Question:Success and Responses
Essay: When making the choice on whether or not a film has been a successful hit. There are certain categories that need to be taken into account. Theses categories are the awards the film has won, positive reviews from high end critics that show the preferred reading has been met and also the cultural impact the film has on the public. The budget of Pride was £8 million , however, only made 7.5 worldwide which means in terms of Box Office numbers and sales this film was not as successful. Although it was not successful at the box office, the film did win a handful of awards. For example, a BAFTA for Outstanding Debut by British writer, director or producer, also an LGBTQ Film of the year. With Best British Independent film accompanying it. The film in total made 2.2 million DVD sales. The critics on top film websites such as Rotten Tomatoes and IMBD gave ratings of 92% and 7.9 average .Pride was nominated for a golden globe for the category of Best Film, Musical or Comedy. In order for a film to receive a good review, it must show the signs of accepting the preferred reading to the film. A bad review will not accept this rewarding. An example of the preferred reading being met would be a review from Michael Ordona, SF Gate. The whole review is positive towards the film. For example, he comments 'Its called Pride for obvious reason, but could have easily been called 'empathy'. 'The film viscerally conveys the desperation of the struggle to survive.' From these comments it is clear to see that the preferred reading of the film , which is that the two groups that the film focusses on have receive sympathy and empathy from its spectators and has been able to portray the struggles of these two groups of people, has certainly been met. Ben Walters sight and sound does not gather the preferred reading. 'small amounts of homophobia. This shows that the cultural impact that Matthew Vaughn wanted this film to have has not had the desired affect that he had hoped for. However, this is only a percentage of the audience that watched Pride.
