a complete replica of the one from the original movie from the ground up. It even behaves like the one from the original movie and because of this its a problem for the player. The Alien is unpredictable and doesn't have a pattern that the player can work out. This for me was a problem as every time I died was due to a jump scare that I wasn't expecting and resulted in me crying and turning the game off. The paranoia of the game resulted in me googling how long the level I was about to be playing would take because it was basically mental torture for me to endure for a lengthy amount of time therefore I had to mentally prepare and get myself syced up to play the game which is something I've never really experienced before with gaming.. I can vividly remember a mission on the game taking me between 2-3 hours and upon completing it giving the biggest sigh of relief and being too scared to go to bed in fear of the Alien coming for me.
This game is undoubtedly one of the best games I've ever played and I know this because of what I had to go through to complete it. This was no normal gaming experience for me and because of this I very much hope they produce a sequel to Alien Isolation
