Pride also appeals to the mainstream audience due to is conventional ways of storytelling and narrative techniques, the film works as a chain of cause and effect, one things leads to another and it goes around and around. This is extremely conventional because in a way the audience can predict what will happen next, sometimes they are right and other times they are wrong. For example when Carl walks over to Mark we believe that he could potentially shout or even hit him as we as an audience believe the miners will not accept the gay community, however Carl extends his hand to shake and offers Mark a pint. This scene shows how audience expectations are broken as we are lead to believe one thing and the opposite happens.
This film also attract the audience as not only does it entertain us through its comedic elements but it also gives the audience information of that time and what happened during the miners strike and how LGSM helped them through their struggle. The film entertains us as the character of Joe is completely fictional which meant that there was a character that wasn’t real but he was still identifiable, in addition to this the fact that the character of Joe is a blank slate means that the audience can project their characteristics and views onto him which means they can identify with Joes and essentially be apart of that world as the film goes on.
One of the biggest ways that the film attracted an audience was the fact that it was based on a true story as it meant that all of the themes and issues of the film were real and that most of the film was real. This meant that the audience could see the reality of that time and what happened during the strike.
Overall this film attracts the target audience of the explorer through its alternative nature but also attracts the mainstream as it is conventional to the genre and through the narrative structure.
