Jeremy Corbyn: The one man moral Panic. An investigation into representation and the use of stereotyping in the print media on the run up to the 2017 General Election.

"The term moral panic has been widely adopted both by the mass media and in everyday usage to refer to the exaggerated social reaction caused by the activities of particular groups and/or individuals."1 "Moral panics take place when the media turn a fairly ordinary event and turn it as extraordinary."2

Both Cohen and Marsh say that moral panics are created by the media, and usually when they overreact to something so ordinary. And they have a point, modern moral panics are created by the mass media, in response to the actions of a particular group. Followers of the religion group Islam have been unfairly created into a moral panic, and most terrorist attacks nowadays can be associated with Muslims. The mass media have forced their belief that Muslims are a danger to society, saying that "1 in 5 Brit Muslims sympathy for Jihadi's".3 This clearly isnt true, but they have used this to put the fear into British people's minds, they want Muslims to be feared and panicked
Thomspon argued that the media target "People who are alarmed by an apparent fragmentation or breakdown of the social order, which leaves them at risk in some way."4
