UK reality tv shows mostly run in series instead of a continually broadcast because shows like the X factor takes plenty of time to prepare for. Things such as auditions, stages, editing etc. It will take them a while for them to edit the good bits, bad bits and the funny bits into the tv show otherwise the audience would just be bored of seeing hundreds of thousands auditions throughout the year. An aspect of The-X-Factor I’ve never been particularly fond of is the sob stories many contestants bring with them. Although they are now considered a big part of TV talent shows, they often influence the judging panel’s views on acts, putting through people who may not be particularly talented because they feel sympathy for them. Having said that, the current series seems to have featured significantly less sob stories than previous years, This kind of genre usually air at early peak time (17:30 to 20:00) then the show is followed by a spin off show called Xtra factor at 20:15 because this is the time where families gather around to have food then watch tv therefore this is the time to attract audiences into the show. The format for these reality tv show is quite simple, throughout the series, there will be quite a few sad stories from the contestants that makes the judge feel sorry for them while giving them a yes. However throughout the episodes, there will be good auditions, bad auditions and funny auditions to keep the audience stay and watch the show.
The reason why the audiences watches these tv shows can be different. Firstly, I believe that most audience use the reality tv shows for entertainment/escapism due to the fact that there are many funny and embarrassing scenes throughout the series and people might find it funny to watch these embarrassing moments. The audience also use the show for social interaction to keep them talking to their friends, families and colleagues about the show to keep the audience socialized but also it is free promotion for them. The audience might also watch X-Factor for the celebrities that are in the show. For example, Simon Cowell has created the show and he has been a judge on the show for a very long time, the audience might find him entertaining therefore follow him on the show. The target audience for X-Factor mostly contains female that is between the age 16 to 44 meaning that a majority of them will be housewives. This show is mainly targeted at mainstreamers because the broadcast time and day is always on a Saturday and Sunday during the peak times and the format of the series are the same every single time which means that there is a familiarity in this tv show that keeps the audience to watch this show every year.
The opening sequence for the x factor is short and no forms of judges appeared in the sequence, it was just the iconic 'X' logo that they’ve used for the past 13 years. The music also creates a familiarity for the audience due to the fact that they might have heard it from somewhere else e.g. advertisement on TV, Phone and internet.
The setting of the x factor is different every time we see the show because they change locations across the country when they're filming however, it's always inside a building however other reality shows like the voice is set in a stage and other tv shows followed by studio and room.
