Empire magazine works well with its online presence. The
magazine was published in 1989 so with time has moves to social media as well
as digital copies of the magazine showing that although it has its established
audience it has moves and evolved with time to reach other audience members and
a younger audience group through social media sights such as Facebook and
Twitter.
When you are about to leave Empire magazines official website
there is a pop up telling you that you can purchase three issues of the
magazine for £5 which is a huge offer as one magazine costs £4.50 alone. This
serves as a USP and also makes the viewer stay online for longer. It also
encourages them to buy the magazine as they must be interested in the content
of the magazine so therefore are more than likely going to purchase the
magazines. The official page also has pop ups that encourage the viewer to
subscribe or take part in competitions for first screening of films. There is
also a tab for the online shop where the audience can purchase the magazine as
well as merchandise from films and TV programmes. In addition to this their
official web page has a link to all their social media sights, one of these
sights is Twitter which has 530k followers, Empire only ever promote themselves
on their twitter feed retweeting the same articles so that no body misses out
and also only post their own content so that the viewer is never taken away
from their page. However, there is much more interaction on the Empire Facebook
page, as there are many comments and conversations below articles of the
magazine which allows the audience to interact with not only the magazine but
also with other fans of the magazine which is an appeal in itself as many
people will like that they can talk to people that are interested in the same
types of films and share the same views. In addition the Facebook page offers
exclusive content such as never before seen images, footage and info which is
also an appeal as the audience will want to know all the latest updates so this
is the perfect place to go for the first look at everything before the magazine
comes out.
In addition Empire have produced a digital copy of their
magazine for android and iPad. Once again through the digital version the
viewer can instantly connect to Empires social media accounts. This shows that
the magazine has moved on with time and is expanding its business to reach a
wider target audience. The digital copies also have AV material embedded within
them so that the audience can go to the Empire playlist and podcasts as well as
look at new trailers for films. Another bonus is that there is pop up material
for the viewer so they get extra information than what is provided by the print
magazine.
Overall Empire magazine and its online presence work
together as the online sights would not exist without the magazine but also the
online enhances the notoriety of the magazine as it has allowed the magazine to
adapt and expand to larger audience types.
