First Date by Blink 182

The first element that strikes you with this video is the immediate sense, for many, of reminiscence through using a 70's style setting and characters. This is relatively unconventional as this video was released in the early 2000's, so to set the video almost 30 years prior is truly quite quirky and unusual. However, this element also provides an element of humor to the video, due to the cheesy outfits and hairstyles used on the band. As they are usually dressed in dark clothing, seeing them dressed in shorts, too-tight gym shirts and mullets provides a sense of humorous unfamiliarity.

The narrative is quite typical and conventional. It follows the generic plot line of boy-sees-girl and makes it his goal to 'win her over'. However, this is done with such cheesy idiocy from the characters from their falling and immature behaviour that you cannot help but enjoy their characters personality.
Furthermore, the song lyrics have some relevancy to the narrative, as the song expresses the true nerves, and honest outcomes of first dates which is then shown through clumsy behaviour in the video. Their song lyrics and video do not conform to the ideologies set by society of dating.

As for visual codes, the camera follows their actions and tracks their movements. I believe that this helps to give the video a sense of authenticity that is reinforced by the 70's setting. This also is effective in capturing the funny moments of the characters embarrassing themselves so creates a focus on their 'joker' attitudes, allowing the audience to know that the video is not at all serious and to take the video as a joke
.
Finally, there are many in intertextual references in the video that further create humour and I believe that these would be very effective in another music video. There are references to the typical boyband image, which is both an intertextual reference of those bands, but also the bands 'All the Small Things' music video. Also, references to Elvis Presley, a very significant idol of that time period, which again authenticates the setting.
